View Full Version : Riding trou?

Morning gents, I am wanting to get some more substantial riding trousers for adv riding, are there any particular breeds or brands that have stuck out as better than others or should I just hit TM for some cordura etc?
Want something with a bit more protection for if (>when<) I hit the ground cos it will happen, nothing surer.
Prefer something not too ventilated so the blokes don't freeze but obviously some venting or zipping for the same would be good, what does everyone here use?
Again all good input welcome.

For summer comfort & protection it's hard to beat some MX pants & separate MX knee guards. I've got some Axo pants & Fox knee guards that are holding up well.
I've had a couple of sets of allegedly waterproof cordura pants for cooler weather, the RJays set were ok but leaked after a while, the Mobig set were never very waterproof & most of the zips etc on them have fallen apart. They were both cheap admittedly. I currently use a rainsuit over them when it is wet.
Check the bottom of any trousers you buy for fit over the top of dirt boots - My supposedly 'adventure style' Mobig pants don't go over the bulky top of my proper MX boots very well, especially when I tried taking the armour out of their knees & using them with my Fox knee guards instead.
Cheers

Heya Clint
Cheers for that, I am actually using snowboard boots as they are warm and strong, I would prefer them to be higher but they will do for the mo.
Good point raise about trou fitting over them so will make sure of this, all the gear I have seen that is "waterproof" isn't, can't beat good old external wet gear.

one of the chaps left his pants to close to the fire last weekend and it melted the knee protection pad out of shape....:shit:

Sometimes the best stuff is the cheapest in all honesty...
I have found that the Line 7 range for farmers available in RD1 suits the purpose well..:shit:
A Swandri I sometimes wear gives me the best waterproofing on top. The mittens on the bike work well, keep my hands dry too.
I have all of the DriRider clothing top and bottom but the jacket keeps me dry but in the worst of the weather isn't much cop. The pants are not any good at all but if I wear the leggings over the top they are perfect for any conditions, plus they are adjustable for the Motocross boots.
For my feet though I have found that the Columbia Tramping boots I wear ARE waterproof, I didn't get a ml of H2O inside the boots the whole weekend of the MMMMM, so that was a bonus! A liberal dose of Snowseal all over helps to prepare for the worst conditions..

For adventure riding I wear a pair of skody old Spool Pants bought 2nd hand for about $100 (they were nicer when I bought them). They have a leather patch where I melted them on my exhaust, and they ain't waterproof, but they're armoured, and for the riding I do I invariably end up soaked from puddles, and frequently can off (usually at about 2km/h), so I didn't want anything too flash.

Cordura isn't the best. You'll still have sweaty undies/legs syndrome on a cold day.Having said that,I would still wear them on a longer ride due to more protection, but once things start getting twisty and tight I'd wish I have my MX pants on.I'm sure you could lose a few kilos wearing Cordura :D

+1 on the MX pants and knee guards. Only way I don't end up sweating like a .... Been down the road a couple or three times in this get up as well and the MX pants seem to last really well. I still use the first pair of MX paints I brought about two years ago.

I still just wear leather trou most rides. I like having armour too so on mission rides I sometimes slide in the mx knee guards under them. It's a bit of a tight fit though.
For my next pants I'd like some armored leather, maybe even some nice well vented ones.
In the rain and/or very cold days I use over trou over the leather.

So I reckon either Dririder Rally cross or 1tonne Cordura Sports Pants

or
http://www.morleymotorcycles.co.nz/motorcyclesmarine.php?category=3&brand=0&piece=370
Bit of a price difference and is it worth the difference?
Everyone I know with dririder gets wet so I will still rely on my leggings and wet jacket anyway, so it comes down to what will get better protection when I biff?
Again, input would be good especially from some with this gear.

Definitely not a fan of the rally cross pants. I had them before my current MX pants. The sizing is all up the wack - to get big enough around the waist the legs were redicuously long and I'm not "that" fat that it is normally a problem for me with other trou. Also they fit over boots really really well i.e. they are excessivly big over the boots.
It's good to have pockets and ventilation zips but they offer no more protection than MX pants - arguably less than my current Moose MX pants. The MX pants material is tougher and knee guards are much better than the poxy bits of snow foam (closed cell foam) in the rally cross's.

Mrs B has a pair of Dri-Rider cordura pants. Ironically named, as they aren't waterproof in anything more than a light mist. They're shite, but at an appropriate price. Interesting that people reckon they get hot in Cordura pants, I wear mine trail riding all through the Canterbury summer, no worries. I just zip the thermal liner out. But I'm pretty cold-blooded... The first few trail rides I did I wore a black nylon Dri-Rider jacket. Even I sweated rivers inside that horrid thing.
On the road I wear Rev-It pants, which someone else mentioned earlier. Waterproof, comfortable, nice looking, separate thermal and waterproof linings, hard armour etc, and vents that actually work. Pricey though, I paid 250 pounds for mine in the UK.

So I made a decision to get the 1Tonne sports as they have extra knee protection and side protection, zip out liner etc.
So I call them, well bugga me if they aren't sold out , missed by 2 days, fncken Murphy!!!
Next shipment in two months so my new dilemma ... do I wait or change my mind :bash: :bash: ... I only wonna buy a pair of pants .. how hard can it be :weep:

There must be different grades of Cordura? Mine are Quasimoto ones and they just don't breathe.Even on a cold day without the liner, you barely notice the cold.
But come a normal summers day,by god you can't wait to get them off - And when they do come off,you literally peel them off your legs.Don't get me started on the smell either!

I got Spool pants and really rate them. had them about 5 years and they still have nothing wrong with them. only ever washed them once. Got knee guards etc, and very abrasion proof, mind you i haven't been down the road in them. And reasonably waterproof.

I have DriRider rally cross for the summer, very minimal protection but they fit over the top of mx boots well, and have good venting, they came with a liner for the wet but I havn't used it yet, just get wet, it's summer, who cares.
Winter it's revit with a nice warm liner and they are very waterproof, also fit over mx boots well, got a Strada cordura jacket and it very waterproof too

I've been thinking about this lately also. MX pants have worked really well up to now, my only problem is that I look like a nob dressed up like a moto X'er with the missus on the back. Have been looking at some MX armour shorts to wear with my knee gaurds and then whatever pants I want over the top. Got all the protection sorted, only problem is not waterproof (have over trou) and abrasion resistance will not be great. Probably going to give this a go.

I actually use road bike leathers trou, cup knees, no sliders. These have vented lyra crutch & back of the leg panels. I switched back from cordura because at least leather breathes, and has some give. I use light weight wet weather trou over the top if it rains.
I had Spool Trou - hated them. Wouldn't breathe, and always it felt like I was riding in a bucket of sweat with them. The best thing that happened to them was when I farted out the inner waterproof membrane & they could finally left some air in down there (was that too much information, or what?) I've tried other cordura trou, including Spidi - just doesn't work for me.
Will likely look at some MX riding pants for summer, or maybe some draggin jeans or similar, though I survived last summer comfortably enough.

I've got 3 pairs of riding trou, my fave are MX pants cos they breathe well, can easily fit knee armour under, and dry quickly....but they ain't waterproof. It's all about when/where I'm riding, I'll dress accordingly.
If it's winter, raining, or mainly road riding, I use my Dainese H2Out cordura trou, warm, waterproof and good protection. Too bloody hot in summer, they don't breathe, and I sweat like the proverbial rapist if trail riding.
When it's warmer, it's either my Draggin Jeans Camo's with knee inserts, or MX pants for their breathability. The Draggins are quite warm in most seasons because of the kevlar panels, and are real comfortable, just like, um..... jeans. But they suck if they get wet, take ages to dry.
The general consensus is that cordura is good until you start getting physical, and once the sweating starts, it's all downhill from there. Comfort goes out the window when you've got sweat running down ya legs, and they stick like cling film. MX pants seem to tick the boxes for ADV riding because they're comfortable, offer ok protection, breathe well, and help prevent the dreaded Monkey Butt:2thumbsup

Me thinks this is the fabric thread count per sq inch or something.
300 is less thread, more breathable, less waterproof
600 is twice the thread, more waterproof, more expensive too.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong........

There are a few over-the-boot style MX pants coming onto the market, they look a lot more like normal trousers, but still have the abrasion resistance, venting etc. and are designed to fit MX boots and knee guards underneath. They generally aren't waterproof (but neither are dririder trou), which means they breathe a bit more and are comfortable in summer.

Other way around I though - larger the number the larger the thread diameter. Larger thread diameter seems to be more abrasion resistent but if it does wear through a bigger hole will open up with same number of cut threads. I to am happy to be corrected if I am wrong.
