View Full Version : Classic Bike Wish List.

Voltaire
8th August 2009, 09:52
I went classic in 1986 with the purchase of a r75/5, not classic at the time but I liked the pre 70's styling combined with 70's engineering.
I also bought a Bevel Ducati which at 8 years, twin shocks, air cooled was concidered old.
20 years later I still have them.

Always fancied a Norton Interstate and a 900SS,and a Mk1 lemans,....
Z1r, Moto Morini 3 1/2, Jota......

So....
Whats your classic bike wish list, and why.
Preferabably ones that are actually affordable.....as lists starting with Black Shadow, Brough Superior SS100, Manx Norton and so on have been done to death

Rickman, with engine of my choice...have yet to choose.Wasp - ditto.

I would like a DB Goldstar, several, with lots of bits - so I could have a road race Goldy,an off road Goldy.....a cafe Goldy, and an ADV Goldy.I don't put a Goldstar in as exotic - they were only a pushrod single based on the B31 and B33,with many parts interchangable.

I'd liked an XR1000 - to make into a Streettracker.

An Eldorado - because they are just the coolest looking bike ever built.

A Panhead bobber - because there is classic, and there is Classic.

1,Katana pop-up, not fussed on 750 or 1100 but wire wheels would be essential.
2, Norton Mk3 Commando with as much Dunstall on it as I could get.
3, Moto Morini 500cc the early but pretty (troublesome)one or 450 Ducati in street trim

Plus the bikes I have would be a well rounded collection

I would like another Yamaha XS1100, but a special with a side car attached.
That would give me a good pair.
But for classic?
1984 Harley Davidson 1100L sportster, L = Liberty model in burgandy and slate with gold pinstriping. 4 speed cain drive .evolution motor . Yummy

I had a model 18 project for a while...a 29, sadly I sold it.....

Have only had it a short while and is still spending most of its time on a stand in the garage receiving due care and attention but the couple of spins up and down the driveway have been fun.
Civilianised WD model so a '37 design, rigid rear, girder front, seems slow steering and pot holes will be something to be avoided. Plus the manual advance/retard is something to get used to.
I expect the 18 would be a quicker machine, have seen a magazine review which included a 16H standing quarter run - no time given (guy on stopwatch may have fallen asleep before it got there?) but speed at 440 yds from standing start = 38mph :Punk:

They didn't ever make a wire wheel or 1100 pop up so you'd have to build one

Yeah, I know, but ever since I saw one with wire wheels it kinda stuck in my mind and looked great! Just like the Norton I listed, some imagery you pick up sticks- like the bright yellow Dunstall kitted Commando my mate had many years ago, wanted it then, want it now same as the Katana

In 1980 I could have got the standard street model with 275km on the clock for $1,000.But I don't think I would have kept it for 20 years so it would be worth something.

I would just like all the bikes I sold back - and a garage big enough to hold them....and in income big enough to maintain (and register) them.

The aluminium bike has a GS1000R and the wellington motorcycles Plastic Fantastic started life with the same engines as the GSX's were'nt as quick and was replaced with a GSX1100 later and is still in this configuration. Norris Farrows was always a four valve GSX not sure whether earlier on it had an 1100 motor certainally later on it had the GSX1135 (with the rubber rocker cover gasket) and the other Plastic Fantastic has a GSX1135 motor in it.

Smart choice Mr Beeza :niceone:, the Mk3 is a much sweeter bike than the Mk1&2 and after the Mk3 they just got heavier and slower and more outdated. The Mk3 is my pick for an appreciating Guzzi, buy one now before they get out of (price) range.

The alloy bike (unless there is more than one) is in the showroom of Macs Yamaha in Upper Hutt, and last time I looked it had a GS motor. If the story I've been told is correct, it's not the full Yoshi motor, has standard pistons

You're thinking of Duncan McKee, and yeah, he ran a business in Wellington called Boxer Performance in the '90s. His was the black airhead which was raced with Krauser heads and a host of other trick bits. It went very well. After he binned the racebike, he swapped the Krauser heads and other bits onto his R80 roadbike and developed that bike into a formidable road-legal weapon until he binned that as well . . . .

There was also a white airhead set up along similar lines which raced in Bears quite successfully around the same period. It also had Krauser heads and other equally trick bits, and was built & raced by Sean Kelly. Sean recently (like three weeks ago!) bought the sorry remains of the white bike back and intends to get it back on the track, but without the Krauser heads this time.

Really? Look at the chain run, the engine is in an awkward place. Besides a TT500 would at best cough out high 30s in race trim, which was 10 or so more than std but they didn't like it. A friend has a nicely restored Maico in the US.

It's more how horn it looks than how they went...although they were pretty good for old skool 4 strokes!

Think I've got my hands on a nice RM400N for some vintage moto-x work. I had an RM400C at age 15...rode it to school for fun. Always wanted the 'N' though...one of the prettiest dirt bikes ever built I reckon.

I visited a friend in Chch in the weekend - he had a beautifully restored Triumph 500, two pristine BSAs (a 250, and a Lightning 650) and some pre-unit 650, IIRC, that he was still putting together.
It fired me up about getting something similar, but when I got home, and thought about it, and had a quick gander on TardMe, even the bikes I thought were really kewl in the '70s would be a mission to keep on the road. I'd still like a Ducati one day - I've always loved the older 750s and 900s, but the bike I really lusted after when I was 17 was the 450 single ('Silver Shotgun').

Maybe a modern classic would be the way to go...

Hmmm, maybe back then they stood their Bikes up, Bike on the right , cheered their aggressors with a hoot and a finger in the air ..kicked the Bike alive with the right foot then ...jumped on !

Me thinks not somehow ....hmmm

Believe it or not...I used to start the fucker standing on the left side of it. No matter how I tried...I couldn't train my left leg to start it. I'm a small guy anyway so need to jump on the fuckers to fire them up.

I still have a torn calf muscle sheath thingy from starting a YZ465 and not paying attention. It still gives me trouble 20+ years later...

Worst kickstart accident I've ever seen...a mate of mine had a DR370 engine stuffed into a modified RM250 frame way back when...made it street legal. The mirror was one of those cheap clamp on types...with the thread right through the clamp at the bottom. He kicked the beast...it kicked back. Unfortunately...he had the bars on the right lockstop...and the kickstart lever slammed his knee up into the bottom of the handle bar...the extra threaded bit of the mirror went right through his kneecap and impaled him on it.

Say ouch.

Shit,my XS1 used to start idling when I was trying to find compression.Even had it start just turning on the ign.Don't know why they bothered fitting a kicksart to them,it was the easiest starting big twin I've ever had.

Maybe the fact that I weighed 55 kg had some bearing on the outcome. It once backfired and blew the carbs off.

Bridgestone GTR350, but with some spare GTO pipes & bars so you could swap them over as the mood took you. That T350 on TM atm looks pretty tasty too.
Hi Dave
Agree about the bridgestone, not many know off them.I have 3 myself. 1 allmost restored and two project.

Not too many left after the rego laws changed in the 80s heavily taxing vehicles that no longer had spares being made and people were just thowing them in the harbour. At one stage New Plymouth port was shut down for 3 month clearing a reliable passageway for shipping vehicles past a Hodaka & Bridgestone underwater mountain.

[checks date] Nah I'm 3 days too early. We didn't have any officially imported as far as I'm aware.

I had that happen the other day with Scrap Iron. Parked up, turned the ignition off, then for some reason turned it on again a minute or so later (engine had def stopped turning). It made a burf and started running , gave me a right surprise. I knew old Daimlers and such could start on the switch but hadn't encountered it with a bike before. (it's got an electronic ignition)

can someone suggest where to find info on the Barry Sheene Memorial run at Eastern Creek on the week end. I cant find anything on Mylaps or any logical sites. Pete Lodge ES2 Norton with Sam Smith riding has done a real good job there.

I'm looking at a Honda V45 Sabre VF 750 S, at the moment, any one owned one?, good points bad points things to watch for, yep it is 27 yrs old, but its reasonably tidy for a shead sitter, I know I will be up for new tyres, fork seals, break pads, possibly rear shock, service, carbs clean and tune up.

That sir is a very scary bike , they go round corners in a straight line and go in a straight line like they are in a chicane.

Add to your list of mods .... weld the floppy bits up.

When I was much younger I had a candy apple red GSX400F Katana, (an 82 I think). I loved that bike. It may not be much of a classic to many of you , but to me it always will be.
Also a Yamaha XS650, in a Cafe Racer style, hmmmm.
Oh, and a Triton that looks like this:
