Have you seen Go-pro's web site? Think they have a demo of the two lens...

They only have video of the wide. It doesn't look like 170 degrees though.

mine has the normal (not wide). the wide is more for surfers where you need to focus on a "subject" thats pretty close. if you use the wide on a bike you lose prospective of distance so it wont do your filming justice.

X 2 on that, I've tried both as I had one of the originals and was given the wide angle one to try, but as 325rocket says I found the results were much better with the original.

the idea would be to put the 54 on the front and mount the wide at the back, you would get some good footage

We have the 170 wide after having the 54, no comparison.

Much better footage all round from the 170 except in narrow places where it distorts slightly (i.e. 2 meters or less), much bigger field of vision on the 170.

5 mp is better than 3mp as well, more scope to play with it and get better results.

I know some guys who've used them for pro work and are are pretty satisfied with the results, they certainly think the value for money is good. They use 3 or 4 at a time.
One of the guys that imports them here uses them for drifting videos with good results, he's a bit of a rotorhead, a friend of a friend.

Here is a part of a vid shot on Saturday, mate on his XR650 and me beneath the camera , apart form the downgrade quality on pootube it has come out well, this is our 170 deg wide angle 5 mp camera, full non pixelated res on my 19 inch monitor.

Enjoy

I am trying to decide between cameras.

Narrowed it down to the:
GoPro (http://www.goprocamera.com/)
and the
Tachyon XC (http://www.tachyoninc.com/)

With the tachyon being good for supporting SD cards up to 32GB however possibly being too big which makes the GoPro rather attractive.

Cheers for the comments .. better go stand outside eh!

Check out the wide angle through this section, gives you a very good perspective of what is going on on either side.

Sorry for the missed gear at the beginning and the finger work at the end.

Something to bare in mind, is that the wider lens will cope with vibration/shake better than a closer focused lens. The further away the view point, the smaller any movement will seem comparatively.

When attaching it to a small rattly bouncy motorbike, this would be my main consideration.

Hmmmmm Yeah i actualy like the footage of the wide angle better ..... Seeing more out the sides seems to give a better sence of speed too i reckon. Vibration shouldnt matter too much as the tracks are "fairly" smooth compared to the road. 170º for me i reckon. Im sooooo glad i didnt rush and buy a 54º :sweatdrop.

The wide angle lens makes everything look real far away when fitted looking forward on a bike. The standard lens is best for that use.

i tried to upload a (slow) run over the rimutakas last night but my computer kept freezing, ill have another go tonight.

after seeing the wide footage i think i would rather that. seems a lot clearer then mine although mine does say its a 5mp camera.

As a photographer i'd suggest the std not the wide.
170 degrees is far to wide to be useful on a bike.

with a 170 degree cam you'll need to be 2 metres from the bike in front to get it a good size

anything more than 10 metres away will be a dust spec

close one eye and stare straight ahead: that's about 45mm

It's ok, he is used to that !!! He needs a "bikes in your lens appear to be closer than they are" lens or it's just gonna look bad !!!

Well now im stumped as to what one to get people. I have a small camcorder i may use as a front camera and get a wide angle lens for the rear of the bike ........ Twice as much footage in at the same time. Such a shame the dont have changeable len's for them.

heres a couple from the wide angle lens version. These are using the cam mounted on my helmet with the kit that comes with the camera.

the kit is top notch

as said earlier, if you're following another bike it looks a lot further away.

I've had zero problems with it and have bashed it about a fair bit.
