Moving country!

Ok so now i'm coming up on the prospect that I might be moving country in a year or so. I started to think about all the things I would need to finish before moving day comes, and I thought about my bike! I don't think i can take it with me, and i'm not sure it's worth taking with me even if i could! I'm looking for an upgrade soon anyways...possibly. But here's the situation:

I have a personal loan out on my bike (don't ask me how i got to this point, it's complicated), and it's got some cosmetic damage from sliding along the motorway :mad: But other than that i'v been taking good care of her, her services are regular and ontime by a kawasaki certified mechanic, i'v replaced any broken bits (e.g. the cracked wingmirror and blown bulb) and i still plan to use her for the next year (i'v done 13000K on her). What should i do? If i sell, should i auction on trademe? What ballpark figure should i be looking at selling her at? Is it worth keeping her with my family here for when i come to visit (i'm doing the move across the ditch by the way)?

If any of you had prior experience in this, would be great to hear ur story. Cheers

Agree, its not worthing taking the bike

Fix it up nice and sell it. RetardMe and Kiwibiker would be the best places to start

DONT advertise that you're moving - they'll just use that to string you along and to lower your price

sorry to hear that you're leaving but it sounds like a great opportunity to sell her off and upgrade once you get to aussie (if your licence permits). :)

If you dont have insurance now, and owe money on the bike, go and get insurance!

then theres the small likelehood of having a minor off in the next year and woohoo insurance pays for the repairs - including the damage that was already there...

Sell it, miss. Before you know it you wil be ready for a bigger bike, and having a little 250 back in NZ will just be money tied up for nothing.

Taking a bike to OZ permantly is a pain in the arse - by mandate of the Government that makes all their rules a pain in the arse.

Unless you are taking a container load of posessions, I wouldn't bother because it will be more hassle than it's worth. It's a different story if you are taking all your worldly possessions and it's just another (very large) box in the container!

The price of taking a bike across the ditch is pretty cheap. Whether by plane or sea and there is penty of info on the site. Plenty of folks ship a bike to Oz just to ride around for a few weeks and ship it back.

You're also looking to upgrade pretty soon, so I assume that would be shipping a much more expensive bike.

My thoughts are check the cost of registering in the land of Oz. (assuming across the ditch was not the Mainland)

If the rego process is pretty cheap then it may be cheaper to take the newer bike than to stay 250 and sell before you leave.

You can easily check prices between here and there.

If the bigger bike is new then again which country is cheaper.

What I'm curious about is if the newer bike is much cheaper to buy in Oz and rego there was cheap you could potentially buy it there, ship it here to use till you go then ship it back.

It'd be fun to play with the numbers and see what wins.

And of course if you're sending a container across it'll be cheaper still at a guess.

Have fun deciding. Overall I'd upgrade now if you're ready.

also something else to note that 3rd party is included in the rego fee (which is why it is so f**king expensive)

Oh and don't forget the stamp duty, sales tax and state taxes, they get you every which way over there...

Actually with a quick look at sale prices bikes are much cheaper here.

It seems to me that it's worth checking pricing and compliance in Aus but you may be better off making the upgrade and then taking your bike with you. Interesting stuff I thought.

Or even taking a container load of bikes with you. lol.

Thanks for the reply guys. And I think i'll go for selling my bike when i'm ready. I'm not so sure I wanna go under the process of transfering a bike to ozzie (it was baffeling just reading the post! LOL!), even with a bigger bike. I think i'll just upgrade over there. But until then, i'll stick with my 250 to the end me thinks! cheers again!
