Yesterday, I fergot the petrol prices were going up 5.62c/litre today (if you include the extra tax-on-a-tax), but the VifFerraRi's fuel gauge was doing the blinky thingo (technical term). So, I filled up on the way to work today - $24.20 (and that wasn't even a full tankload! First time I've ever paid over $20 to fill a bike up.
I don't agree with this extra tax, given that only a third (?) of the current 'road tax' actually gets spent on roading anyway. And then some eedjit in THe Harold this morning says "Motorists aren't paying their way"
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/index.cfm?c_id=1&ObjectID=10118127
WTF?!? So, I read on a bit further, thinking that surely this is a Jolly April Fool's Bit of Jolly Japery, and sure enuff, the 'study' (musta bin conducted in the turlet one morning) included 'costs' such as the cost of the land the roads are built on, environmental costs, and noise pollution.
Kind of a 'coincidence' that this blatant bullshit appears the same day as the petrol tax is upped, doncha think? Are they softening us up for the next attack on our wallets?

ouch. I filled up last night cos I remembered about the hike, but I was also running on fumes. It cost me $16.50 from empty, so we'll see what it is next week.. Might be able to start collecting FlyBuys!

The trouble is, Lou, that an awful lot of the crap that goes on is, I believe, due not to whoever is in 'power', but the grey-faced, grey-suited bureaucrats who make careers out of fucking up the country to justify their existence.
And having looked at the cockups the various National and Labout gubmints have made over the last 25 years, neither party is any better than the other. And GrinPiss have now made some inroads with their stupid ideas, like the economic suicide the Kyoto Protocol could become.
The proliferation of stupid ideas, policies and inane laws won't stop with a change of gubmint.
One day, when I'm God, I'll abolish most of the laws that protect us from our own stupidity, and let nature take its course....

However, the upside is that I now have an even stronger argument, to drop to one car and two bikes. I'm thinking a Goose 350 for commuting.
I have to go and begin implementing my eviiiil plan.

Watching the business program on TV 1 this morning. The comments on the price of fuel . At the moment it is at $52.00 a barrel. The prediction is it could go to $110.00 a barrel in the next few years. Could it have been an April fool thing? Me thinks not. So there will be more bikes on the road as this cost goes up. Feck if you double what we are paying now I for one would have to cut the weekend thrash back. Maybe that's the idea................Fecken lefty greeny fucken ......bloody.......... arrrrrrrrrrr. :angry2: :drinknsin :shifty:

Fuel prices can only go up, there is such a steep increase in demand world wide. Yeah I think we could definately see 110 a barrel in the future, thatll hurt the SUV market.

True. There's no real alternative since the demise of the McGillicuddy Serious Party. The greens do their best, but are really amateurs. Besides I don't trust anyone who composts their own shit.
I guess that leaves Winnie and I do like cynical stirrers. But would voting for him make me officially aged?

Due mainly to the demand from China and Japan as I see it. They are on an industrial rise and that needs shit loads of energy........Fuel........ The states need it to keep from freezing and we want it to go forward faster. Suppose that's the way of the world. Wounder how I can get my bike to run on LPG like my Van. I could always compost my own shit and ride on Bio gas................ :shake:  :killingme :killingme

There's nothing worse than a bodgy "economic analysis" to get my day off to a good start. Some of these so-called "economists" wouldn't know if they had a bus up their arse until somebody rang the bell and wanted to get off!
This nong (as quoted in the Harold and the Dumb Onion Post) doesn't seem to have noticed that we already have roads and roading infrastructure. Methinks that these have probably been paid for and that the annual maintenance on them (albeit pitiful) has probably been paid for as well. OK, these may not have been directly funded by road users, but they've still been paid for. The "value" of the land these amenities occupies is academic as well, as this "value" is enhanced by the presence of the road itself.
As for the "cost" of future roads... I guess we'll burn that bridge when we get to it.

China and USA together consumes around 40-50% of the worlds oil supply. The fundamental reason for global oil and most commodity price rises is a result of the booming economy experienced by China. Before you all start criticising China for pushing up oil price, think for abit. China has and will continue to keep the global economy running at full steam, this means jobs and put money in our pockets. As a result, NZ is experiencing an export boom for our primary products (dairy, meat...etc).
ps: Time to bring on the hydrogen vehicles. :Punk:
Back to the thread topic. I agree that the government should not tax us more with the new oil tax. Unlike other large overseas cities, we dont have the public transport infrasctructure to support a high petrol cost. Simply, we dont have an alternative to cars and bikes as a means of transport. To catch a bus that comes every hour is just piss poor and not good enough. :angry2:

Diesel didn't go up!! :shake:  It cost me another $120 in road user charges though....
Back in the early 70s I had an International AS110 pick up truck that we used as our dirt bike hauler...it did 4 mpg on a good day (adjustable main jet I could screw in) One day I took a mate with me on a weekend of off road riding and drunken parties, our two bikes on the back...split the fuel bill eh? He shit himself when we filled up in Silverdale - ''FUCK!! that took over ten bucks!! I've never put $10 of gas into a car before!'' I sometimes wish I had that truck again, but these days even starting it would cost more than $10!

Isn't a goer until the energy gained from Hydrogen exceeds the amount expended to extract it.

Sad, but true.

As the energy gained from hydrogen is pretty much constant (unless we want to tamper with more violent (and potentially poisonous) reactions than "2H2 + O2 = 2H2O"), that will mean finding more efficient means of liberating Hydrogen from its various compounds.
Chrysler-Benz's "Natrium" system (Sodium Borohydride) is great so far as a safe way of storing the hydrogen (chemically) and efficiently releasing it on demand (catalyst) and it's reuseable (rehydrate the "sludge" left after use) but the costly bit is getting the hydrogen to rehydrate the stuff. Current electrolysis and chemical extraction methods are costly and/or pollute just as much as petrochemicals.
Another alternative is a fuel cell that runs on Natural Gas - it is not as "clean" as a hydrogen fuel cell but it is cleaner than an internal combustion engine ("low emission") and NG is easier to get than hydrogen.
Then there's always: build a methane fuel cell and use Gixxer 4 ever's "bio gas" (or Riff Raff's farts)

People reckon that with oil demand rising and the kiwi falling its only going to get very worse. Apparently oil companies need to raise the price (as if they need a reason) because of rising costs but don't want to push 91 through the "psychological" barrier of $1.30.
Oh, and the government now takes $0.61 and the companies get $0.68.

im not too worried about petrol prices,,,, yet, im more worried about the increase in other products that are oil based, like tyres, fairings, electrical insulation, rubber orings for my paintball gun. Hell everything plastic really, cos all oil based products will be bound to be on the rise too in the near future.
But the petrol price hikes are putting me off wanting to get an xv650
The email we got at work from our supplier Caltex had Petrol going up 5 cents a litre and Diesel going up 2 cents a litre, both + gst

Rising fuel prices will put everything up, everything. And the really shitty thing about it all is - those friggin Americans STILL buy SUVs, and those friggin chinese still want to be Americans (mate's just got back from 3yrs in China). So how does that place half the worlds oil supply?
