On my home on Friday I came across a trio of young thugs beating up some schoolkids. One was down and taking a heafty kicking
They stopped when I got involved, but the kids did not want me to call the rozzers
But what really makes my blood boil was the way the trio just sauntered off down the street as if nothing had happened. I'm still fuming and wondering what I should have done - we dont need aresholes like that around

Yeah it makes you feel pretty powerless to achieve anything if the victims just accept what happened and the offenders couldn't care less.
In hindsight, do you think you should have called the police anyway?

Yes - The smirk and swagger of the number one perp needs to be re-arranged

Call the cops! But if the beatee won't press charges you are wasting your time!

the victim most likely knew the attackers. what i would have done was given the victim my details so that i could be a witness and tell him to press charges. gives a sense of empowerment that they do it themselves, etc.

Yep, could've gone either way...and kid not wanting to call rozzers could've been so that he didnt have to tell them what he was saying to said "perp" before getting his beans.
Not that I condone kickings, and it sounds bloody good that you got there. When some tosser cant stop himself from putting the boot it when the other guy's on the ground it stops being a scrap and turns into a beating.
As for the kids looking cocky and smarmy, thats just you getting old Jim.

But in this case, No, they were an ugly trio with an ugly attitude

Calling the police would have just given the number one perp more reason to swagger and smirk.

Cell phone photo's might have helped the police!! Who knows - but you did the right thing just by stopping.

"The world is passing through troublous times. The young people of
today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for
parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as
if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is
foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest
and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress." Quote from Peter the hermit A.D 1274

Yes it seems to come around again and again and again
But the current level of violence is particularly worrying
I dont hear Mr Hermit complaining of broad daylight random beatings in the street
But the devil does make work for idle hands
Whats the bet these hoodlums are welfare benficiaries? And the way they are going it will be our taxes supporting them in the comfort of Her Majesty's prisons.
What's really needed is retrospective abortion...

Yeah I hear you, I can't believe the crap that kids get up to, The whole mass beatups filmed on cellphones then posted on the web thing is (I agree) a whole new level of disgustingness. At least when I was a kid a scrap was usually one on one. it's a worry alright.

Maybe you oldies look at it differently because of the whole gansta thing, rather than just groups of mates beating the crap out of other guys

I'm pretty sure it's been no big deal to see people brawling in the street for the last half century or so...

Understand what you are saying but until the 60/70s, street brawls were pretty rare. Unusual enough that they were reported avidly in the newspapers of the day. In fact during my 5 years of stumbling around pubs and parties in Dunedin, there were sod-all fights.
And if there was a fight, it was one on one, and no putting the boot in.

had a similar lot on a street i used to live in, every now and then youd see pushing matches and yelling and other bs, nobody ever got shit kicked out of them thouh. However one day they thort it would be a good idea to throw rocks at my mates missus, completely fucked up her day. How the fuck are you sposed to deal with that shit, was a group of teens who dispersed once she got outa there, no serious damage so the cops probably wouldnt have persued the matter if they had been called (probably should have brought it to thier attention anyway though).
I mean throwing rocks at a woman, some people are just lost causes.

And before that rape and pillage was common sport, War was a pastime. And if you didn't have it in you to kill then you were of little use to anyone, Might as well be a woman.
Funny enough I was shown the court pages out of a South Island news paper dating back about 80 years, There was plenty of charges of public drunkenness, public fighting, lewd behaviour and a couple running murder cases.
And of course theft.
Hope they hanged the bastards.

Hmmm, I find this whole kicking people lying on the ground disturbing. Sure, there were always fights among kids/teens/youths/even young adults. But when I grew up, once your opponent was on the ground the fight was over.
Even muggings seemed to stop once the victim fell. All this boots to the head stuff seems more recent. Maybe I just had a sheltered upbringing...

two things you could have done .. called the cops or given them a crack yourself.
seems the real problem lyes with these kids being allowed to get away with it, Im all for confrontation and exposure now, once I would have done things a little more diplomatic but diplomacy don't seem to do jack shit these days. Some people have become desensitized and just don't care.

One of those really hard kicks that connects with the tail bone and causes the recipient to drop everything because he thinks he has suffered serious internal damage.
