Vibe free ride?

Well you could read into that title what you will, but here's the issue...

After about an hour riding the Cagiva (600 single) my right fingers go numb. Using chainsaws and weed eaters, etc. also cause the same problem. Left hand is fine, that has been operated on (carpel tunnel syndrome). The bike does have fairly hefty bar weights.

Rather than fixing me, I'd like your opinions as to what bike might consider as an alternative (a few more horses would be nice too). Something that is very smooth. I'm really only a weekend rider with the occasional foray into rush hour traffic, so, more tour than sport. And of course the budget - less is better but under $5k if possible.

Today I very nearly bought a '82 vf750s. Even though it had just been tuned, when I got there it wouldn't start... then I noticed the crack in the frame. :shit: OK, I'll give that one a miss.

You really do need to ride a few bikes to see which ones give you the least lower arm pressure.

I have not ever had such problems however I have raised bars on bikes as a way of relieving pressure and I don't ever ride for more than two hours continuously.

IME: The bigger bikes are more relaxing and put less pressure on your lower arm. Before I bought the Tiger I was 95% set on a BMW as I really did like the relaxed upright riding position.

Yeah, pressure can certainly affect things but I think in my case it's the vibration, hence the chainsaw etc.

What I’d like to know is; which (touring/sport) bikes have the least vibes at the bars, or are all multi’s smooth as?

I guess this is the reason that rubber mounts were made.
The right aftermarket rubber mounts for your bike can remove that vibration.

I guess thats why Harleys have rubber mounted bars as well

Thought about that. Went to WMC, they said they didn't have anything or it couldn't be done. I haven't given up on that idea yet. Could a 5 to 10mm rubber layer be put under the bar pedestals?

Try a set of alloy bars - these can help swallow up high frequency vibes - unsure what they do on a thumper. A fat bar would be spunky :sunny:

For dealing to the vibes in the existing bars you'd go for;

- Bar snakes. (or the kiwi DIY version)

- Grip Puppies. (I have some of these if you're interested PM me. I use them on my singles and twins for the reason you mentioned.)

- Some try increasing the size of the bar end weight.

The numbness in the hand can also be the gloves. Either too tight on the fingers or the length of the fingers being a bit too short.

As for weight on the bars someone referred to above. The handle bars are for turning the bike. Some riders lean on them. If you're doing that then have a quick practise in the garage but you should be able to have you hands just touching the bars and the load is taken through the mid body and legs. Anything else potentially causes all sorts of problems including elbows and shoulders.

However you might want to look into buying a throttle rocker, or maybe even install gel grips on your ride to help your hands?
