Couple accidentally gas themselves to death with an outdoor patio heater - in their bedroom:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/2706942/Couple-found-dead-accidentally-gassed-themselves

Detective Senior Sergeant Keith Borrell said the coroner would make a formal announcement about the deaths once all he had reviewed all the medical evidence.

"However early indications are that this couple have died as a result of a tragic accident," he said.

"I would like to take the opportunity to raise people awareness of the dangers of having outdoor equipment such as gas patio heaters and gas barbecues inside the home, as it may well turn out that such equipment caused this tragedy. These products are designed for outdoor use only."

Translation: It would appear these people were too stupid to be alive.

Cant be a Darwin, they've already bred.....

My thoughts exactly. The thing on the radio that I heard said that the couple died due to carbon monoxide (or whatever gas it is, wasn't really listening, didn't really care) poisoning..... Or due to being stupid. I feel sorry for their kids.

With the cost of power bills it's not too surprising that people resort to foolish measures to keep warm. Especially somewhere as bloody freezing as Taumarunui!

Few years back, in Blenheim (!!), three kids were huffing LPG from a bottle in a car - until one lit a cigarette.

That is crazy human stupidity is amazing. You should never use a gas heater of any sort in your bedroom, unless its flued.
Most modarn gas heaters have ods (oxygen depletion sensor) built in, but really your trusting your life with something that has come out of a random factory in china not for me.

There was one where 4 guys stuck in a car overnight somewhere like Arthurs Pass used a camp stove for heat. They never woke up.

Sad.

Stupid, but frankly I can see how it could happen. It's not that obviously dumb, nor are some of the things we are told are dangerous (101 km/hr!!) always that dangerous.

Not everyone is that smart, you know.

I feel sorry for the kids, shit experience to find your parents dead when you wake up in the morning....

+1 This's a much sadder fact. Gotta say there are much more deserving recipients of Darwins Law.

It wan't the appliance itself that was the issue, its the LPG. Same result would have occured from using a LPG heater in a closed room

Few of us have not done a "it seemed like a good idea at the time" thing ....

Terrible tragedy.

Those poor kids, imagine waking up to find your parents dead.

Yes, the dangers should be known, obviously not in this case.

Sad, very, very sad.

These people have died through their own missadventure.

They were ignorant to a basic fact and I would say that this is very sad indeed.

I am not happy about referring to these dead people as stupid. It is totally disrespectful. They may have been good people in many ways. They may have had tallents that others do not have. We don't know the facts and to label them in this way is basically saying that they deserved to die. I doubt their kids will ever agree with that.

I also doubt anyone on here will be honest enough to admit to NOT knowing that outdoor heaters are for outdoor usage only and this is for a very good reason.

I hope that some or many will learn from this tradgedy.

Not stupid, just wanting to be warm. This is such a sad story and I feel for the poor couple who died and their bereft children.

You can buy any number of gas heaters for your house, why should a patio heater be any different?? Same gas used. Ok, we now know the inside ones have a safety device but many many people will have no idea.

Even people who know about this stuff get caught. Three DOC staff died in a tent on the Chathams a few years ago because a gas cylinder leaked.

Lets have compassion for this family.

Not so much that we let them breed so much as pay them to by way of the DPB

Because no-one gave you the right to stop them.

Oh I do have compassion for their family, as I said I feel sorry for their kids. However if I'm cold I put on some
more clothes or have a hot shower and get into bed, not bring the patio heater inside. I bet there's a bloody great big warning somewhere on those things warning about them not to be used indoors. And while we're on the subject.... Why the hell do people have those things? What is the point? If you're outside and it's cold, why not go inside instead of trying to warm up outside? It's like having a dehumidifier going with the doors open!

Maybe not. A heater designed for indoor use will have a low oxygen sensor . A heater designed for outside use only will not.

Thru work we fill LPG bottles daily, as for sensors on heaters for low levels first time Ive heard about them, personally I would not use a portable gas heater.

Me too. The stupid gene appears to be dominant not recessive. They're going to have hard lives.
