Hi all - the Pissed Penguin at Wilsher Bay is coming up on Sept 19th. Who of the adventure riding persuasion is intending to go?
As in past events I can cope with a few bodies here on the Friday night and then plan some sort of devious route to the rally site on Sat morning.

Count me in Bruce. RuralMan is the perfect host & gravel guide for South Otago.

A few of us usually go down to Lawerence & back 'the best way', incl BlackForest / Haka / Dansey's / Dunstan Trail etc, if anyone wants to join us.

We go every year with the Wanaka Motorcycle club guys but I would be keen to do an Adventure run if you can wait for me on the DR650 or if you are roading it I would ride the Hypertard.!

We've been waiting to see what you're up to!

(No need to think about us on the Saturday either - planning to do a run down to Bluff then up through the Catlins...by road...:niceone:)

I'll have to come up with a couple of alternative routes - no point going on the higher gravel roads if theres nothing to look at 'cos its pissing down.
There'll be a couple of 650's with us so you'll be in good company. The big 'tard would be fun on a bit of gravel wouldn't it?

If I can swing the "official opening" of the new sealed road (right next to the rally site) for Sat then I will want to be there for that, but after that a ride down the Catlins would be better than the pub crawl that the organisers put on

Might see you down there somewhere - strongly recommend the Whistling Frog cafe as a stop - about 400m south from the Cathedral Caves turn off.
In fact we like this place so much I would really love to have a KB rally there - so have a look around and see what you think.

Will have a look. Shrek has mentioned before about having the KB rally in that area, so not a bad idea.

I might be interested in a run to the chilly south if I can get a leave pass. Whats the general idea down on Friday back Sunday? Much gravel planned for the Canty based riders (too damn far to travel on seal!).

Yip - Friday down to RuralMan's and usually try to avoid seal. You will know the route - Brothers Track, McKenzie Country, BlackForest, Danseys etc. If Dunstan Trail is still closed then we can hopefully pop over Onslow Rd. However one bit of seal you will enjoy is a squirt through the Catlins on Saturday.
For me the Rally is just an excuse to ride back roads & to see new country. Getting pissed at the Penguin is just a perk!

Sounds good to me. I'm keen to have another look at the Lake Onslow/Dunstan Trail country. I'll work on the leave pass.

Onslow road is also closed between the Lake and the Old Dunstan Trail. I had a look at it yesterday and it made our last winter trip over the Dunstan seem like a bloody easy ride.

Don't forget that the Dansey Pass road has got steel gates on the bridges now and the Council staff just love to close them at every opportunity!

They were closed for the pissed penguin last year and will need to be checked in advance this year.

A local Cocky up there tells me a wheel brace is all that's needed to remove the gate! :shifty: (but, who carries a car wheel brace on a bike?)

The fascist state is whittling away our freedoms, piece by bloody piece!

Yeah I've met the Toddy - I don't think that 950 gets shown any mercy either!!
If you're doing a sealed trip then talk to the Shrek's - think they're going via Bluff with a couple of the ChCh rabble.
Sounds like the official opening of that newly sealed road will be a happening so I need to be there for that, but will probably head down the coast and meet up at the whistling frog as soon as we can get away.

I'm seriously wondering about going down on Friday night and setting up the tent then so we can play all Sat without worrying about having to claim a tent site

Monstaman
21st August 2009, 15:03
Yeah well normally we come down Saturday but I might look at doing the same on Friday night, come through Beamont, Clydevale etc.

Just found out we have a do to go to on Sunday lunch in Wanaka as well which I promised to be at ... me and my big mouth, didn't realize till today it is the same weekend :shit:.

Opening/housewarming and birthday party for a client, just finished a complete fire re-build, as far as we are aware the single biggest residential fire claim in NZ $$ wise.

Anyway, can have my cake and eat it to, just gonna have ta hightail from the site early to accomplish all.

Well I got an email today which I will paste here:

"The date has now been set for the official opening of the new seal for the Ahuriri Flat/Karoro Creek Roads which connect the Owaka Highway to Willsher Bay near Kaka Point.

The date is SATURDAY 19 SEPTEMBER at 1.00 pm to coincide with the motor cycle Penguin Rally. The ribbon will be cut on the road by the Willsher Bay Domain after which there will be a mass drive through of the motor bikes taking part in the rally. The proceedings will then move to the Kaka Point Hall for afternoon tea."

The guts of this is that I certainly want to be there for this opening - but we'll bugger off as soon as its done (which won't take long) and I reckon we'll get to the Whistling Frog about 2pm.
We can do a gravel ride to the site in the morning for those staying here, get the tents up then the road opening......
Hopefully there'll be a few KBrs who fancy a trip down through the Catlins and back rather than the rally ride out which is just a 3 pub pub crawl usually.

Sounds like that bug is doing the rounds down here as well - fell like shit for a week, then suddenly feel great again, followed by sudden relapse 5-7days later - I'm glad you kept your bugs at home. Catch up another time
