View Full Version : Seven Summits Spring Safari

CrazyFrog

I feel it's my time to step up to the mark and organise a ride to be done sometime over the next couple of months. Spring weather is normally warm enough to do a longer day, and hopefully we won't have issues with late snow blocking any routes (Mt Arthur and Mt Patriarch).

Here's the proposed route, distances are not exact but close to it.

Seven Summits Spring Safari - 1 Day ride

Nelson - Wakefield 28 km
Wakefield - Dovedale Saddle -Jacobs Ladder - Ngatimoti 38 km
Ngatimoti – Mt Arthur Flora carpark 16 km
Flora carpark to Woodstock Bridge 17 km
Woodstock to Kohatu (inland Mot Hwy) 26 km
Kohatu to Spooner Top Rd (SH6) 9 km
Spooner Top Rd to St Arnaud (SH63) (FUEL@ 177km) 43 km

St Arnaud to Mt Robert carpark return 14 km
St Arnaud SH63 to Renwick (FUEL@ 105km) 91 km

Renwick to Northbank Rd SH6 5 km
Northbank, Onamalutu Rd, Kiwi Rd, Bartletts Crk, Fabians Crk 35 km
Fabians Creek Intersctn, Northbank Rd to Top Valley Rd 12.5km
Mt Patriarch summit return 61 km
Top Valley Intersctn to Northbank SH6 Intersctn 33 km
SH6 to Havelock (FUEL@ 171km) 24 km

Havelock to Pelorus Bridge 19 km
Pelorus to Mangatapu to Nelson 45 km

Total KM’s: 517 km
Summit Altitudes:
1. Dovedale Saddle 350m
2. Mt Arthur Flora Saddle 1000m
3. Spooner Tops 350m
4. Mt Robert carpark 900m
5. Mt Patriarch 1470m
6. Onamalutu/Kiwi Rd 575m
7. Mangatapu 800m

This will be predominantly road based with gravel excursions, with the exception of Mt Patriarch and the Mangatapu, which as most of us know are slightly more technical.
The route could be extended to include Takaka Hill (Harwoods Hole) and Mt Altimarloch, but this would make it around 800km in a day, which getting up around Dusty Butt distances.
Let's throw some ideas around and start finalizing suitable dates/route.

I'd probably need to be on the Sept dates as I might be unavail for the rest of the options. No issues with snow I don't reckon - it's warming up pretty good over here.

I'd probably also ride over early and then leave you after Mt Pat.

Cheers, B

CF does it add too many K's to do the Maunga twice and avoid that truly awful road from St Arnaud to Renwick ? Or even build a raft and do a crossing of the Wairau ? :eek5:

Funny you should mention the Wairau crossing. A year or so ago I did Northbank Rd to the very road end which basically ends up at the river.
The crossing would be do-able for the very brave but only with very low water flow levels, and the depth changes regularly according to how much the river current moves the gravel base around. The real issue is a locked gate down by the bridge where the track exits back onto SH6 near St Arnaud. I need to start asking around at the local farmers houses and make some inquiries, and then do a recon ride.
I like Buggsy's idea of constructing a barge!

I'm interested, can't do Labour weekend (26th October) or Canterburys Public holiday weekend (13-15 November) and may be off to the Magpie Rally (20th - 22nd November) this year.
If what ever is left fits then I'll try attend... Saturdays are best. It's easier for me to take Friday off than Monday, so I would want to get home on Sunday in time for work on Monday.

Nordie, Cooney,ElScooto and myself had a look at a crossing a couple of years ago, as a backup plan for the D.B. At the time it wasn't a goer, but things may have changed.
Exit is at the power house, then follow the road back to the main rd

+1 on that. I was tempted to "roll" up 50m of some discarded wire rope for a flying fox.

Bubbs how long would it take to get it up & running - do it the weekend before the ride or on the day? Were you thinking of making a barge or having a suspended rope
Even if it wasn't part of this ride I reckon it'd be fun to do. I could even get a kayak to get the rope across. Or a bow & arrow..

never done anything as wide as the wairau before. Would def be a weekend affair. Probably accompanied by tents, beer and manly stories around a fire on the South Bank. Will have to spend some time on reconnaisance for best crossing point. Given the width, probably looking at a tethered raft rather than overhead wire. Let's bump this into a new thread once we've done a recce and know it's possible and worth a go.

I did a recon ride today, fuck what a great day on the bike.
All the gravel roads are in primo condition, hard and real fast, great with no dust and good traction.

Dovedale and Jacobs were a little slippery on hard clay base where it's been frosty, otherwise good elsewhere else.
Mt Arthur road is a little corrugated on the steep bits but packed down real well. Real good.
Stopped at the farmers house at the end of Stanley Brook Rd, has a chat about access through paper roads up Berrymans to Spooner Tops, and off I went. Braaaaaap-bloody-braaaaaaap! Needless to say, I'm still fizzing. Fantastic Dakar training ground.:Punk: Looks like they lock the gate at the Spooners access end though, so will need to do more research on that one.
Spooner Top Rd was just as good, then linked back to Wakefield via 88 Valley, Swamp Rd, another gate at Pab Rd (open), and Quail Valley. Bit lumpy after fresh logging, but bloody good fun.

God we're spoiled here, didn't meet another vehicle all day on any of the gravel roads I took.
I'm doing some homework now on access to Beeby's Knob (man, that sounds so gay) at Tophouse, which would be a good alternative to the very unchallenging Mt Robert access road. It's a seasonal 4wd track bit like Porika, but usually opens in December, I'm hoping to get special access earlier, so hope they take bribes.

Okay, sorry fella's, I've gone to sleep on this one with not finalising a date for the ride, I've been a little busy with mini-me and my maintenance on my rental property:mad:

Good thing the ride wasn't this weekend, too much snow around after the last storm front passed through, snow on the Mangatapu, Mt Patriarch, and Mt Arthur ....who would have thought, heavy snow in October.:headbang:

So, after some consideration of the present ride calendar, I've decided NOT to hold it on Labour Weekend, as most of us are prebooked doing other stuff with family, or going away etc.

Oct 17-18 is the 2000 km Grand Challenge for roadie affiliates - so not this one.
Oct 24-25-26 Labour weekend and Greymouth Street Races - not this weekend either. Also Ryan's recon ride south for the 2010 Dusty Butt.
Nov 7-8 is the HBAR for North Islanders, and also U-Sillies Longest Day 1000km'er in the South.
Nov 14-15-16 Canterbury Show Weekend
Nov 26-27-28 Burt Munro festival weekend

Soooooo, I've decided to go with Canterbury Show weekend, SAT 14 NOV

This will give any of the Canterbury lads time to ride up on the Friday, and have a brief get together Fri night before heading off on the ride Sat morn. I don't anticipate starting too early, prob around 7 to 8am depending on rider keen-ness and weather on the day.
If anyone has an idea for a meeting venue Fri night, speak up, and let's throw some ideas around, whether it's a pub or someones house, we'll decide a week or so before the ride.

The event is now on the KB calendar, so register yourself if you're keen.

I went out for another 250km recon ride today, going over some of the roads again to help decide on the final route.

Most gravel roads are in primo condition and the forestry roads are pretty good as well, with the exception of a couple of greasy patches in the trees.
I'm still working on the Beeby's Knob track at St Arnaud, don't know if we can get access before the official summer period starts, but it's worth a crack asking anyway.

Last but not least, the Mangatapu may be in doubt due to recent events, but hopefully it will reopen before mid November. I'm sure we'll be able to suck up another 50km of tarseal to get home if we have to.:weep:

I've just got off the phone from DOC in St Arnaud, and they're being spoil sports about a few miserable motorsickles going up Beeby's track.
They initially said permission would be okay for a couple of hours out of the official season by special arrangement, but as soon as I mention that goddam motorsickle word, they baulked and got all uptight about the possiblity of bikes going off the formed track......like we've never seen 4wd'ers do that!! :crybaby: Us ADV'ers are a responsible bunch aren't we?? Bloody bureacrats. Mutter, mutter, grumble, never mind, back to Plan A.
No chance of crossing the Wairau at the southern end of Northbank Rd at the moment, river flow is way too high....very wet and cold, not good.:cold:
Oh well, gives us a chance to rest up on the bike and clock up some boring road km's before Onamalutu and Mt Patriarch.

I've just been sorting a basic route sheet with distances and main intersection turns on it, so can distribute this to anyone who wants one, on the evening before the ride.
A couple of the forestry roads are mapped on GPS files, but are not on most paper maps, so think it's best to take a "follow the leader" approach to these short sections. They are both on the first leg in the morning before St Arnaud, so figure we can stick together for the morning to the first fuel stop anyway.
I've also got a full GPS route on Garmin Mapsource to download for anyone who's using a GPS on the day. PM me and I will forward the Mapsource file.

I estimate the day should take around 8-10 hours, depending on how much we piss around with fuel/food/photo stops and of course the weather, which may effect the summit of Mt Patriarch as most of us know.

I've planned 3 fuel stops:
1. St Arnaud at around 210 km (the longest leg without a fuel station)
2. Renwick after another 105 km for a splash n'dash before Mt Patriarch.
3. Lastly at Havelock at 175 km after the Renwick/Mt Patriarch loop.

Mechanical/flatties etc are issues to contend with on the day if they happen, so please be prepared with basic tools, tyre levers and a spare tube.
The big bikes will be fine with dual purpose tyres, there's nothing on the route particularly challenging for any of us, who are familiar with each others riding ability.
Personally, I'd like to leave Nelson around 7am, or perhaps meet at Caltex Wakefield at 0730, so to have plenty of daylight at start and finish, and the roads are nice and quiet through the Dovedale/Mt Arthur/forestry sections early in the day.
We can have a quick ride brief the night before if the lads are keen:beer: otherwise a quick ring around should suffice.

Anyones else want to add anything???

Ok, see ya next time Kyle.:bye: Enjoy your day at work there fella!

So looks like we've got 7 confirmed KB'ers, and another 3 ring-ins that I know of. All good and the weather forecast is promising, with some showers on Friday to dampen down the dust. Damn it was dusty last Friday going over Dovedale hill and beyond.

I'm gonna post a basic ride breifing here, I've now gotta work Friday to cover someone's sick leave, so organising a BBQ or pub meeting could be a mission for me to arrange.

Nelson riders will leave from Caltex Bishopdale @ 0700
Mapua/Moutere/ Motueka riders meet @ Wakefield Caltex @ 0730

Ride will depart from here, so please have full tank at Wakefield and be ready to go, this will be last fuel for 170 km

Route Information
The route will be ridden as a “follow the leader” ride for the first 200km to St Arnaud, due to the “Bugger, I’ve taken the wrong turn” nature of some of the forestry roads. GPS route file can be emailed if anyone wants one.

The stage through Stanley Brook is being revised slightly following my Pre Run recon ride last week, so differs slightly from the GPS route file. I haven’t been able to figure out how to join two tracks on the GPS file, hence the follow the leader thing going on!

As most of us are familiar with the latter stages of the route from St Arnaud north, (Wairau Highway to Renwick, then Onamalutu and Mt Patriarch) the group may split up if anyone want to take things a bit more leisurely from there, but would strongly recommend sticking with a ride buddy for general safety or mechanical reasons.

Rider Safety/Disclaimer
Riders are expected to carry everything they need from food and water, first aid gear, tools, spares tube etc. Please dress for the cold, and be able to shed layers if weather is warmer. There is only limited cell phone coverage for some forestry areas, so please stay with at least one rider.
This is NOT an organised ride in the legal sense, with no entry fees.
This ride is simply a bunch of mates following the same route at their own pace along publicly accessible roads. I take no responsibility for any issues be they self inflicted or not, so please ride within your own limits, and enjoy the ride.

Weather: Due to the alpine nature of a couple of the climbs, the weather could play a big trump card if wet. 500km is a long day if you start to get soaked and cold then fatigued, and no one wants to ride off the edge up Mt Patriarch if poor visibility and freezing temperatures prevail.
Without sounding like a big blouse, if the weather forecast takes a real turn for the worse, the ride will be postponed to Sun 15 November. This is a precaution only, a few grey clouds on the horizon will not postpone the event.
Any change will be notified by txt on Fri evening or 0600 on Saturday morn.

Cheers fella’s, see you Sat morn.

Saw the wooden softball bat and thought to myself that after not seeing one of those for years I see one yesterday and today.
Yesterdays one was propping the engine bay up on an MR2 in Richmond that was jacked up and two guys were underneath doing something to the engine. In the middle of the fountain carpark :D

That was a fun ride.
The Avon Gripster is more effective 2-up than solo though.

Yep, only flat at the bottom of the tyre. The tyre goo didn't seem to like 120 kmph plus, started to ooze a bit, but at lower speeds the pressure held fine. Tyre is still holding 22psi parked in the shed.

We opted to miss out the Onamalutu climb on the leg home, but so was still 7 "major" Summits....depending on which ones you decide to count.
Dovedale Saddle, Mt Arthur, Berrymans Ridge, Kings Ridge, Mt Robert, Mt Patriarch, and Mangatapu... but we could count Spooner Tops as well? Who's really counting, good day out anyways.....

Did the GS make it out?.
The occasional consequence of punting totally inappropriate machinery is returning to the scene with a recovery crew. The topos kindly helped with extracting the beast on Sunday - it took almost as long as the entire Saturday's riding.
After a search through adv it seems more likely to be the driveshaft that's packed up. Will find out in due course.
Brilliant day's riding though.

Yes I was thinking it was probably something other than the clutch to let go suddenly like that . Driveshaft seems an easier fix though.
I guess something had to go ,it was certainly getting hammered.

Just glad to hear it was extracted...mahn you were flying on that big beast. Good luck with the fix...
Thanks again for a great day.
