Lets take it away from he emotive thread of R1.
I bought a HD because it suited me and my riding style - ok I am short and slow. I have been on KB for a few weeks now and just dont get the anti-harley thing that seems to be going on.
Would someone please give me a logical debate as to why the negativity?

Hi there - a bloody good question as that thread got sooooo way out of line.
I live on the main road heading out to Taipupu (thus Akaroa) and get to witness all brands of bikes heading past my house.
Incidentally I've found stopping for a coffee at Little River a great spot to meet riders of all brands happy for a chat about bikes.
Rest assured regardless of what is ridden there are plenty of knobs speeding, passing on a blind corner and generally being foolish.
Harley bashing?
It means nothing, mostly it's just light hearted banter in the same vein as Hondas are gay, Suzukis crash, Kawasakis blow up, Ducatis cost a fortune to maintain, Triumphs leak oil ............
And then there are the KB windup artists ............ who enjoy nothing better than slagging off someones choice of ride to get a bit of bitch-slapping going for a few pages.
Personally I'd rather debate exactly what makes the 'best pie' as I have found the smokey pork & water cress pie from Hilmorton Bakery in Coppel Place extremely good, but also thoroughly enjoy the Venison pie Hellyers of Lincoln make.

You want a serious comment.
I have seen both deplorable and exemplary behavior from riders on all types of bikes - from sportsbikes to choppers. Hate the player, not the game.
The debate is a paraphrase of George Carlin's line about driving. 'Everyone going slower than you is an idiot, everyone going faster than you is an asshole.

Seems to me that you've got more of a problem with 'sprotsbike' riders than they have with HD's lol. Who really gives a flying fuck what you choose to ride. And if someone decides to judge someone solely by the bike they ride then their opinion isn't worth shit.
Get over it all and enjoy the ride. Fuck me, life is too short for this wah wah wah shit.

Its inverted backlash to generations of JAP CRAP bashing from the leaking oil brigade of the 70s and 80s. Do you have any idea how hard it was working on "Club members" bikes at a Harley Davidson shop monday to friday while riding to work on a Yamaha FZR750 and racing one in the weekends as well??? No wonder i have an identity crisis...

But lets face it mostly it is just said in fun these days, the real hardcore attitudes have mostly gone even amongst the "club" scene. Lots of them now ride Aprilla or KTM or such as well as Vrods and "normal" HDs.
I get to ride so many different bikes there is fun in all of them, even a scooter can be a good laugh if you let it...

What do you call a group of Harley Owners with a collective IQ of 120?
Sturgis !
What's the difference between a Harley Davidson and a Hoover vacuum cleaner?
The Harley has room for two dirtbags on board.
Why do Harley owners have tassels on their handlebars and clothing?
To be able to tell if they're moving or not !
How is a Harley Davidson like an old dog?
They both like to ride in the back of pickup trucks.
What is the difference between a Harley Davidson and an old dog?
The dog can get in the back of the pickup by itself.
How is a Harley Davidson like a Porcupine?
Both have pricks on their back.

I have no personal thing against any rider - you're out there doing it..... isn't that all that matters??
But.... when you are not allowed to ride with certain clubs, because you own a jap bike (and I've now found out that HD's are full of jap parts ), and they don't consider lifting their hand to give you a polite wave, it really is no wonder why attitudes are out there.
They have HOG rallies - do other brands of motorcycles go? NO, of course not - you'd be laughed at. We have rallies, and don't care who comes along. The more the merrier
So all in all, I think the attitude of HD riders stem from many years ago.
We're all riders out having fun, and I talk and ride with everyone I meet, regardless of who owns what :motu:

I've never ridden a H-D, or any larger cruiser. I am not overtly taken with larger cruisers or any bike at all, but I quite like the idea - maybe just for something different. It might be I was completely converted to them once I rode it one time only.. who can tell these things.. I'll ride one and then I will know.
I don't think there is a debate between sprotsbikes and cruisers. I just think they are different, and their owners are passionate about their own bikes and culture.
What I worry about mainly, is being part of their culture, which I am emphatically not. I am warm, inclusive, safe, and caring - mostly vastly amusing attributes to be belittled by the cruiser culture - well that is my outside view of it from what I have been subject to.
Prove me wrong - I invite it.

"Harley Riders" is a pretty broad church of folks. It includes criminal gang elements who ride them like they stole them (because they probably have), to the "born again" bikers of similar vintage to me who ride them because they like them and can afford them. And a wide swadge of folks between these two extremes.
Harley Davidson is the world's most recognised motorcycle brand. Some people use Harley ownership to define themselves and their "lifestyles", others don't.
There are some absolutely top-draw folks out there who ride Harleys.
Remember that all generalisations are false -- including this one.

I don't give a rats behind what bike people ride, it is after all a personal choice. A bit of inter-brand rivalry and piss taking is fine, though some do take it way too far over the line, and of course others are overly sensitive.
I regularly ride with people with all kinds of brands from HD's through to the big four Japanese brands and none of us really cares who is riding what, we're more interested in the riding and the camaraderie.

Nice thread MadDuck.
Motorcycle cliques are funny things. I am currently on a SV (apparently it is a girls bike) but I have lots of fun on it.
I never thought I would own a harley. I believed the were tractors that handled really badly, would be stolen before I got to the door after I parked it at home for the first time and would cost a bomb to insure. Not to mention I couldn't afford one in the first place.
In the intervening years of motorcycling, harleys have got better (in my rather inexperienced opinon).
Now for my next bike I was looking at a cruiser (again). In the past I have ridden the jap cruisers - specifically Suzuki's. It was the 700 and then the 1400 cc intruder. I have test ridden the big Kwakkas as well. But they are a little boring.
So I thought I would look at the Triumph Speedmaster, and in looking found out the XL1200C was about the same price as the Trumpy. So next year I will have a decision to make.
I also understand the Sportsters are girls harleys - I can only imagine what is said of the speedmaster.
So no matter what you ride - someone is poking fun at it. For me while it is good natured it is all good. And if someone is really serious about it, I just nod, smile and ignore the fuck out of them.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO - its about people buying expensive chrome tractors which vibrate and are unsuited to New Zealand's epic roads. And purchasing the HD myth about American iron, the legend, "the road...(groan)", all the advertising hoopla which goes with the marque. :dodge:
Its just like American television shows. The gritty stuff is so earnest and full of moral lessons that they are shoved down the viewers throat. And the so-called comedies have a laugh track just to tell you when its funny......:Oi:
So it is with Harley Davidson. Their marketing and design departments have never heard the word "subtle". Nothing cannot be overstated. Everything has to shine and capture the rebel freedom dream, all available just down the road from your local dealer......:girlfight:
That's why kindly KBers try to educate those who have been hypnotised by the HD gotterdammerung. :Pokey:

I does occur to me in this fine debate that possibly I am smack-bang in the middle by riding a naked bike (Honda as it is).
Surely that's the best of both worlds by sitting more upright than a sport bike but less reclined than a cruiser.

I don't get it either. It's just prejudice at the end of the day. We all generalise then meet someone that forces us to question those generalisations. Then we see the HOG crowd go by like their shit doesn't stink and, well, it all starts again...

Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. They make fucking marvellous tourers and actually ride quite smoothly. Believe what you will, I've covered tens of thousands of k's on HD's on NZ roads and all has been good. They can be loaded up with tents or whatever and take it all in their stride.
Sure, you don't get your knee down and all that sportsbike bollocks but that sort of pseudo-macho crap should be saved for the track anyway.
Look you - I came here for a good argument - not abuse!!

All the HOG people I have ridden with or had dealings with have been very nice and pleasant to me.
They promote safety and ride by the road rules and have some really spectacular bikes. They have my respecs.

I've even ridden with BMW GS and Ural riders who were mostly quiet nice....
(As long as you kept them sedated - yes, you know who I'm talking about!!)

Ah Harleys...we love 'em.
In fact we love 'em so much we've even got an H-D owner in the Victory Riders.
The bikes were getting a bit dirty and we needed a prospect to clean them

Bollox to that!
I would like to think that at the historic moment when two motorcyclists first met on the road... that the comments made were along the lines of "what speed does she do" and not "how many miles to the gallon".
Bikes have always been about speed/acceleration/handling etc otherwise they would never of progressed past the Harley/Indian 'mould'.
But was'nt it an Indian that won the first Isle of Mann?
Until lighter and faster Brit Singles took over. Then Italian fours,Japanese...
Progress eh? some just wanna live in denial.

Harlies..... I love them, I would find it real hard to go back to a sports-touring bike after the Road King.
Harley owners are a varied bunch, you meet everything from a building labourer to the director of the reserve bank on one. While the sports bike riders all seem to have pimples and live at home.
Like with any group some most Harley riders are real nice folk while others are not, thats life, get over it.

I guess that my old girl is a bit of a cross between a sport bike and a tourer.
It was the quickest on the block when it was first released, but could also comfortably travel from one end of the country to the other leaving the rider feeling good at the end of the ride.
It is not a sports bike by todays standard, but was when It was new.
So where dose that put it in this discusion?
A sports bike has been refined over the years to be a purpous built machine, the intention to go as quick as possible with the minimum of fuss, with the best brakes and the best acceleration.
It should take its rider to the destination, or end of a race as fast as practicable.
A Harley on the other hand, has been refined to be the most comfortable of bikes, purpous built to takes its rider at a sedate speed with a good comfort level, able to carry enough baggage without compromising its performance, and leave the rider refreshed at the end of the journey able to spend a night in the pub talking shit.
The two bikes are so different from design and purpous that it is foolhardy to try and compare the two of them.
Also the riders of each mode are as different as the bikes.
They usually have very little in common, come from differing social backgrounds and if it was not for the fact they both ride bikes to ralleys, probably would never meet anywhere else in life.
But excemptions are always with us

Good post !
You will always get the exception that comes from one of them back grounds, who also enjoys the thrill a sports bike can bring !
Lucky for me the british have caught up lol
Now that i have the bikes that can give the thrills of a sports bike, i am looking to obtain a harley as well so i can enjoy the chug chug (or is that poe-ta-toe poe-ta-toe) from social background to social background without the tyre (and licence) shredding acceleration that has you twisting the throttle at every opportunity !

only ridden one harley.......loved it, was a glide of some sort.
there is a stereotype attached to harleys that I don't like, so when I get one I will remove the branding.
I understand people taking the piss out of tassel clad harley riders but I don't do it myself, there are good and bad people riding all sorts of bikes.
they are nice to ride. as far as fast goes I see people on touring bikes keep up with sports bikes. I think if you are a good rider you could get a harley to move along at a fair clip on corners, though you may need to raise it a bit.
bikes are not just about fast to me, thats why I own 2.
people who slag harleys should stop, its just the same as harleys owners slagging jap bikes.

Each to their own.
Harleys might not be my cup of tea,but i don't "hate" them.
In fact, their are some models that they do that i quite like.
I have a heap of mates with them, and go on rides with them from time to time.
Fact is,i'm a speed freak,so i own a sportsbike.
Pretty simple really.
But IMO,anything with 2 wheels is cool.
And if everyone had the same taste,it would be a boring world!
One thing i don't like,is people trying to force their brand choice on others.
One mans medicine, can be anothers poison.

heh, in my experience the first comments are in regards to the weather, and then the destination. Never had any twat want to talk a numbers game, it would take a pretty fragile ego to start that conversation.
That would be the end of the conversation.
