Depends what you call normal?

*Looks around at Christchurch crowd* :killingme

Haven't done the straight to picton thing for quite a while, but if memory serves me correctly it's about 4-5 hours. Although boring as shit, almost as bad as the ChCh to Timaru direct route.

There are lots of back roads though, if you want to enjoy your journey, rather that get there as quick as. Dangerous, Gav, Kickaha, etc, can give heaps of advice as to the routes that will make the journey worth it.

4 or 5 hours non stop.... which means if you want a break every fuel stop then assume a whole day.... and pray for no rain or wind

Its about 330-340km so assume about 3.5hrs running time averaging close to 100 and watching out for cops when you are going a bit over to keep your average up. Stops for tucker or anything else are on top of this. It is a nice easy road on a bike. Obviously best done out of times of busy traffic such as school holidays. I used to like driving the road when I lived in ChCh on quiet nights when the road was lit up well by my car lights and no one else was around. Didn't do it so often on the bike but it it easier to go faster on the bike, hence the word about looking out for cops.

4 - 5 hours mentioned above is that on a 50cc or something as it won't take that long unless you include the stops. I am sure R1AaronKDX could do it in 2 hrs something when no one was looking.

It was 3hrs 25mins in my Hillman Hunter in 1974 before the road was as straight as it is now with max speed of about 125km/hr. Cut that back to 110max like the cops look at you for, plus the shorter straighter road I still reckon 3.5hrs travelling time and staying close to legal.

My last ride northwards on that road on the VFR we left Tekapo in the morning and still got to Picton in the afternoon so no way is ChCh to Picton an all day ride unless you do take all the back roads.

right...so I should look at about 4hrs including one fuel stop/piss stop.
as the tl does about 180-200km a tank....where is half way? well half way that has gas station...?

I got a puncture off the ferry one night and had to overnight in Picton. Got it fixed and left at 09:30and was on base at Wigram at 12:30 in a freshly ironed uniform. Headers on the black 4:1 went white 1/2 way to the collector and the tailpipe was white up to the muffler.

Well I do remember suggesting it,but I'll let you claim credit for it

Depends what way you go NC30 you can turn off and go through the Buller and carry on across to the coast or turn off at Inangahua Junction and go down through Reefton, just checked the map and it says 392km probably taking the second route I said about

Yeah winter on the coast can be quite nice as a lot of the rain falls at night. Quickest way down there would be I'm guessing via Wairau Valley to Murchison then probably to Springs Junction, Reefton, Greymouth then Hokitika. It would be just under 400kms so 4-5 hours should be easy, plus gas/relief stops.

Why I asked about which route as there are choices like going down to Canterbury and then over Arthur's Pass, or down from Murchison do the full length of the Buller Gorge almost to Westport and then do the coast route down to Greymouth, or take the the next road in from Inangahua down to Reefton then on to Gremouth.

Lynda might pipe up here as she has just been down south for 3 weeks touring, so NC30 your choice of route would depend on whether you are touring for fun or wanting to get to Hoki asap - Lynda's ride was about touring for fun.

Hokitika?..nice wee place really. It's hard to beat the coast on a nice day.

The ride to the coast in winter can be shit! VERY :cold: cold/ice/grit through Kawatiri. Can snow round St Arnaud.
I'd ride it if I had too, but not by choice in the winter.

Not sure, I don't ride it very often. But have done ChCh to Blenhiem in 2hr 15minutes on the 12, but was very lucky I didn't see a cop.

Add another 15 minutes or so to Picton .

Riding at legal (or close to it) speeds would be the wise thing to do on this route as it is common to see the Pohleese man.

When riding to Chch from Picton which is done regularly, if I am riding with the Mrs I allow 4 hrs of riding time, therefore averaging 80km/hr  . There is a fuelstop for both the bike and me in Kaikoura generally too. 3 to 3 1/2 hrs is a much more enjoyable ride, but not really my Mrs' thing.

NC30 chick. If you are going to haul arse from here to the West Coast in winter good luck. :2thumbsup The amount of grit used on roads down here could sink 50 battleships. Even in daytime you can come up on it pretty quick and it takes a lot of fun outta the riding. Best to do it before the end of April if you wanna hard out knee draggin trip. Otherwise more than the knee can end up draggin!

I used to do things like that- then one day I was driving through the Lewis in winter with the wife in the car, all 4 wheels drifting in the frost grit, and the little voices in my head started asking questions:
"What happens if you fuck it up?"
"Fuck off, I know what I'm doing!"
"True, but every one makes mistakes, don't they? What would happen if you lost it and slid into that bank?"
Looked across at the wife and realised that I had no right to be risking her life.
Bloody little voices! Ruin all my fun they do...

It took me 4 and 1/2 hours from Akaroa to Picton. But I got lost getting out of Christchurch and it Pissed with rain all the way. Kaikoura coast road very slippery. On the TRX filled up at Christchurch and that was it till I got home. I can add at least 1/2 hr to the same journey with mates - much faster by myself - legal but relentless. Stopping at Kekerengu for a feed adds an hour. And when VTR1000's run out of gas short of Seddon add another 1/2 hour

Is this just on the road across to the West Coast or all South Island roads?

I'm planning a mid-winter trip south and was considering a West Coast diversion if possible (I haven't tavelled the Lewis Pass). Was also considering using the inland route from picton to Christchurch depending on the timing of the ferry I use.

Maybe I should just keep it simple?

Any SI road in a shady spot I'm afraid. In some places they pile it on so thick that where it gathers bewteen the cage wheeltracks you can actually see that it's higher than the rest of the road. I personally find it bloody weird having to take the same lines as a car...
As long as you don't leave it too late in the winter you should be fine, but last year a biker mate of mine from Nelson reckoned it was very, very bad up that way.
The West Coast is warmer than the east in Winter, so ice shouldn't be such an issue.

I have ridden the Christchurch to Picton section on many occassions. Its 340 km so if you can average 100 kph (120 cruise speed) it would take you just under 3 1/2 hours. I have done it in under 3 hours at a nice fast clip, early morning, mid summer, and almost no traffic. Usually I allow 4 hours which includes fuel and comfort stops.

At times I reckoned my steering wheel was twirling faster the my road wheels, talk about icy - my arse (in defferance to Mr H) just about sucked the button off the drivers seat!!
