A man was arrested yesterday after the Armed Offenders Squad was called out to Huntly.
He faces robbery charges after the stand-off that saw police establish an armed cordon around an address in the north of the town.
The case is linked to the theft of four motorcycles which were stolen earlier that day from Kihikihi. One of the vehicles is valued at around $60,000.http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10587340

Don't believe it for an instant, we all know the police do nothing but hand out speeding tickets and don't do anything about real crime

Correct, that is why the AOS were called in. The rest of the beak were on donut break or handing out tax tickets.:done:

it'll be interesting a few months down the track, to see if they found out where he was flogging the bikes off to. I doubt it's just those four that he took.
maybe some people on here will find out where there bikes went, or atleast who recieved the parts.

Cost of keeping prisoners jumps to $92,000 a year"
So, how again is this stopping a thief from stealing from us?

My god. That's because there's SkyTv, heating, 3 decent meals etc.
I can't even bloody afford Sky and I'm an 'honest' citizen!

I earn 32,000 a year.
That's $6400 in taxes per year.
It would take 15 of me just to support a single prisoner, and that's if our taxes paid for nothing else...
(No counting GST...)

I had occasion to visit a biker in Paremoremo, didn't look like any kind of picnic to me - if they were spending $92k pa on him it must have been through his per capita share of the total Justice department bill

They only got him because he was speeding from the scene.

Armed robbery of bikes in broad daylight? I think there is more to it than a bike theft.Maybe ''I want my bike back''......'Not until you pay for it'....and ultimatly he took it by force. And then went home.

Isnt bike theft the modern day equivalent of horse theft.
I though the punishment was a public hanging.

No and it's not ment to be a picnic.
I agree that not-so-serious crimes requiring jailtime should have better conditions than serious murderers and rapists etc, but SkyTV?

Yeah maybe, though reading this: http://www.infonews.co.nz/news.cfm?l=1&t=102&id=40069 tends to make me think it was possibly a gang related theft. Maybe a combination of the two?
