I have water in my engine oil!

Bugger! Anyways anyone know of anything good to flush it out with ? i gather im not going to get it all out for like 3 or so oil changes...

I remember wiping out in a big clay puddle in mungatuks. But it only covered buttom half of the engine so trying to work out where water got in to the engine on my 03 yzf450... any ideas ?

Also any easy way to rule out that the water was from the puddle not my coolant apart from the radiator level? Because the level is down but not by much and i haven't toped it up in ages....

Cheers

Your cooling system can be pressure tested. If it holds pressure, it's probably not from there.

did it fall on the left hand side ...might have gone up the engine breather pipe ? just keep changing the oil till theres no more water,, is there water still in your radiators ?? oh if the levels down you may want to give it a pressure test just to be on the safe side ... have you drained the oil ?? how much water was there??

If you stalled with the oil breather in water that would do it.

I'd go for diesel ( twice )
get some cheapish oil & filters,
- fill up with oil run on idle for 5 minutes, drop the hot oil
- Put a new filter in, fill up with cheap oil again & run for another 5 minutes, drop the oil hot.
- New filter, good oil, go ride, after that ride, new oil, new filter, then back to normal.

Never done it of course :innocent::innocent:

As in that stuff for cars from repco ?

Ummm it fell to the right and stalled i caught it before the whole bike went in the drink, then tried kicking it over with the bottom part of the engine in the water (Now that i think about it that was a dumb idea) but i thought as the water wasn't near the air box or plug it would be safe.... It wouldn't kick over after like 15 kicks or so pulled it out gave it like another 20 or so kicks and got started...

Yep still water in the radiator only gone down a little, i thought with the 03 yzf450 would always use a bit of water from (Not a big amount just small amount) because it will expand when hot and go out the over flow pipe to the ground?

Apparantly on the 2009 design bikes (And not sure what other years) they actually have a coolant overflow bottle to catch it.

Cheers all for your help

How much water was in the engine ? or Radiator ?

Radiator not missing much at all its down about 2-3 cm from the lid but i haven't checked the level for a couple of rides

In the engine, well the water and oil have combined to make this really cool white gooey stuff, looks like it will be a nitemare to get it all out. Esp with the oil running through the frame on this bike

All good suggestions, but how about this.

Remove the crankcase breather from the air box, and run the engine until it's above normal operating temperature....... the water will evaporate through the breather and in to the atmosphere (rather than the vapor going into the air box, then, when cool, running back into the crankcase as would normally be the case)

Of course DO NOT RIDE ANY WHERE NEAR WATER when running with no breather.....that could end in tears!

Ahh the oil breather in the water... ? Ok so it would suck it up or something while kicking over ?

Was thinking about starting it for like 5mins with some car oil same grade Castrol edge syntec 10 30 with no oil filter. Then drain as much as i can out and chuck a oil filter in and some new oil and go for a ride then change it again straight after...

Hmm i really need to get a washable oil filter me thinks...

So diesel is allgud ?

Not to sure if it'll suck in when you kick start, certainly stalling can do it.

I used something like Edge Syntec, can't remember exactly, I reckon you need two washes ( diesel & oil ), that foamy stuff you end up with in the motor is not so easy to get out, I filled it with diesel to the top, put the cap on & flipped it side to side a bit to try & run the diesel around.

Diesel is easier on rubber & bearings, was what I got told.

This will homogenise the water with the engine oil, into a nice creamy golden mess - it will be only useful for spreading on your arse. The water will not evaporate at all.

But hey look at my avatar, do I look like a scientist?

yeah man. don't "run it to evaporate the water" that's rediculpus. I have siezed the cams into the head of my bike running it on "water paste oil" and I did it in the mungotuks too lol. Bad idea. Mine sucked water through the breather when i stalled in a puddle too.

When you've flushed it with oil and got it sorted re route your breather into the air box and put a little filter, soaked in foam filter oil, on the end. You can get little pod filters from supercheap... the boy racers put em on valve cover breathers

Not if its a "wet" (excuse the pun) clutch ... motorcycle oil.

Oh mint yep i know excatly what filters you are talking about we use them as oil breathers on cars.....

So just wanting to confirm where the breather is ... ? The black rubber tube coming out the top of the eninge near the spark plug ? and goes down by my gear lever... ?

I ended up using a tiny bit of engine flush (I'm sure ill find out over time if it was good for the clutch or not) and some new oil, run it for about 10mins with out a filter on the stand in first gear idling.... then drained it.... put a new lot of oil in and it looks mint now!!!! Had the mean ride out there on the weekend just been....

Not keen to get water in ther again haha, so keen to relocate this breather

Have alook on thumper, search the yz 450 forum, under breather mods some good stuff on there
The latest mod they do is, the breather comes back from the head and into a y junction, the bottom hoses carrys on down to drain any crap and the other end goes into the air box that way it doesnt mater if the bottom hose is under water as it will breather through the one in the airbox, and because you still have a hose that drains to the bottom of the bike no crap goes into the airbox

We all knew that was gonna happen, "power rider" didn't do the trick then?

We're planning on Tangi this Sunday coming and possibly Poti or Long Gully (dependant on weather) Sat arvo, welcome to join us either day :Punk:

Drain the oil and replace the filter and oil. And run. Any very small remaining amount of water will evaporate. Draining and replacing the oil 2 or 3 times will be a watse if you give the bike a good run daily or so. If it will be a few weeks before the next ride, then there may be merit in so doing to prevent a little rust.

If you want to check after an hour or 2 of running, drain a teaspoon full into a teaspoon and heat with a ciggi lighter. Any remaining water in the oil will cause the oil to spit like chips in hot oil.

If you are concerned that it moisture may come from your cooling system instead of outside contamination, Take 200 ml of the oil to your local caterpillar dealer, Buy an oil sample bottle from the parts store, and post to the lab with a note to "please test for positive glycol" Sodium and probably Potasium and a positive glycol result will confirm your worrst concerns.

About $35....

Would of also been my mates yzf450 is well but it bloody blew up after getting the head gasket done at motormart before the race at spectro (Not sure on spelling) on the weekend... funny after being at motormart.... :Pokey:

We found a few new places to ride... with jumps etc :P everyelse is more then welcome to come... Hell if it gets so big we might even bring the BBQ somewhere in the 4wd.... :P

@ barty and rittr: fuck ya's, hah. haven't been on the power rider for even longer than i haven't been on the bike... there was no motivation if i couldn't ride (and it was fucken hard on the gammy shoulder when i did try it). Took up smoking again due to depression lol, also a throwback of not riding...

Evoetr, sounds crazy. how the hell can ya ride with pit bikes and a 4wd? I'll probably have to skip this weekend but will probably go up there next.

Rittr. txt me next weekend and let us know your plans. Sorry i forgot to txt ya on sunday morn and didn't get your text till we'd left on sunday (no reception)
