So I'm looking at getting some road tires for the KLX some time and want to know what to go for being a newby to the whole motorbike thing. I currently have Bridgestone Trailwings front and rear. 120/80/18 on the back and 90/90/21 on the front. I had looked at the Bridgestone BT45 but they seem a bit pricey, What are my other option? or maybe even a more road orientated dual purpose tire?
Cheers.

What Trailwings did you have? There are heaps of them.TW41/42 are sticky on the seal, passable on gravel.

MrsJatz has trailwing 302's on her XT, they seem o.k, good mileage, sticky enough and a slightly more knobbly tread than the TW41/42

i got a TW22a as a spare for the rear, if im gonna be doing a bit of time on the seal i swap it with the E-09, the Trail wings not bad on the light offroad and she holds well when pushed on the seal, plus its got that centre line rubber strip so it wears bloody well and maintains its shape.

For a budget priced tyre check out the range of Kenda tyres from Cycletreads website. They all come in under the $100 mark and are good value for money

Whatever you do, stay away from the Kenda K270.
Many companies make a similar pattern tyre without the pitfalls.

I've got a set of BT-45's for occasional road racing & track day idiocy. They work pretty well, I didn't think they were too expensive compared with the very few other 21" road tyres out there, bought em a while back though.
Pirelli MT-90s are probably one of the cheaper road oriented dual purpose tyres out there, I've used a rear which stuck well on the tar.
Cheers

Have been looking at the Pirelli MT90's and they seem good but a set of Kendas is cheaper but not by much. Would I be better off spending the extra $30 on the Pirelli's? What are the pitfalls of Kenda tires?
Thanks for everyones help.

30 dollars aint much to pay for a set of tyres manufactured by one of the premium manufacturers. Not saying they will save your ass one cold wet slick bitumen corner approached slightly fast(over a equivalent duty kenda) but i know who I would bet on..

Me too...
My bike stands up hard on braking and having gone into one particular corner way too hot, I love that feeling of security that comes from knowing I can lean it over and crank it open more.
You wont regret spending the extra

What are the pitfalls of Kenda tires? The Pirelli MT90 A/T is still the best value tyre I've run on the 640A so far. Cheapest $/km of everything, but it is the most road-oriented, the others have all been at least semi-knobblies.
Do some searching on advrider.com for reviews of the Kenda K270. Ppl either love it or hate it. To give you an idea of the grip they have, you can peel into a 65km/h corner on dry grippy tar at 110km/h, and flick of your hips will make the back end step out, a little throttle will hold it out. I reckon I spent more time sideways on that tyre than pointed straight ahead!! Can be fun but I can't recommend it for general use. As mentioned, there are other tyres very similar so there's simply no need to bother with the K270. The IRC GP1 is one tyre that is almost identical but (reportedly) doesn't have the ill-handling.
The Mitas E-07 is next on my all-purpose tyre test list, and I'll get an MT90 A/T for long road trips (partly 'cos I have a matching front). If you are at all thinking about going exploring on some gravel, I'd suggest the E-07 as a good compromise between road & trail.
