A few years ago while visiting Nashville, I noticed a lot of people smoking pipes. Pickups with gun racks and teenagers... smoking pipes. I had to get one. Now I'm not a regular smoker but like Cuban cigars and only light up once every couple of weeks but the trouble is I can't find any nice pipe tobacco in NZ.
Any ideas?
Both P's aren't an option either. I'm nutty enough as it is.

I used to smoke a pipe and loved it but I do remember that having the right tobacco could make the difference between a pleasant relaxing introspective smoko or a perfectly horrible hot tarry bubble fest , most unpleasant.
I think you need a specialist tobacconist mate and if you can't find one in your neck of the woods it's gonna be a struggle to find it anywhere in NZ .
I think Jrandom smokes a pipe, he may be able to steer you in the right direction. :sherlock: Clan is probably a good one to start on, it comes in a Tartan packet, smokes well and smells pretty good which certainly helps.
Edit: I just read Sarge's link and I don't recognise any of those Baccys but it did remind me about the church warden pipe, only for use at home because it's about a foot long and trust me you will have an accident of the rammed down your throat variety but if you want a nice cool smoke, they're the jobby.

Indeed he does - while rocking in his chair with a blanket over his knees yelling at the local kids to get off his lawn.....
There's a tobacconist (sp??) - in Victoria Park Market which does pipe tobacco and things.

Go to a tinnie house if you're looking for something to put in your pipe.

He kept that quiet. I feel a pipe session may be in order. Evening jackets and all.

Borkum Riff was available in NZ, a mate of mine used to smoke it a lot - lovely smell and taste (yeah I had a few puffs - but I didn't inhale...)
According to their website http://www.borkumriff.identityportal.se/en/about/anniversary/history/ it says t it's sold in NZ still, so as others have said find yourself a specialist tobacconist.

I enjoy smoking cigars and my Petersen Churchwarden pipe every now and then. I have a few packs of Borkum Riff which are quite enjoyable, though they were brought back from KL for me by my girlfriend rather than purchased here.
I would suggest Havana House (http://www.havanahouse.co.nz/) as a first port of call. I know they used to stock pipe tobacco.

When it comes to tobacco, I'm a pipe n00b; just got my briar, what, a couple months ago? Something like that.
There are some extensive online reviews of various pipe tobaccos. I've only tried Amphora Full Aroma so far. I like it.
The cigar shop on Customs St by the downtown Westfield mall (as linked to by SlashWylde above) has a few pipe tobaccos in stock. Can't recall the brands. I should really pop in and get something else to try.
The main problem with a pipe, I've found, is that not being able to smoke inside really makes it too much hassle to bother with for winter evenings at home. It takes a while to get through a bowl. It's not like just popping out to the back porch for a durry. You need a smoking location where you can sit and relax.
The outside table at Galbraiths is a nice place for it. Particularly with a pint of porter.

New pipes have to be broken in.
The idea is to smoke a new pipe so that the inside bowl becomes carbonised. In general the older the pipe the better it gets.
I had four pipes in vary stages of 'marination.' Each pipe was soaked in a differerent kind of spirit for about six months. With the bowl carbonised the spirit can 'take' into the wood and it is burns you will get a subtle flavour of the alcohole The older the pipe the better it gets.
I soaked mine for about a year then simply changed the bowl
Brandy is by far the most common used or if you want to go over board Cognac is better.
I had one soaked in port that was nice.
As for toabbacco Erinmore was the last one I smoked.

Yes you are. You're at *least* that old. And where were you when we needed you a few months back ?
That's the trouble with old people. Not reliable. :devil2:

The aroma from a nice pipe or quality cigar wafting across the wind is always very tempting and creates a desire to participate! :niceone:
The same goes for a really rich coffee aroma! :bleh:
The trouble is for me, none of them actually like me very much, so I am confined to being a passive appreciator!
Unfortunately booze treats me the same now too! :apint: :oi-grr:
If there really is a God, he is obviously "pissed off with me", big time, damn it! :spanking:.....Still got my.......:ride:.......though! :headbang:
