Ladies are in race 2 this year so you will get the fresh long track to ride on- doesn't get better than that.

Highly contemplating, although I am kinda nervous of my abilities... I'll be fine as long as there are no steep downhills, if there are then me and my bike may just have to cartwheel down them... :gob:

Last year there were no downhills as far as I know. It was like an easy blue at Woodhill. I didn't do it last year as I'd only been riding a short time. I'm gonna give it a shot this year. So Buffstar's keen and me and Racy Tracy. I know another girl doing it, Anita, she did it last year! Should be fun, i'm s....... myself already!!!

I haven't had a real proper ride in weeks cause of my bike being moody, so I'm feeling really out of practice for this, just really really hope we can get it and the car sorted this weekend. Maybe maybe if I'm lucky get in some time at the sandpit on Sunday. I'm excited about getting to race with you girls! Hope I make it out on two wheels unassisted this time!

Hope you can make it! I haven't ridden in ages either, probably once in the last 2 months... Trying to squeeze a practice ride in this weekend if I can find transport/time/somebody to ride with...

Okay can someone please advise me on the most cost effective way to enter this race for 2 kids? At the moment it is going to cost me $100 entrance for the day!!
I've looked at the website but wanna hear from people who have been down this track before.
eg: Do I pay for a WMC family membership, FAMILY @$35.00, but what does this mean for me? Are there any benefits in joining this club? Do I have to still pay $35 for each child as well as 2x 1 day MNZ licence?
HOW DO I START RACING?
1. The easy way- turn up on a 'Club Race Day' with a bike and suitable riding gear, join the Club ($20.00), take out a one event licence ($15.00), pay your event entry fee, ensure your bike is well muffled and safe, and that's all it takes- you can take out up to 4 day licenses per year and if you decide to go for the full licence present 2 day licence forms to MNZ and receive a $30.00 rebate.
2. Fill in the club membership form below and send into us (with your cheque and self addressed envelope), then we will send your membership card back along with the MNZ race licence application form which you then send into MNZ with your cheque ($75.00 members club only or $125.00 Full Competition). This is what we prefer as it saves paperwork on race day.

That makes for an expensive weekend!!! What does this licence do? Make you ride faster?
Actually was chatting to KTMBOY on Sunday and he really feels that we should do it for the experience...but is also more technical and much harder than the Woodhill 2Man course!

Nah, don't know what the cause is yet. I hope it doesn't!! If we finish fixing the car on sat we might go to the sandpit on sunday and I will try and replicate the problem somewhere nearish the carpark. Hopefully it doesn't happen at all, and if it does, we can figure out why! Personally I'd rather go for a nice good blat but oh well these things must be done.

Evan the license is the MNZ licence which is a yearly licence from 1 July to 30 Jun. Heaps of events require one of these. I think its pretty much like an "insurance" for th club. Not sure what an adults license costs or even older kids but for Brooklyn he gets Mini Full (means he aint just restricted to the 1 club he's a member of) it costs $95 for the year.
For Dead Toad you can buy a day licence at $15. You are only allowed i think 4 of these in a year but you can cash 2 of them against a year license.
If you get the WMMC membership it just means at some their events you do you will get at a cheaper rate. Going by their flyer regardless of whether a member or not its still $35 entry fee per kid.
So yes once licenses are involved it gets more expensive.

LOL noooo don't ask!!! Tawny did one lap and thought that was enough!!! So sat in the pits..meanwhile I was wondering where she was as I was out there taking pix. Thankfully Indy represented me well and finished the race...albiet last! haha but after looking at the video footage on his head there are some minty moments! He did very well and I am proud of him!
The track was fast and hardly had any roots. I wished the 2man was like this. Indy prefers tight and felt a wee bit disadvantaged by the MX riders.

Yeah but what I didn't realise, as I found out by someone I know who chaperoned his daughter around, is I coulda brought my bike and followed her around. If I had she would have definitely finished the race as it wasn't a difficult track, it was just the moment that got to her.

Yeah about the physicality side of it. Indy said he has never experienced the total dehydration he felt. He's never tasted gummy salt in his mouth like he did today. And he is a middle distance runner! He runs 4 minute KM's! He was absolutely buggered at the end of it!

Thanks oldskool for the photos. Yeah it was quite a day. First race ever in my life, think I've left my run too late! Had to start with hands on head, bikes off! Oh my god! I had a dream I'd not start my bike, which came true! Started 3rd to last out of 26, I think! That was the worst moment! Ended up 10th out of 17 riders, thought I was last home! Got lost on the first 2 laps, learnt a big lesson, follow the arrows, not the other riders. Yeah I'll do the 2 man, maybe I'll sleep the night before and not stress so much!

What a great ride!
As many times as you can in hour and half around a 22km loop.
The track was tight, in and out of the trees with a couple of downhills. As the day went on the tree roots became more exposed making them nice and slippery, plenty of tree stumps to navigate around too.
Rain made little difference to the track as it was nice and sheltered by the Pine trees so nice sandy track.
With only over 20 ladies entred you found yourself riding alone until you caught up or got caught by someone, so plenty of time to focus on misisng those tree stumps and branches.
Ladies experts got in 5 laps, novice 4. I found myself coming home in 11th place while my sister-in-law won the novice class, woop, woop

Twas an awsome day indeed, query there only being 20 riders tho......? My understanding was that there were 29? Bah, who cares, was great fun. Thought the organizers did a great job,
Bummer for the poor chicky who snapped her leg on the first lap......:doctor:
My only gripe would be the starting with ya hands on ya head, my bike is a fu**er to start, and I was one of the three drongos still there kicking while the rest of the pack entered the forrest.........quite sure some of the spectators would have heard my colourful language........... Heres hoping the kids who learnt some new words dont pull them out at school anytime soon...... ahhh fuck it aye :spanking:
I will definately be back there next year, and plan on being much more aggressive - I was trying to channel my innner mongral, but it was harder to keep it aggressive once the true fatigue set in, twill be better next year too as I will be a non smoker by then (set date and all - watch the posts get bitchier) and thereby fitter.:2guns:
Definately hope to see more KB girlz next year - is a totally different buzz to racing in amongst the boys - much more civalized

24 riders up from 18 last year- not bad
Ms Sheely is fine, no broken bones just a sore neck, she was out spectating yesterday.
The winner (Natasha Cairns) was racing against the men yesterday (finishing 51st outright and 3rd in class)- that's tough.

GOOD ON ALL WHO WERE IN IT TO WIN IT:first: :second: :third:
Geez I was one of those drongos! Thanks mate!!! Yeah great day. I'm with Buffstar on the start! I guess I'll just have to get the starting under control! Watching the 2 man, they had a staggered start, engines on. I'm more looking forward to that kind of start for sure!

The dead engine start is for safety reasons, it's about the only way to avoid everybody getting to the first corner at the same time and the chaos that that causes. Straight dead engine used to be the the way with hands on your bars but then electric start four strokes turned up and gave the thumper riders a huge advantage and hands on heads is about the only realistic way to even things up. If it makes you feel any better about it,I did a rodney 2 hour at Mangawhai years ago where they started us lying on the gound twenty meters behind our bikes. That made a fun start to the day.

Haha, yes I remember a hare and hound way up in Okaihau in the 70's. The buggers made us run up a freakin hill for 50metres in the mud just to get to our bikes. Try kicking over a TT500 when you're fucked already.
Oh dear off topic. Sorry ladies.:spanking:

haha a green tree warrior. as long as the frogs aren't lurking in the bush.
He bailed 11 times. The best was an over the bars job ending with a face plant. Pity that one wasn't recorded.
When I got the bike it was geared 14:48. I changed the front to 13. Am thinking maybe the back needs to go to 50 or 51. To make it 13:50. Dunno.
It's mostly used at the sandpit and he struggles to make it up the superbowl as it currently is.

How do you hang on when you're hitting a tree? I'm surprized he even got up.
His technique will come with time. The bike seems very, lets say, harsh.
He will get there though as we all do.

RM80 is 13:48 and a RM85 BW is 13:47 from memory. Yours should be OK. Must have been the body mass of the sweep rider.

When Rach got it, it had the 13 front & 48 rear. It was very harsh with the 13 - we all hated it like that. I realise though everyone rides different & prefers different gearing.
Won't going back to the 14 in front be same as changing rear to 50?

im surprised the lever is still in one piece. let alone his hand bones...
and yea, i noticed it was very kind of on or off
i suppose the upside of riding a bike geared too high is you learn demon clutch skills

Could be wrong but thought RM80 was 14:48 which was what John changed it too. Maybe he just changed it from the 13 to tame it - he aint here to check with

If they're happy with it as it is then leave it as is. When you mentioned about possibly changing the rear sprocket i thawt they still weren't happy with the gearing.

Oh I thought he saw the downhill and panicked. Yeah not much you can do for hitting trees. I am quite good at it though.
Riding in the dark and falling in ruts and then spraining wrists, not that's something I don't want to do again.
I wonder if a flywheel weight would help that bike much?

 I think the bike is fine. It's a fun machine to ride. I enjoy riding it. Considering he's only been riding since probably last November(ish) and he's only ridden it about 4 times I think he's doing fine. His last bike was an XR100 and he way way much much way more prefers his "new", superior, light and quick RM80 over the hundy. :Punk::done:

just till him on the first loop to ride with a little caution, he can pickup the pace on the following laps, more likely to nummer yourself on the first lap.

Wow- I rode behind him for a fair bit of the first lap( thats me walking his bike down the hill & des riding his bike up a hill (poor bike))- 10 points for guts and not showimg any sign of the bottom lip- the technique will come with seat time.
He needs handguards- I'm surprised his fingers survived the first crash.

Hey Andy.
I had a chat with Indy and he is keen as. Hopefully we'll get there earlier so we don't have a repeat of last time hey!
Am I reading this right? Round 2 at Rimmers Rd? ain't that the Sandpit?
Headcam is the GoPro Wide. Don't get the Standard. For the extra few more bucks for the Wide it's well worth it.
The gopro's are waterproof to 100ft and have a shockproof outercasing. The shock proofing is proven!!!

next year suggest to the organisers that since your bike is a bitch to start that you should be allowed to have it running. They might let you if you offer to start 50m meters behind the rest of the feild and facing the other way :shifty:

Dead last drongo here. thought I might be in neutral before the start, but wasn't convinced. I wasn't. The way the kdx was being a bitch to start, I thought I might have to try finding neutral (first kick gave it away, so clutch in), but then she fired on up.
Naturally, I was taking the racing very seriously. Last year someone dumped her bike early on, so I stopped to help her pick it up. This time someone was lying on the ground, and as I was dead last, very serious about the racing, knew where I was, I thought TJ might want me to head back as well to get the St Johns folk.
I thoroughly enjoyed the ride, figured out just because 3-4 folk were lost and I'd come across them, it didn't mean I was the one lost. I doubled back on myself to figure out it had been them lost and I hadn't cut the trail. (It was safe as an open area and could easily see anyone coming).
Lap 2, I did get lost, along with Lulu and others and had a more dodgy ride back to where we'd got lost. Still not sure what happened, as I'd pulled over to let faster riders past (not sure they were after all that, but hey, no matter). Found where we'd gone wrong, plodded on, then went wide on a corner to let Lulu past (she then followed me, not realising I'd gone wide on purpose). I then stalled going through a toi-toi bush and Lulu went past.
I was thrilled they let me go for a 4th lap, even though I shouldn't have been able to due to me being over 1.5 hours, but from what I got told, it was stopped when Natasha came in again and the 1.5 hour limit wasn't enforced for us slower riders. I'd not seen the time for my first lap, but had seen the 2nd and thought the 1st would've been similar, so was bummed at the thought I'd only get 3 pathetic laps in.
I couldn't believe on lap 3 when I grabbed a handful of front brake in soft sand and went down. What was further beyond belief was me grabbing the front brake on the 4th lap at the same place, but thankfully that time I didn't dump it.
I enjoyed the ride, the trail and the chicane (thanks for not having it as tight as last year's). I spent many minutes before heading up the forest visualising not dumping it each lap in front of everyone (I really was taking it all very seriously honest).
Next year my goal is to a) not get lost and b) not spot someone who needs help on the first lap. Big ups to the woman who stayed with the injured girl until the sweeps arrived and glad she's okay. Oh, if I get really keen, I may even bother to try to find neutral before the start. I dunno, some of us just aren't made for racing, but even so, these events have been fun.
What made the day better than last year, was having the juniors race after ours. Thanks to the WMCC crew and thanks to Kate for putting the event on the calendar initially. A big thank you also to those like Tracy who doesn't ride, but helped with sign-on and lap scoring. I'm actually looking forward to the next family day - wow, I'll have ridden more than 3 events this year.

Your rock! Yeah I was the other 'Drongo'! No matter, it was fun! Good on you for stopping! I love your narrative on the day! Yeah I think a few people got lost. I learnt from the day to follow the arrows, not the other riders. Good tip for next time. I'm keen on doing the next family day ride, liked the terrain!
I think it was a great plan having the juniors after our race as well, the track was mint when we went out, bet it wasn't so great later in the day!
