Just read in the paper:
Muldoon`s Corner work set to begin August 31.

Better get some runs in before that section (Hutt side) turns to shit.
With past experiences the works will probably drag on for months.

Scratch the "months" bit.
Just read further...make that 3 YEARS!!

I'm getting new tyres on Tuesday. They obviously will need scrubbing in.

OMG..! I'm crying into my pint reading this. That'll leave Paekakariki and Blue Mountains as the only twisty hill climbs. (I'm not counting Wainui)

They are only doing 3 corners and widening the road so when they finish it, it shouldn't be too bad. Two of the corners they are doing need it. Things can get a bit tight if you meet a truck coming down just as you reach them.

It's the down time for riding the hill while they are doing the work that will be the pain.

Bridge to bridge times will need to be recalibrated once the works are done.

Nah, we'll just get a whole lot of crap about how big the 'heroes' are.

Even in the car I get feed up with this removing corners to make it "safer". It just makes the trip so damn boring. You would think with the blaming of excessive speed for just about everything known to man that they would be putting more corners in to slow everyone down. Praps in the future they'll zig zag roads to replace straights. You read it here first:yes:

The corners they're reprofiling are the ones where trucks have to swing on to the other side of the road to get around.

Given the propensity for motorcyclists to hug the centre line on the Hill, I would have thought you'd welcome the safety measures undertaken to improve your experience of the Hill.

Doesn't look so bad. Tight corners replaced with fast sweepers.
Just means the average speeding ticket issued for that stretch will rise. Time to place a speed camera there to pay for the roadworks. I should work in the Public Services, self-funding dept.

Someone should open a Cafe at the summit. They would do well from the work crews.

:Oi: If I wanted well thought out and reasonable perspectives on motorcycling and the world I wouldn't be here would I? Piss off and spread your plague of optimism somewhere it's appreciated.:done:

Yeah, whatever on the corners...
The main point I was getting at was the fact of the 3 years of road works that will be going on there.

They are not removing the corners, just improving them. I just hope they do it quickly, preferably in the dead of winter...

I have heard of people breaking their bikes in half, stuffing their bikes under the guardrail, launching off into space and now there is talk of bridge to bridge times... Take care folks.

So what is the current bridge to bridge time? Who claims it? The hill was in all its slendour yesterday, very nice ride up and down...apart from the knob in the orange HSV who was trying to beat all the bikes up there...hahahahahaha..for once I was hoping a Police car might appear but never mind....a great ride none the less...

Theres one there already, just share it with the trains for the cagers, and leave the track to us!

A tunnel would be bad news. The road would fall into disrepair very quickly.

Its gonna make the end of the hutt side more interesting I think. Those last corners are going to become some pretty fast sweepers, with some hard braking into the summit corner.

IMHO the thing the hill really needs is a finish line.

It will be interesting to see how they are going to do it. We were over visiting friends in the Rapa a couple of weeks ago and one of their relatives works for he company successful in securing the work. Apparently there were several clauses / conditions to getting the job around ensuring traffic could flow unimpeded during construction. To this end the company who got the job are going to build temporary conveyor belts over the road to get rid of waste rock / dirt etc instead of the more usual way of loading it into trucks or scrapers and have them crossing or using the road with the inevitable mess and disruption this causes. Should also speed the job up. All this is here-say and third party. Time will tell but it would be good if they did try and look at alternatives and kept the road as clean as possible during construction.

Last time we went over the Rim I had a boy in a tin coffin try and over take us in mid-Mulddons corner :Oi:.

Of course he slid out... its flabby metal butt sliding past my bike... He braked and spun into the on-coming lane... missed both our bikes. Only good bit was watching the other cars braking like shit and ramming into the door of his car :devil2:.

So I don't really mind if they improve that hill. The cars really need it (cos their drivers all suck :mega:) and they not about to go away soon .

Have you driven a heavy vehicle round the corner in question, I don't think so as you would be aware of the dangers. A coach load of other people's lives are at risk every time one is driven round there for fear of meeting a large truck on that corner. People lives are more important than a narrow corner to some of us. There was a picture in the Wairarapa Times Age yesterday of two trucks trying to pass and how traffic was held up. Rather have the corner wider and flowing traffic. Don't judge car drivers by your standards. Yes there are some real idiots out there but there is also the safe drivers.

Nana

1) I'll judge by what ever standards I see fit. :nono:

2) Re-read my post you'll see that I'm in favour fixing the roads to suit the idiots that cause the mayhem, like two stupid truckers trying to pass each other on a road not suited to such an activity. (Can't see "It's the road fault we drive callously in our 20 tonne rigs" being a great arguement for road improvements).

3) who the f--k reads the Wairarapa Times Age anwyay?

4) No bike...??? why no bike..??

nana_mac
12th August 2009, 17:52
There is no bike now to dam old for that but have done a lot of support driving for bikes and 2 son's and a daughter that ride. I agree with you the road needs upgrading, it was just your comments on heavy vehicles as I am a heavy vehicle driver. They should be looking at rail use instead of road. Keep our roads safer.

To a tunnel?

Well - we could put them trucks down it both ways, you see... then we wouldn't have them trucks cuttin' them corners on the hill...all right? then us motorsicklists could partake a little rimutaka in peace (or pieces?) without said fear of oncoming articulated wall.

The trucks add..... atmosphere. I say leave The Hill(TM) alone, just add a big-fuck-off roundabout at the loacation of each of the bridges, therefore making it infinite!
