Just occurred to me try and ride from Wanganui to Invercargill tomorrow.
It will meaning getting on the road around 5am with next to no preparation, and hitting the road with next to no money.
Don't have money for accommodation so I'd have to keep on the road until I found my fathers house in Invercargill. Then I figure I can spend a day or two exploring the area and then ride back to Wanganui.
Cunning plan or just a shit idea?
Probably make the call at 5am.

Its a bad plan
1. You've got no dosh
2. You wanna ride a long way to get a sore arse on a fork
3. You will hurt yourself, as you gonna hit the road LOL

Two day ride at most, yes? So only one night sleeping in the ditch. You'd be sweet. I'd do it. But I'd probably sleep indoors somewhere...even if it was in a barn

According to maps.google.co.nz it takes about 20 hours by car (probably legal speeds and including ferry) and a total of 1191km.
Just search "Wanganui to Invercargill" and have a look for yourself.

If I left Wanganui at 5am, Id be leaving Picton at around lunchtime,Then its 915km to Invercargill. AA travel calculator states 13 hours.
hmmm....I'm a soft bastard, 5 hours is about my dash for a casual ride.

Sometimes no plan is the best plan of all, get a few zzz's on the ferry and a few rest stops on the way, sounds like a challenge.... :D
We did Invercargill to Pukerua Bay in one go a while back, so Wanganui's only what, a couple of hours more.....
Go on Doug...you can do it, get a perm before you go though...

Gotta tell you its cold and wet down south at the moment, although the weather has been like spring lately, certainly warming up.
I did Blenheim to Invercargill in May in 13 hours with 10min stops every hour or so. TBH I was shagged but a Wangavegas man like you - no worries! :sunny:
Let me know if you come down, should be around for bits of the weekend.

Weather forcast for the South Island, from Kaikora to the bluff,
Bought to you By Subikes Winter Knee,
Garrenteed to be as correct as the weather forcast on TV !
It was a mild 12 in Waipara this afternoon, with a sunrise at 7.45 am over Greta Valley .
Looking at a warm day tomorrow down the east coast.
8 the expected over night low,
12 again the midday high
No frosts expected so you will have a comfortable ride my end of the Island, The weather should continue to be fine all the way to south of Dunedin where you will run into winds and light showers by the time you get to Scumdogs house for supper.
From there to Invercargill, put the wet weather gear on, not only to combat the rain, but also the cold.
Enjoy.

I just did a 4 day round trip up north. 2000+K's. No plan, no organised stop overs. Enough money for petrol and a few dollars leftover. It rained and there was wind. I got wet, cold, tired. But fuck, what a trip! I wanna go again now!
Too late to sort my shit so I can come with you. Bummer!
Just Do It! (Maaan, that is a good one, wonder if I could use it or sell it???)

HA.
Cunning plan turned to shite.
And the wife was fine, The bike was packed, The oil levels had been checked and I was tucked into bed.
At which time #2 son woke up, and went ballistic (red head kids have the devil in them I reckon) anyway, By the time he calmed down and went back to sleep it was 2am.
Fucked if Im going to try and do that ride on 3 hours sleep so I disabled teh 5am alarm when I went back to bed.
Just going to head north some time today instead.

Well, that was interesting.
I'm standing in the servo at National Park, soaking wet,its pissing down, covered in mud, Bikes bent, I'm in a fair bit of pain from the hole in my leg,and the impact my head and shoulder took, sipping on a servo coffee and looking down the road mulling over the upcoming ride through the Parapara in shit conditions with bent handlebars.
Some Canadian fucker pulls up in his gleaming land-rover, Climbs out, Looks at me and says "great day for a ride", I think fuck you, But respond, "Yeah mate, Its an excellent day for a ride".

If you have had a a knock to the head, please take it easy and be very careful. I'm sure you know the perception problems even slight head injury can cause (even after allowing for the constant practice that your username suggests).

Anyway, Seeing as I didn't make it down south I decided to do the Coro loop as its always getting mentioned on these forums. I went Wanganui, Taupo, Tauranga (took a shortcut near Tauranga and lost an hour backtracking), Waiha, Whitianga.
As expected it rained like a bastard, and I damn near froze in the National park, The last hour was spent in the dark on treacherous wet, steep roads, roads with billions of corners. Hard work but enjoyable.
Stayed the night in Whitianga and then carried on around the loop, down to Thames, Paeroa, Te Aroha, Matamata, Tokoroa,Turangi, cut across National Park to Raetihi and then back to Wanganui.
The roads were pretty much wet the entire way, Which made all those hills in the Coromandel interesting to say the least. Coming down a hill near Turangi I managed to enter a corner carrying too much speed and in a shit position, Tried to tighten my line but to no avail, went wide into the grass and dropped her.
In a nutshell, I suck at riding, Lmfao, and my head was elsewhere, I was probably thinking about how awesome I was or something as equally retarded.
Anyway, Got the bike back on the road and carried on through national park and home.
All in all an enjoyable couple of days.

Yeah, Hard case, Bikes not to bad, Need new bars and brake lever.
When the bike came to a stand still I flipped her straight up onto her wheels, Then I was just blown away with relief about how that worked out, I had shit myself and once I realised my line through that corner was going to put me off the road had expected a pretty miserable outcome.
The stupid thing is I could go through that section of road all day and not fuck it up, so fuck knows what I was up to.

And here we are in HB, not much water the whole week, yesterday it was +16 and today it already feels like a nice spring day in the sun. And I was contemplating a change of scenery. Changed my mind.
Re your crash, just proves that when on a bike there is not a moment one can forget to focus. Glad you are fine!
I was planning a 2 day trip this coming w/e to Taranaki through the park. Down through PN, Wangas and NP, stay the night and back through the park andTaupo. Was hoping for sun...
