Fucking bastards got me last night...GF and I caging back from d'Auckland, alone on the road, just south of Mercer where the road splits....round the corner, down the hill and there on the side of the expressway hidden in the darkness is a fucking speed camera...which duly when POOF as I passed. Bastards. I was tempted to loop round and go back past at 180, just to give it something to bleat about....'cause according to the speedo I was at around 111km/hr when flashed. ....given the fact that the speedo over-reads about 4%, I was surprised to get pinged...I am sure the entire fabric of the universe was being threatened by such insane flouting of the regulations...:bash:  :Pokey: :finger: :brick: :ar15:

on the side of the expressway hidden in the darkness is a fucking speed camera..Are they allowed to hide a speed camera in car on the side of the road at night? I thought they had to have park lights on.

Anyone heard what happens if you OVERPAY a fine by a small amount? I've heard of guys getting their fine lost in the paper work of refunds etc etc any truth??

If you were actually travelling under 100km/h (allowing for your 4% error) then you might find that you don't get a ticket in the mail.

However, perhaps the error in the speedo was the other way, and you were travelling faster than indicated?
You really need a GPS to verify your speed easily.

damn money collectors, they dont do anything to stop people speeding. hope you dont get anything in the mail.
Next time go over 200 so the cam dont get you, design a car which doesnt bounce back the signal like a stealth bomber, or just keep it under 100

Even allowing for the 4% over-read, I would have been over 100km/hr - prolly around 107 - just NOT over 110...which I would hope to get away with....

The speedo definitely over-reads - at least according to the trailer mounted speed readers they park around the place from time to time. I have checked it on lots of them and it always over-reads. It would be a very rare speedo that under-read these days...

my argument is that velocity per se is not dangerous. Its all about context.

If it flashed, you were enough over the limit to make it flash.

This doesn't however mean you will automatically get a fine.

BUT here's the scam!

This was the case in the UK untilo a few years back.

1. Read Camera Data.
2. Send out fine.
3. Collect Payment.
4. Refund any over payment.
5. Confim Zero penalty balance.
5. Process Penalty Points

This meant that if you got an automatic fine in the post, you could overpay it by a small amount and then never cash the refund.

The net result of this was that you got away with the demerit points.

The last fine I received I overpaid and was sent my entire payment back saying that there were unable to process overpayments.

Anyone tried this in NZ?

You really need a GPS to verify your speed easily.

unfortunately with multpile errors inherent in a GPS system, even that is not as accurate as you would like to think. I frequently see speed error (it is actually the most common error!) and have seen speeds double what I was actually doing logged into my GPS, and treat it as a reference only. To have really accurate GPS you need to link 2 or 3 and lock their information together (this is what happens in to-the-ground aviation approaches) but if relying on a single or 2 GPS (as most aviation installations are) there are substantial leeways for error given.

I'm using a Garmin 495.

demerits are attached regardless of whether you pay or not (you end up being convicted in absentia and the conviction is entered - 60 days after the offence if i remember)

moot point though, as demerits are not added to camera tickets anyway.

Your fine will still be there waiting for payment. Same as they will not accept part payment for fines - probably prior to letting it go to court anyway, so I imagine, that over payment would be affected in this same manner.
