But my assumption that each variable was a single digit is obviously wrong; my brute force solution based on that gave only one answer, and I'm pretty sure it's not the right one :)

(7) 3c+e=29

d. by (2) c+e must equal less than 15 so two possible solutions for (7)
either (c,e)=(8,5) or (9,2) lets go with (8,5) first.

e. by (6) we know that a=3 and from (2) we get b+d=13. Make d the subject and get
(8) d=13-b

f. substitute (8) into (4) to get
