View Full Version : A 'For Sale', and a general goodbye

OK, guys. I've had a bit of an 'experience'.

Coming down the northwestern motorway this morning, filtering along, I was feeling pretty energetic. Came up behind a CBR6, swapped into lane 1A, and pulled ahead of him. He decided it was a race, so I thought 'what the hell', and it was all on.

130-ish through very slow traffic around St Lukes, and it was getting pretty hairy. I have no idea what I was thinking, but I was just going with the flow, you know?

And then this truck pulls over in front of him. I saw it happen, he was slightly ahead of me at the time. He had *nowhere* to go. I hit the picks at the same time he did.

I think he used up 8 of his 9 lives, right there. He stoppied, bigtime, right up between the lanes, right up to the back of this truck. I swear I saw a puff of smoke come off his front tyre. He was still moving pretty quick on the front wheel 20 meters or so before he would have hit. Perhaps Rossi is visiting Auckland and commuting on a CBR6 and nobody's mentioned it, because this bloke then managed to put the back wheel down, find a gap to the right, and squirt down the tiny bit of space next to the concrete barrier. We both sort of pulled back into the fast lane together, looked at each other, and wobbled off toward town. I didn't see him again, I think he left the motorway at Newton Road.

Basically, I'm kicking myself. I don't know why I did that, and I sure as hell know that neither I nor my bike would be capable of what that dude on the Honda just did.

And it's had an effect on me. I've just been sitting here, at my desk, thinking about it for a couple of hours, and I know that much as I've loved (and believe me, I really have) riding, I just don't think I can control myself as well as I should. Most of the time I can, but it's that last 1%, the one where I *think* it'll be fine... I don't think I can handle the thought of what might happen.

So, I guess this is it, guys. The Zeal's up for sale, I know quite a few of you are keen on it. :)

I'll put up a thread in the trading section shortly.

Best wishes, happy riding, and a long and prosperous life to all of you.

Dan out.

Sorry...

Don't get this? You are selling your bike because someone else is a better rider or because you let the red mist control you for a bit... Um... Are you giving up on cars as well because this is all about self control...

Dan, we all do dumb shit every day. Yours was very dumb of course (no ned to thank me) but how do you think you get to be an old and experienced rider? You will most likely never do that again... You learnt something.

Besides, when I started to ride I had 2 mates that were like the other guy. I worshipped their ability and was dead jealous. Neither of them ride now, it turns out they were not better than me, just LOT luckier and a little braver. As soon as their luck ran out one day they gave up because they suddenly realised what they were all about...

Don't sweat it, what ever you decide but. MAKE SURE it is a rational decision.

Cheers

a bit drastic don't you think. After all hopefully you should have learnt something from this. After all you did walk (ride/wobble) away from it and now you are wiser and smarter because of it :yeah:

Give it a bit of time and see how it goes, but as ever it's your life, and you should do what you want to do. Don't let people like me pressure you into riding, when your hearts not in it.

that this was a one off.

It wasnt you that had the close call it was the other rider.

Dont be hasty in thinking of selling the bike...
take a day or two to think about it... wait til after the weekend.
Then decide.

But in the end only you can decide what you want to do.
All the best.

If this is not a wind-up, then I suggest you don't do anything for a while. Two hours considering it is NOT long enough. If this is a wind-up, then hardy-har-har. But what I am about to say may help someone else.

Either way, STOP BEING A DICK!!

When I trowelled my VFR the year before last, and I was lying on my back on the road in pain, I thought. "Fuggit! This HURTS! I've had enough of this!" (and it got worse...)
And I seriously considered chucking biking in, due to the danger, the ongoing degradation of my riding enjoyment from commuting on the bike every day, the ongoing costs associated with it as far as insurance, gear, maintenance, etc. etc. I even very nearly bought an Alfa Romeo, after test-driving a series of cars that weren't too boring to replace the bike. In the end, I decided I wasn't quite ready to give riding up just yet. It's just too cool, putting on the bike gear and riding. It's just too nice when you get a corner "just right". It's just too much of a buzz riding something with a higher power-to-weight ratio than any car you or I could afford.

And what about that Buell you were going to buy, and haven't even test-ridden yet? :spudwhat:

You'll kick yourself if you revert to being nothing more than another boring Camry-driving commuter. :Pokey:
More than you're now kicking yourself (or not) for riding like a twat.

I don't know why I did that
I just don't think I can control myself as well as I should.
Dan, I don't think selling the bike will fix what ails you.

If you've exibiting a lack of self control I expect it does or will surface in other areas of your life. I think you'd be best dealing with the cause of your problem, rather than the symptoms i.e. crazy riding.

In the meantime get a photo of your wife and kids and attach it to your top triple clamp. Have a look at that when you start to ride beyond your limits. I think it'll slow you down.

Stop riding if you MUST, but don't sell the bike. For a moment in my life I'd had a gutsful of bikes and sold a few which I really regret now. Still have one I'm going to the grave with though.

Just wait till you've spent a month crawling to work in the traffic, and the sun's shining, and there's nothing on the radio worth listening to, or it's drizzling and the traffic is REALLY crawling, and then some fuckwit prangs, and the traffic is backed up to Manakau, and . . . . . . .

Of course there's more fun to be had on a bike than in traffic. It does sound like good skills for the other guy and a bit of luck maybe.

A moments brain-fade is something to learn from.

Scary as hell Dan, and I know exactly what you're going through. I've been through it a couple of times over the years, and it's one of those moments/periods in your life where you do the, "Are the inherent risks associated with riding a bike combined with the arseholes on the road worth it? Particularly when you have a family' type equations.

I went through it for 24 hours, possibly more, after my recent (and thankfully only ever) high speed off. But I believe I've now put the 'off' behind me and learnt from the error of my ways. I've made the rational decision to carry on biking. Although I have promised Ms Biff that should I ever have a major off, and either live through it or come away reasonably intact, then I will seriously consider whether the risks of biking outweigh the pleasures.

My advice is as has already been said here. Take you time before making such a decision. Give it a few days, weeks or even weeks if need be. But I’d most definitely put off making the decision until such a time as you over the shock of this incident.

As for being sucked into the ‘racing vacuum’, I think it’s fair to say we’re all guilty of this sometime.

If this is indeed a wind up....I'm glad to see another dangerious biker off the road, you're a menace to all cage driver.

I started off riding motorcycles at the age of eight. Not long after that I wrecked the old man's A100. Basically I was ready to quit bikes right there and then. The old man made me get back on the bike (it still went OK, just had broken/bent bits and a bent frame) and go back around the courner until I figured out why I had crashed and how to avoid it in the future :niceone:
Now tell me, jrandom. Why makes you think in that situation you'd be better off not on a bike and in a cage? Sounds like a car would have probably wore the truck unless it was of the higher preformance type. I remember reading someones signature "I do not intend to tip toe through lifee to end up safely at the grave. But rather swing it sideways at the last minute, yelling, holly shit what a ride!!!" Get back on the bike and learn from the experience, you just might be kicking yourself in the future if you dont.
I got taken out severely about a decade ago and ended up on hospital for a while. Some dumbarse in a car that "did not see me". Yea right, thats why the wankess ended up with a careless driving charge! It took me six and a bit years to actually get back onto a bike! And I was a fucking wimp! Would not lean over around courners or even do the speed limit! That was over a year ago now and I'm at the stage where I would be liking a faster sports bike. The funny thing is that the bike I am wanting is the 2005 CBR600RR and your story just makes me want one more.
Come on bud, get back on the bike. Do it for yourself, not anyone else...

If you believe that you are no longer in control then the best thing to do is to regain control. If that means stop riding then so be it.

When I had the Tiger 100 I used to do things that even now gives me heebie jeebies. I got off because sooner or later Lady luck was going to divorce me as she will you if you do not control her. There are other options in life that can be as exciting as riding. It sounds as if you have decided and made the choice. I wish you all the best and remember that one day, like I did, you may come back.

Did anyone see John Campbell's pathetic "Stewart Isalnd Secret US Military Base" story?

I thought it was well done, only clicked at the end when they mentioned April Fools. No telling what the gubmit will do these days. Though it was a bit hard to believe that Hellen would be jumping into bed with the Americans.

Yep. Midday is when it ends. If someone "gets" you after that time, you say: "April Fool's is dead and gone, you're the fool and I am none."
