hey guys....

When going from 1st to 2nd, at what RPM do you change? I am finding the gearbox feels different than changing to any other gear... It quite a solid 'clunk' into 2nd, sometimes like a 'doulbe clunk'... am I changing correctly?

Also another 1st to 2nd question, Sometime I launch from say traffic lights, get halfway across the road and go into second and end up in Neutral instead... any tips for stopping this?

This has been asked many many times.
The last thread might still be going actually.

Just ride the bike mate. It will smoothen out as you get more experience and confident with your riding.
Thats the best way to fix your issue. Ride, ride and ride some more.

What Sparky said dude :)

Quite often a clunk can be not pulling the clutch fully in on the 250's, or not pulling enough revs on depending on the box. Each gear box is different, Getting "N" in between 1st and 2nd can be a result of a lazy foot, still to hard on the gas "gear locking" or the wrong grade oil in the engine. (If your bike is serviced regularly you can almost rule that out), just keep riding :)

Oh and if yours is a Hyosung.. I had that problem on mine too :) The gear change just requires a bit more enthusiasm hehe

Perhaps maybe, It is a hard thing to really judge even consciously thinking about clutch and throttle operation. It does come naturally over time.

Have you had your bike serviced ? (Just to check the clutch play)

I have ridden some crap dirt bikes in the past (not my bikes!) and found clutch setting and adjustment to be out on all of them.

Rule of thumb is to have the play, measured at the leaver to have a slack of about 4mm. This allows for expansion of the clutch plates. on that note.. do you notice that the gears clunk more when the engine is hot ? or cold ?

Could be a number of things really.
Hard to narrow them down without actually seeing you ride. Just be smooth with EVERYTHING.
Pulling in the lever, letting the lever out, letting the throttle off, twisting the throttle.
Its all about getting the timing right. Everyone has their own style on their own bikes. You just need to find yours. :Punk:

Firstly 1st - 2nd includes neutral.........thats why it feels different, it always will.
Secondly you may need to be a bit firmer in your changing, you'd be lucky to find someones thats never hit neutral by mistake...........usually followed by a horrible embarrising feeling of "did anyone notice?":shit:

Another thing to consider though is the position of your gear lever, it could be as simple as being a tad high, making it an unnatural angle for your ankle.

Setting up the position of all your levers is very important. Makes riding even easier.

I find the higher the revs the more "umphh" is required to get into 2nd.

I like to change out of first when the revs are quite high. It's more fun. Ditto with second.

A solid clunk can be quite normal with some bikes. I wouldn't worry about that.

Just make a mental note when changing from first to second to give it more of a push.

Not having a rev counter I'm not 100% sure what the RPM is when I change into second.

However, careful observation and listening has enabled me to deduce that my bike tops out at about 45 revolutions per minute so I probably change at 30


or thereabouts

Adjust your gear lever down just a few mm to help with missed 1-2 changes. Change up at a higher revs (combined with more throttle) if you want more power.

You might also wanna check the amount of play in your clutch... If there's too much play then you may not be pulling the clutch in far enough which would make things clunky. Could check your oil level/quality too.

Other than that, what everyone else said.

plus 5 .Its common to buy your bike from someone a different size than yourself hence different angles.dont drop its so low that you cant get your foot under when leaned over though.

I never have that problem, I have had 3 false neutrals in 3 and a half years with my honduh and they were all lazy foot induced :mellow:

Good advice and there is also the point that the gearing gap between first and second is usually pretty big compared with other gears.

As for revs to change at , any revs that will allow it to pull the next gear.. going slowly home with the fish'n'chips change low.... chasing down your mate on a sunday ride.. redline :shit: Its all got to be good.

Just ride, enjoy, put smile on dial and they will get smoother, faster and quieter!!!

One other thing: make sure your chain is in good condition (clean, lubed, and not worn out) and that it's properly adjusted.

I used to slip into neutral a bit as I was getting used to the change up. It still happens occasionally (due to lazy foot! - actually often when my foot's not quite in its normal place and it slips as I shift).

If it happens now I catch it really fast because it revs high when I start to let the clutch out, so it's no problem. When I was starting out, it was quite annoying because I had to think about what had happened and what to do and how to fix it, and it would slow me down a bit! (The first time I ever did it I was going up a hill for the first time and I ended up stalling and fell over!)

Just ride ride ride as someone else said!

Oh yeah and as for revs, I changed on low to medium revs when I was riding my engine in, and kept quite low when I was still timid, but now it's more fun to rev it high and quickly :Punk:

when was the oil last changed? my cbr 600 clunks just going in to ferst. but if the oil is good then ride it like you stoll it and you ll get the hang of it
