Creeping Death
9th August 2009, 16:59
I read in another forum that WSB is coming back to NZ early next year to be run in tandem with the V8's.Probably after the Phillip Island round in Feburary at the Hampton Downs circut.Anyone confirm?I'd like to start planning a trip up there if it's true.
TIA.

I wish this were true, but I think it's nothing but hot air from what I've heard.

I will happily be proved wrong though!

MNZ and Hampton Downs have to do "stuff" I guess.

Apparently it's been confirmed for 3 years from 2010.Can't find SFA info!

If Feb/March is the date, dose'nt leave much time to organise/promote a World type sports event!

Thanx mate, but I thought Hampton Downs was in Auckland? And the last time we had WSB was in 1990 at Manfield not 1992 as that article states?

I may be wrong on both counts though...

Lmao!Seems I am wrong on both counts...almost...Hampton Downs,North Waikato & South Auckland gives me half a point lol!

1990 was wrong, that's the round I attended, not the last time we hosted.

Ah well,shit happens!:wari:

I may be wrong on both counts though...Hampton Downs is just as close to Auckland as it is to Hamilton. It is still in the Waikato.

And 1992 Manfield:

Yeah mate,I know it's around 6 months away but I'd like some kind of confirmation of dates so I can get some stuff sorted.

Am heading to Oz in December for 2 weeks and just wanna know if I should spend as much as I've budgeted for or keep a bit in the bank.

My understanding is that the 2010 application to Dorna has been removed and they are re-applying for the 2011 series as it is too close to get everything ready in time for 2010. They want everything right and not rushed.
They will be pushing to have the event at Hampton Downs the week after it is held at Phillip Island which is traditionally in early March.

Tell me what the financuall benefit is to any one , by running it in our tiny little nation, I cannot see a marketable reason to have it here, that is all.

Could the same be said for the A1 Gp, and thats just boring:mellow:

Marketable reason?................how about raising the awareness of bike racing in NZ. That alone has to be worth something.
Financial benefit?..................how much money does the V8's in Hammie bring in for the district.

Look at the Junior MX thats on this weekend, its been dragged away from Europe and will raise the level of MX in NZ for sure.

To host such an event doesn't Dorna charge some huge sum of coin just for the rights to hold it? I'm sure I read that somewhere and it would be an amount in the late 6 figures. Could be mistaken for Moto GP too.

I would like to believe it will happen but cant help but be a little sceptical.

Get a wordsmith on the job and put some positive spin on it for Tourism NZ... the country has some awesome riding to be done and I'm sure opening the eyes of motorcycling world to our little nation would be worth the money, even if the government chipped in... then all those speeding tickets would have been worth it!

AS some one above posted, where is the 3-4 million going to to come from Racingoldfart? , mmmm, NOT television mate, television has to be PAID to be there, hense the outlay to secure the event, What industry in New Zealand would spend 4 MILL to get itself on TV world wide for a few hours?

Re Hamilton and V8 it does NOT cost anything like the amount to run a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, and the crowd attendence at the cars, WILL and DOES piss all over bike crowds, even WSB, look at 1988-1990 crowd attendence at Manfeild, ba haha.

Having dribbled on enough, there is NO WAY on earth, any company is going to outlay the money in the first place to secure it, untill the current management and so called track has been prooven, ( Yea it has started) there has been way to many financuall parties that have cut and run over the last 2 years with that project as it is, so there is not a lot of security, comfort. Gaurantees, for investors to look at it seriously at the moment anyway.

Look at Taupo, same shite happened there with the investors, and then it was picked up and completed, BUT, dam, it is falling apart already, and it is NOT on a swamp???

Yea yea, they left it covered in product for 6 or so months, but how many centries has the SWAMP been there and moving around like a big belly, Trust me, i trully hope it happens, but believe there is a hick up around the corner with that place big time.

Sorry to be so pesimistic

You still need 3 - 4 million (US Dollars that is, sorry for not being clear on that.) to even start the negotiation (bidding) process. Any one got that sitting around???? Tourism NZ will not front with it, neither will the Government. A1GP will be lost for the same reason.

What if we (NZ) enter a team in it called the All Blacks M/C Team, or the Americas Cup M/C Team - Tourism NZ would be as keen as mustard!! :woohoo::yes::shutup:

As much as I would love WSB in NZ like most other KBers, Shaun's post is right on the money. Have a read of all the threads about the Sky tv delayed coverage of Moto GP and WSB, it's the same problem. Bike racing in NZ is a minority sport.

I am looking forward to being part of the Taupo end of year weekend event. That is great motorcycle racing in NZ :woohoo:

The cost of WSB is no where near the dollars that are being thrown around on here. I don't know where that number came from but it is way over the top. Even MotoGP is cheaper than that.
The WSB proposal did not go ahead for 2010 due to the facilities not being ready in time. Everything else was in place and the guys behind it are businessmen who know what they are doing and not a bunch of blokes who have suddenly decided it would be great to have WSB in NZ.
The numbers add up and they are now pushing hard for 2011. The biggest thing going against NZ is the fact that the race will be held in the middle of the night european time and that is their target audience. Apparently they wont get out of bed for a few races a year when we have to get up for nearly all of them.
I am close to the guys who are doing this so my source is pretty good.

As it is so important to you Shaun, my name is Darren Sweetman and I run Hampton Downs Ride Days and the California Superbike School that will be held at Hampton Downs.
I meet with the track management and it's owners every couple of weeks or so. I hope that this is good enough for you.

I think it is just a dream. We are just not into paying big admission $s. A day ticket to the Phillip Island Motogp is A$90 general area on race day and a three day grandstand seat around A$260. Value for money for us guys that like the racing but would Joe Public pay it? should also add the question of attendance. Motogp in australia around 48K Motogp in Europe is 100K+ It just goes to show how much harder it is for us to see priemer class racing.

Shaun's right it'll never come!

Why?

Cause instead of doing our best as a motorcycle community to get it here (ie, saying we will support, tell all our friends, weather or not we believe it will get here), we'd rather just be a bunch of negative nelly's and basicaly give up!

I hope it comes and I'll be sure to tell every fooker I know to get their ass there!!!!!
