View Full Version : What is your bike's fuel economy?

I was talking to a biker I met today at the lookout on SH16 on the way to Wellsford. He was riding a mint 1982 Honda CX-500 Turbo (http://powersports.honda.com/the_story/heritage/heritage_milestone.asp?Decade=1980&TargetUrl=Milestone/Milestone_Model_0101.asp&PrevPageTitle=&bhcp=1) and was shocked when I said I only got 15.6km/litre out of my 250. He said he got 20km/litre out of his 500cc, V-twin, shaft driven, turbo charged, considerably older bike (ok, it was admittedly fuel injected, but still).
This got me wondering what mileage (kilometreage?) other people got from their bikes. I dunno if this has been posted before, all I could find was a thread about how far people could get on a tank.

For anyone that hasn't checked this before, all you've gotta do is next time
you gas up, keep the receipt and write down on it the km's you've done since you last filled up. Then just divide the kilometres by how many litres you put in the tank. Provided you filled the tank up the same amount each time, this will be a reasonably accurate measure of how many km per litre your bike does.

[edit: added a poll - you can vote for more than one option]

Um 190kms then res....
I have no idea if that is good..

It's from Porirua to Mangaweka

I can get 24km/l from the 400, down to 18 if I am riding it towards the limiter.
The R65 gets more like 15 or 18km/l (town or touring respectively)

I'm doing about the same. Roughly worked it out to about 17-18km/L

Just reviewed my fule consumption from the Rusty Challenge last year on my Suzuki Volusia. Surprisingly 19.1 kms/ ltr :2thumbsup

I have a 9.5 litre tank... I do 200km approx before hitting reserve.

But quite often it will go between 205 to 212 km before reserve.

Once it did 216km and the lowest amount was 189km before reserve.

So on thoses figures I have no idea.

When she hits reserve the bike gives a few shudders,
so I quickly switch the switch over... and away she goes....

I think she does about 30 odd km on reserve???

I try to fill up when the fuel needle gets to the quarter mark and then reset the trip guage. From my Blackbird, I suppose get about 16Km to a Litre. Thats if I done my maths right.

Yep, I saw that thread, but I was hoping for fuel economy rather than how far people get per tank of gas which is what most people were posting. With km/litre it is easier to compare different bikes.
In the other thread the best fuel economy looks like it was jrandom with his FXR150 at 25km/L.
But I still find it surprising that 250cc bikes get far worse fuel economy than some larger bikes. It means many 250cc bikes aren't good commuters at all if you are looking at it from a fuel economy perspective. And they aren't much good for highway riding/hooning either because they lack the power (well, mine does. zxr250's cbr250's etc do a bit better).

Well lets see I have a 18 litre tank and it costs me (before the tax hike) roughly 17 bucks to fill. Now on that it took me just under $40 to get down to wellington. Now for all you math wizzes out there tell me what the K's per litre is.

My 91 zxr 250c only gets a pathetic 14-15 km/l :(.. meanwhile its getting tuned now after carburation problems where it would not start at all.... hopefully it will increase the efficiency alot.

Interesting that the efficiency of smaller engines is low, rather suprising too i must say.

2nd April 2005, 20:17
My old VT250 would do 300km per tank but I can't remember what capacity the tank was (probably around 12L).

The work Nordie will go 18-20K/L.

The fun Nordie gets 15K/L.

The fun Nordie with a small Givi screen gets 18-19K/L. :ride:

The XR250 gets about 6 months to the tank - must be about 50-60K/L at least.

Think that was more my calculations than me running the bike to death

Pwalo
2nd April 2005, 20:38
I could get 65 to 70 mpg on my older GS. My K1 is about the same. Think that's somewhere around 24-25 kl.

I think that a 500 twin is probably the ideal size for economy. Doesn't need the revs of the smaller fours, and is reasonably light compared to the bigger (non sports) bikes. Still fast enough to see off the cages.

i think my tank is 15l...? (+ reserve, so 18...maybe) but i get 20ks/L. 300ks to a tank. pretty good really. but petrol cost me heaps.i live rurally and its like 137ish for 96 at one station and the other station is about 141 for 96. ive never paid less then $20 for a tank...!!!

I went from, home North of Napier, to Wellington on Thursday last week. One up on the way down with all the leathers for my daughter boots bla bla bla. Picked her up and filled the pack and tank bag with her gear and two up home. I did not go over 140 on the way down and stayed around 120 on the way home. The traffic out of Wellington was unreal and it was lane spitting for a long time but we did a fuel check and it worked out to be
20.78 Km per litre for the hole trip. We ride a 96 GSX-R 750V
I can halve that when out playing with the big bikes so it depends what I am doing.

Don't think it will be this good on the 10th in Taupo.

Yep that sounds spot on. We did an East cape trip a few years ago and took 3 85-86  Gixxers. The most I could get out of mine was 210 km and it was dry. The others were close to that but one only did 200 max. We had to work the fuel out so we didn't get stranded. Made it hard on the touring bikes that had to wait for us to fill up every time we found gas. Think we paid $1.50 for fuel at Hicks Bay. Seemed a lot then but almost normal now :angry2:

Yes its getting a reballance on monday lmao.

revs uses gas.....

so more revs = more gas....

hence the more lazy the engine the lesser the gas.

so a 250 or 400 ish twin makes sense..... or even singles.... thump thump thump thump

And guess what.... revs kills engines too!

Pretty fucken good at the moment, it's been in Deaths garage for a while with half the engine missing. But on the now rare occasions i do ride it, feul ecomony is piss poor, although i have lowered the gearing slightly but it was shit to start with. Dont know many twins with a good feul range?

Worse i had the feul light on at 90km into a full tank at manfeild once, wouldn't want to do that to often. Ah who am i kidding of course i would. On the road i made 35km outta a full tank once, all be it because the remaining petrol leaked out of the gapping holes in the tank after i chucked it down the road at 200kph, wonder what the km/litre/damage/$$$ would've been on that trip. Damn

3rd April 2005, 09:54
The 1100 averages around 16k/l. Best I had was 18.2k/l. Main tank (18lt) gives about 285k range. See, girls, bigger is better.

About 55 miles per gallon - the True and Proper way to measure fuel consumption.

About 19+ km per litre for those who are less educated.

Good enough for about 200+ km before needing a fill.

This is on a 1200cc bike two-up with gear.

10 kms to a litre. My bike is getting new carburator seals, a new air filter and a new fuel filter while it's in the bike shop. So hopefully I will get some more mileage out of it. It will probably need a tune though for much of a difference.

The SV gets about 18 - 19k/l , which is worse than my old FZR250. Sort of surprising considering most of the petrol in the FZR ended up either half burnt on the plugs, or out of the exhaust in the form of black smoke.

Awesome bikes the CX turbs, also came out as a 650cc.... go here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/gallery/?cat=10801&) to see mine.

As far as the fuel thing goes...... the Storm isent the best, mind you it does have the largest carbs the jap's have ever put out on a production bike.
12.5 km/l or approx 35 mpg which is 238km on a 19L tank.

The CB400f2 is pretty good on fuel consumption, provided I'm not ringing its neck.
Give a 2 stroke and forget about fuel consumption, as the only reason for me using one, is to ring its neck... :msn-wink:

18-20kml open road cruising economy is pretty durned good for a 290kg 1300.

Oakie
3rd April 2005, 17:32
The CB400F2 (or is it an CB400SF?) has been getting 17kml but that's mostly 2 up highway riding.
My FXR150 got 32 kml when I first got it and finished up at about 25 kml after some carburetor adjustments and fitting a larger rear tyre (more friction I guess).

I reckon my fuel economy is quite good. I've got a Suzuki GZ250 and a full tank with using the reserve as well gets me 240 Miles (386 Kms). I found out the hard way and ran out of petrol one fine day. I use my bike to commute from Browns Bay to the viaduct everyday, but I also ride like a nana, probably why my fuel consumption is so good. :ride: :2thumbsup

madboy
3rd April 2005, 22:05
A mid-size bike will probably get the best economy, by virtue of the fact that you're not thrashing it to within an inch of its life (ala 250) and it's not a gas guzzling fire breathing beast (ala thou). 250 commuters weren't meant to be ridden quite the same way some people ride them.

My FZR400 did a worst of 187kms on a full tank, incl reserve, and gulped around 15 litres to fill. So what's that - 12.47km/l? I solved that problem by refitting the numberplate, improved my fuel economy no end. When I first got the bike it used to do around 18 to 19km/l, but once I got used to it the economy was down to around the 15/16 mark.

The 636 I've only filled a few times, and I'm still riding it carefully  being my new toy and all - so it's gettin around mid-15s.

I regularly get 24+km/l commuting on my SRX600.(300+ km to tank)
XJR1300 gets 15km/l on trips.(330km to tank)
My old TRX 850 did 22km/l on trips (360km to tank)
I have no idea what my WR450 gets but will do over 100km on a tank of gas then I'm totally buggered and don't want to ride no more.

Giving that most tank's hold 18 litre's of fuel with 3 for resv you just divide your mileage till you hit resv by your liter's Eg 220k by 15 = 14.6666 l per k

Well... I replied to the post at a measly 14.5-15km/L with very conservative commuting and now after getting new carbs installed (thanks Mt Eden cycles) i get a whopping 17.22km/L with thrashing a fair amount :) rather happy to fill up 7.6L after when I would usually be doing 10.3 at my usual top up distance.

Make that a nice 18.72 (I think the new exhaust box is making it run a little leaner), she aint any hotter than normal so I 'think' its okay.
