You are actually right.
'Crip' originates from the carrying of a cane or stick. Word spread about the tough-looking young men, who some said carried canes and walked with a limp — cripples, or crips, they were called for short.

My point is that many talk down of the gangs, but dont actually face them, at the end of the day i dont want any kber to be in danger or put in harm of confronting them.

Hahaha ask any cop what happens when you put them in the car and take them to the cells, they are all tough in front of there mates but when they are alone in police custody they just cry.
They aren't tough cowards more like it who pick on the one guy walking alone at night. I have seen them do that plenty of times. When they tried to rob me when i had finished a late shift at work, just got some cash out i told em there was no way in hell they were gonna steal my money, they wouldn't even fight me i was wearing all my gear at the time. All they do is intimidate people but they have no balls at all.
Few years back when i worked grave yard shift at a servo they used to come give me shit didn't take it all they did was walk away swearing at me or back down.
Youth gangs are all the same. Bunch of try hard kids.

3 MM came into the servo I was working at when I was 18 (young and impetuous). 1 came into the shop and was obviously waiting for the rest of the customers to leave, so I knew something was up. Said fuckwit approached the counter and said give me a packet of cigarettes and I won't stab you. Now I knew there was a pretty hefty tyre lever under the counter should things go really bad, and in reality I probably should have complied with his request. But at the back of my mind I thought fuck it, he is more than likely trying to intimidate me, for a packet of durries FFS.
So I said, show me the knife and I will empty the whole cash register and the entire cigarette rack. This upped the ante obviously.
He repeated his threat and I repeated my request.
He then looked perplexed and left the shop.
Score 1 to the skinny white boy.
Another time more recently, I received a noise complaint about MM gang house in Petone - drove down with a colleague to see that speakers in windows blaring onto the street. Several prospects and patched members drinking on footpath, throwing cans into the gutter and intimidating passers by.
We called Police for backup who sent the special tactics group. Real hardcore cops. One of the prospects made a few threats while I was writing out a notice, claiming he would knock us over. The cop asked if he would like him to get the boxing gloves from the station.......I was all keen.
One on one in a fair fight with a prospect.....nice.
Needless to say he shut his mouth after that. What a hero.

Had a invite to meet my stepsister who i hadn't ever met or known. She was in rewa, stayed there for a few days and she kept on making sure i wouldn't wander out onto the streets or talk to any strangers. Met a person my age and he always told me about what had happened to him in his life. And it really got to me that it is a real ghetto. He was thrown on the floor as a baby, mother was psycho threw pots and pans at him, survived in hospital. Stabbed by a rival , three times in the stomach (he has mean scars from that). His dad shot at him with a rifle chasing him down the street when he took his beer at a party, mauled by a gang called JDK (bloods) battered with baseball bats. Knocked up a christian girl becoming a father at only 14 years old, arrested for car theft and all sorts of crimes. I remember walking with him through a park where everything was pitch black, he had a blue bandanna on, about 4 guys come out of bushes threatening to kill me and Steven, he wanted to fight all of them, i was scared shitless and wanted to get out. Things were so close, the fact that he was willing to take on 4 guys with weapons on them in pitch dark shows he is a pretty tough. I told him how i have never heard of anyone who had gone through that, but he said that's how it is, many Maori youth in South Auckland have it the same. If that's not tough then i dont know what is!

If he was really tough he might try and break the mould. Now that would be the hard road would it not ?
Sure there are undoubtedly some tough mofo's but generally they rely on intimidation. How did you escape the park ? Let me guess - the other 4 didn't want to take on a mad mofo ?

What do you mean by 'breaking the mould"
I know at first when you may see them you may think "what a lowlife scum, shoot the bastard" but then when you get to know them, hear their stories. You realise how bad they have it, not that what they are doing is right but it really makes you think -what if i was brought up in his shoes, would i be the man i am today? really think about that aye, the odds of you becoming Deano and having morals you have now are slim in that sense huh.
A few adults ran in and stopped it from going on, they seem to of known most of the youths because its common for street gangs to hang out in parks. Having a sesh, dealing, meeting up, fights etc.

Oh yeah tough guys out there you dont have to be in a gang to prove that. Gangs are mearly a way for them to feel part of something more than what they know.
I know guys that got beat up as kid properly knocked around and they are living very normal lives you could never tell what happend to them.

What do you mean by 'breaking the mould"
I am the first to admit I didn't have anything like the upbringing that you describe with Steven. But I did go through a phase where I could have easily taken the wrong path, and ended up on the wrong side of the law and possibly in jail.
Instead I chose to turn my life around.

Sure it can be harder for some, but real badarses with shit childhoods have turned their lives around. I knew a gang member in his 50's that seemed like an ok guy....to me and a few in my group of friends anyway.... but he had mellowed and was well past his prime.
A few adults ran in and stopped it from going on, they seem to of known most of the youths because its common for street gangs to hang out in parks. Having a sesh, dealing, meeting up, fights etc.
So how do you define 'tough' ? Could he have taken the 4 others out ? Was he stupid enough to try and fight when running would have been more sensible ? Was he relying on the "I'm fucken mad don't take me on approach" ?
Most parents of these 'gangstas' have a lot to answer for. It isn't easy to break the cycle but it isn't impossible.

I would hardly call youth gangs tough for committing petty crime. When i used to buy tineys it was mostly dealt by uni student trying to get abit more cash so they could get written off in the weekend.

A think a good way to help out the troubled youths is to invite them into motorcycling possibly? As slicksta mentioned they want to feel a part of something and find mates in joining gangs, they could feel part of a riding club and have fun meeting new people. What do you say Deano? there are a few people who i know who, if i could somehow get them a bike, take them into a carpark and maybe they might find it fun? Once you get the biking bug you never go back!

Great idea mate - very positive.
It was the discipline involved with kickboxing and tertiary study that turned my life around, so I'm all for it.

Aren't you being a bit selective? You have one experience of a bad guy with a rooted upbringing and Rewa is a bad place. The population of Manurewa is now over 70000. That is bigger than most NZ towns. Amongst that you will get your population of shitbags but statistically Manurewa is much safer than Auckland City or Wanganui. I guess its lot of people and lots of crime.
If you walk through any park in NZ with a gang member wannabe at night looking for trouble you are going to find it.
BTW my mates pad in 'da ghetto' has just sold. He had to knock 200k off 'cos of the tough times but still got 1.2 million for it.

ban all american gang influence rap videos etc and in ten years youth gang will drop 80 percent
hahaha ROFL too funny , 80 percent is a "broad" statistic dont you think, im sure something could be done.
Fucking oath. Let them loose on a gixxer thou and let nature take its course on these oxygen thieves.
Not smart though, if you let them loose on a gsxr 1thou, when they mostlikely have no skills not only will they kill themselves but harm or kill some innocent person. Just put them in a construction site with nails and all sorts lying around on a gsxr 1thou to speed around, with nobody in the vicinity, therefore no one but him to blaim for the "accident".

Tough is the shit that goes on in the poorer parts of Johannesburg, Hillbrow etc. These little 'gangters' would not last a night. They can take their initimidation and fuck right off. I didn't leave one shit hole to come and be bullied by these simian drop kicks.
Yes they are dangerous, but if we all cower down to them they get even more cocky.

twas funny when josh masters made a promise to john campbell and New Zealand over a live interview that as leader or founder of the 'kILLABEEZ" they do not do, sell drugs that he knows nothing about tinnie houses. Few weeks later he's in prison for mass drug charges.........

I laugh at American gangs, how can they be dangerous, they are all malnourished, skinny, dont know how to fight. They are what they are because of guns safely hidden in their cars, just a pull of a trigger and world fears them. What if these Compton Gangstas were in a pub, they need their "gat" to protect them, without it they are a joke.

Heres a little small amount of info (i didnt get this from wiki or any other source, to my knowledge) on the gangs to possibly enlighten or inform you and/or other kbers.
All in South Auckland
kbz- an accronym for "killahbeez" they wear mostly yellow, youths trained in kick boxing.
DMS- Drugs , Money, Sex
2ceez- Crips gang, in huge numbers, all blue wearing caps or t shirts with the logo 2ceez
JDK- Bloods gang rival to crips, wearing all red
BTdubs- Wear shirts with the logo "btw", no specific colour, affiliated with the "killabeez".
187- if you hear or see this tagged it means homicide, as in America the code number for homicide is 187.
If you see chucks thrown over a power poll/line it means you are in gang turf, or a member has died in that street.

Did you know some gang members from America have moved over to New Zealand hence the American gang numbers and codes.
That is why the question still remains -Are born and bred NZ gangs really trying to imitate American gangs or started by USA criminals to gain income in drug trades and import/export illegal goods using predominantly Maori and Polynesians as 'bum boys".

So I'm going with this answer: For people with either no sense of their culture to feel they belong, or no sense of family at home, "gangster" combined with the "cool" reputation it has these days, must have seemed like a pretty good option.

Im no cop either (yet:yes:)........... I hear only recently have American gangs found a future in the drug trades in New Zealand so says a programe called "nz gangs". Using street gangs as their pawn in the game of chest, the asians are using panadol packets and fake prescription pill packets to hide drugs according to a recent study, same have been coming from America. NZ artists like Mrsicc who represents btdubs- a notorious otara street gang- is in America, speculation to consulting with gangs. Same as colourway records prominent gang rappers- who are all "killahbeez"- in America.

The Rockers up top are deployments.. the big one is the Unit Patch
http://ranger95.com/marines/meu/24th_meu_patch.gif
The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is one of three Marine Air/Ground Logistics Task Forces which routinely deploys from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune to the Mediterranean Sea aboard amphibious ready group shipping. The MEU prepares for deployments by participating in a three-phased pre-deployment training program (PTP). The training program culminates with a certification exercise to validate the MEU’ s operational readiness and special operations capability. During training, the MEU is under the operational control of the II Marine Expeditionary Force Commanding General. When embarked aboard ARG shipping, the fleet commander exercises operational control of the MEU.
The 24th MEU’s Command Element (CE) serves as the Headquarters for command and control of the Ground Combat Element (GCE), Aviation Combat Element (ACE), and MEU Service Support Group (MSSG). The CE also consists of detachments from Radio Battalion, Reconnaissance, Counter Intelligence, Interrogator Translator Team, Topographical and Force Imagery Interpretation Units, as well as standard staff sections.
During the 1960’ s and 1970’ s, the current 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit was activated at various times as the 34th Marine Amphibious Unit and participated in exercises and operations in the north Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas. In 1982, it was redesignated the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit and served twice as part of the multinational peacekeeping force in Lebanon. It continued to make routine deployments to the Mediterranean during the next six years while also providing forces for operations in the Arabian Gulf. (nudge nudge)
The Marine Amphibious Unit was redesignated as a Marine Expeditionary Unit in February 1988. Following Operation Desert Storm, the 24 th MEU was tasked with the humanitarian relief effort, “Operation Provide Comfort,” in support of the Kurdish people in Turkey and Northern Iraq. In 1993, the 24 th MEU took part in Operations “Restore Hope” and “Continue Hope” providing humanitarian aid to many remote areas of Somalia in the form of food, water and medicine. From May to June 1994, it served in support of Operations “Provide Promise” and “Deny Flight” in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Two weeks after returning from that deployment, the 24 th MEU redeployed to the waters off the coast of Haiti where it served during July and August as part of Operation “Support Democracy”.
In June 1995, elements of the 24th MEU launched a daring mission from the Adriatic Sea to rescue Air Force Capt. Scott O’Grady, who had been shot down over Bosnia-Herzegovina six days earlier. In 1996, the MEU served as a contingency force in the Adriatic Sea in support of Operation “Decisive Endeavor.” Near the end of October, units from the MEU assisted U.S. Army and allied engineers with the construction of a bridge across the Drina River in Bosnia. During 1998 the MEU was diverted from its regular deployment schedule to provide a forward presence in the Arabian Gulf as the U.S. Fifth Fleet landing force in support of Operation “Desert Thunder.” In addition to using its aviation assets to enforce the Iraqi no-fly zone – Operation “Southern Watch”.
During November and December 1998, Marines from the 24 th MEU were called upon to provide security for the American embassy in Tirana, Albania. In March, the MEU conducted 34 battlefield air interdiction missions as part of the NATO air campaign against Yugoslavia, attacking with its AV-8B Harriers from the Adriatic Sea. Throughout the air campaign, the MEU was poised in the Aegean and Adriatic Seas to support Tactical Recovery of Aircraft and Personnel (TRAP) missions in support of Operation “Allied Force” had U.S. or NATO aircrews required assistance. While in the Aegean, the MEU also participated in humanitarian assistance efforts in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to assist Kosovar refugees with food, water, shelter and medical aid.

I see Sarge still thinks he's Rambo/Hulk Hogan/Optimus Prime/Chuck Norris. What have you been out hunting today Sarge? - militant middle easterns or south auckland gangsta kids?

Tough (allegedly) and funny too (back in the 90s when "mom" jokes faded out)

>>WTF does that badge mean anyway!?!?<<
Point was I used to go to Ologapo City which is a slease pit that 'services' the American Naval Base at Subic Bay. Long story but it was a work stop off. (That's what I told my old man anyway). Lebanon at its worst I can only imagine.
Sarge's current domicile is a 'Garden Suburb' in comparison.

wear the wrong hat or scarf walking through Otara and you won't have to look for shit; it will come running at you
The fuckers haven't given me any grief yet.....I just live over the hill in Whitford but am in Manukau/Manurewa/Mangere etc. all the time. That said, I don't go looking for shit. I am happy for them to nest and ruin their own neighbourhood but if they come looking for trouble in mine...well then it really is all on.

I don't buy that arguement, there is always a choice. It may go against the norm and the grain, but there is always a choice.

Lebanon at its worst I can only imagine.
at one point.. the central square in the center of the city was the most bullet ridden square mile on the planet..constant sniper fire.. car bombs and incoming artillery..we were stationed on low ground, holding the airport...the Israelis wanted it .. so did Hezbollah/ Syria and the Leb Government..
terrorist bombing attacks against U.S. and French armed forces in Beirut on Oct. 23, 1983 that claimed 299 lives. The attacks, which took place amid the sectarian conflict of the extremely damaging Lebanese civil war (1975–90), hastened the removal of the international peacekeeping force from Lebanon in February 1984.
The multinational peacekeeping force, composed of troops from the United States, France, and Italy, arrived in Lebanon in August 1982 as part of a cease-fire agreement signed by Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The troops were to oversee the safe and peaceful withdrawal of Yāsir ʿArafāt and the PLO from positions within Beirut and ensure the safety of the Palestinian civilians that remained behind. The withdrawal of the PLO was accomplished by early September, and the bulk of the multinational force soon withdrew to ships in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. However, the assassination on Sept. 14, 1982, of Lebanese president-elect Bashir Gemayel—the Phalangist leader of the Lebanese Forces, a unified Christian militia—sparked a wave of violence. Christian militiamen retaliated for Gemayel’s death by killing hundreds of Palestinians (estimates range from several hundred to several thousand) at the Ṣabrā and Shātīlā refugee camps. In the wake of the killings, troops were swiftly returned to Lebanon.
The situation seemed to have stabilized by early 1983, and a small group of British peacekeepers joined the existing force in February of that year. On April 18, 1983, the illusion of calm was broken when a car bomb destroyed the U.S. embassy in West Beirut, killing dozens of American foreign service workers and Lebanese civilians. Although the notion of using a car or truck to deliver explosives to a target was not a new one—the Irish Republican Army made extensive use of the technique throughout the “Long War”—the suicide bombing of the U.S. embassy represented a sea change in tactics for militia groups and terrorist organizations in the Middle East.
Israel and Lebanon signed a formal peace agreement the following month that called for the withdrawal of Israeli troops, contingent upon Syria’s withdrawal. Syria opposed the agreement, however, and refused to retreat. In July Israeli troops began a unilateral withdrawal from positions within Lebanon that they had held since June 1982. Fighting between competing militias escalated in the wake of the Israeli withdrawal, and violence against the multinational force increased, with U.S. Marine positions routinely coming under small arms and mortar fire. Circumstances took a crucial turn, however, when U.S. gunships in the Mediterranean shelled Syrian-backed Druze militias in support of the Christian government; the perceived role of the multinational force thus shifted from that of unaligned peacekeepers to active support of a particular faction in the Lebanese civil war.
This was the backdrop when on the morning of Oct. 23, 1983, a dump truck packed with an estimated 12,000 pounds (5,400 kg) of explosives crashed through the front gates of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut. The detonation ripped the four-story building from its foundation, and the barracks imploded in a matter of seconds. The 241 Marines and sailors killed in the explosion represented the largest loss of life in a single day for the Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. Within moments of the attack, a second suicide bomber drove into the barracks of a French paratrooper detachment in West Beirut. The explosion toppled the building, and 58 soldiers inside were killed. Within four months, elements of the multinational force began to withdraw to ships offshore, and on Feb. 26, 1984, the last U.S. Marines left Beirut

Thats a good point. Anyone can turn their life around, but it must be harder for some than others.
E.g....there was a Mobster down this way named 'Triple M', surname 'Ford'. I believe he is deceased. Not however before naming his son 'Customline'....I mean imagine the cops...
"What's your name son ?"
"Customline Ford".
"hahahah, yeah but seriously, what's your real name ?"
Poor cunt never stood a chance really. He is a lowlife gangsta as well.

You get paid while you do it jed? interesting, can you clean my room, mow my lawns (both kind), wipe my but when i finish on the toilet (that requires serious multi tasking). All at a healthy sum of $40 per week, that should be more than you earn at the moment so i suggest you take this generous offer.
Oh and i forgot you will have to tuck me in bed and read me night time stories, but you will have to sleep in my mums bed.

Stupid coconuts couldn't even come up with their own gang names without copying something they was on tv. Monkey see monkey do...
