Hi. just about to collect me zx10r. only been in NZ 3yrs and never ridden here. looking for some good roads in BOP. from UK originally. Im in Whakatane. dont wanna ride with posers or people wanting to proove anything, just wanna have fun, safely, albeit in a er.....quick manner. interested in going for occasional ride outs at weekends with anyone really.

im really getting into all things technical about riding technique etc so be keen to ride with people that wanna develop their skills, share knoweldge and experience and have a laugh.

looking forward to meeting some biker peeps, guys or girls, i dont care. aaal good.

The best ride out there is the one and only East Cape IMO. If you like corners and tight roads its perfect. The Opotiki-East Cape-Gisborne-Opotiki loop is a classic. Approx 600 kms.

Even roads like the Cheddar Valley and the Matata straights become great on a bike.

Local BOP KBers will know the roads better than me.

Hi mate.. will send you a PM.

For a quick ride, try going out the Matata via Thornton. Turn left at Matata and take Manawahe Road to Rotoma and turn left at the lake to head home again. When you get out on the first real long straight turn left down Braemar Road. At the end turn right onto Caverhill and you are back on the Matata/Edgecumbe highway. The highway into Edgecumbe is boring, so you could either go back along the coast road or have a quick trip into Edgecumbe. Once in Edgecumbe go straight through and turn left at the Dairy Factory onto East Bank Road. You'll pop out at Thornton.

The East Cape is awesome but is an all day trip. There's a heap of riders here who are keen on rides, so just get out there and you'll meet us.

Welcome to an awesome part of the country btw :sunny:

Maybe its time to invest in a radar detector if you are going to live above the limit?

Go and hook up with the guys at Underwoods. Richard and his team organise rides most weekends, be a good way for you to meet some locals as well.

The roads around Whakatane are definitely some of the best plus its only a hop skip and a jump to Taupo for track days.

Daylight savings is just around the corner and the weather should be on the improve by then, well it already has actually just not at the right time of the week for the most part...:(
Evening rides will be all good when daylight savings cranks up.

What a mental week for riding! Rain, rain and more rain... Saw some hardy souls out in Tauranga yesterday. They must've been desperate to ride in that!

manawahei road is dodgy, or maybe im soft. mossy corners down by the lake, blind country corners, narrow road, blind increasing radius turns. wouldnt risk punting a zx10 down that road at any kinda speed. good for a pootle but thats it. fastest way through there would be on a trail bike.

whakatane-taurange-kaimai-tirau-mamaku range-rotorua-rotoma-edgecombe-thornton-whakatane

thats a good loop and shouldnt take ya too long. get some riding buddies and hit that loop. then get into some track days at taupo and the soon to be opened hampton downs

Yep. Moss everywhere on that road. Not one I'd be travelling fast on for sure... And the fences on some of them farms are falling down and sheep regularly run loose on the road.

Braemar Road is a good alternative, and once at Edgecumbe head out to Thornton via East Bank Road ...

you need to ride roads like that which have so many variables. teaches you to read the surface,be smooth, take good lines, look ahead. makes you a better rider.

i think that i might wait until i get a bit more experiance before i hit that road. :weep:You will be fine up there - just don't go thinking you are some MotoGP rider. Relax and enjoy the road and scenery, and play with corners somewhere a little less convoluted.

Braemar and Tahuna road are much better places to kick along a bit and enjoy the sweepers. Tahuna has two really nasty tight corners close together, so watch out for those - particularly nasty coming down - 2km from Te Teko end (Left handers, sudden steep descent, tightening without warning.)
