Motorcyclist in hospital after police chase

Stuff.co.nz Last updated 09:16 06/08/2009

A man described as a gang associate has crashed his motorcycle while being chased for having a fake registration plate made of cardboard.

The 26-year-old suffered moderate injures in the crash in Hamilton yesterday and was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance.

Police say the crash happened shortly after 3pm, near the intersection of Riflerange and Norton roads. The motorcyclist had earlier been stopped at the corner of Tristram and Ward streets in the city.

“The rider was stopped after officers noticed it [the bike] had a cardboard registration plate on it but the rider sped off before police could speak to him,” a police statement released this morning said.

“A pursuit … was initiated with speeds described as moderate. Unknown to officers at the time, the rider was wanted on warrants and is a known gang associate.”

Police say the motorcyclist failed to negotiate an underpass, swerved to avoid an oncoming car, hit a traffic island, fell from the bike and hit a car and van.

The man was arrested and charged with reckless driving. Police allege the man was also in possession of a knife, methamphetamine and cannabis.

The police serious crash unit is investigating and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified of the crash.

Doesn't bother me. How would you prefer them to be described? If the accident involved a car, then they would usually be described as a "motorist".

What irks me most about media coverage of motorcycle accidents is where some twat journalist thinks that revealing the manufacturer of the bike is somehow pertinent to their story. This is particularly true of accidents involving Harleys, where the make the bike is nearly always mentioned. Other favorites are "high-powered sports machine", again seeking to infer that some speed-crazed twat had momentarily lost their mind.

Agree Hitcher, but I suppose technically a GSXR 1000 is a potent speed machine,or any other race replica type sports bike. Then again reporting a motorcyclist seriously injured hasn't the same hit as motorcyclist riding a high powered 1000cc race replica bike was injured etc.

Agree with Hitcher also. Not a fan of formal reporting in the media using colloquialisms etc. Referring to the person as a 'biker' raises negative connotations for the general public. It already bad enough the a gang associate from Hamilton is riding a motorbike full stop

riding a motorbike full stop

Anybody can do that. Riding a motorbike apostrophe is much harder.
