View Full Version : I crashed my bike.... a little bit

Well it's taken 41220km, but I finaly dropped the bike.

Went into a corner to fast, did the stupid thing of slamming on the brakes, instead of just leaning it over and ended up hitting a dirt bank at low(ish) speed.

The bank stopped the bike, but then due to the angle I was on, down she (the bike) went.
Only damage was a bashed wing mirror (the glass popped out in one piece and was able to be put back in no problems) and a small scrape on exhort and one bar end.

On the plus side, I’m fine and have learnt a lesion.

"I crashed my bike.... a little bit " sounds about right.

Whatever you did wrong, your recovery was pretty good.

This must be the cheapest lesson on KB.

Well done.

Well done!

I've been riding my GT250 since October last year, and am just waiting for the inevitable. I suppose I'm not so much worried about my skills - it's more that you can't tell what's on the surface or around the corner (added to the comments I've read about the Shinkos).

I would have thought 41k was a good innings. Glad you're not hurt.

The inevitable doesn't have to happen.

When the bike hits something bad on the road, hold your line and the chances are that you'll recover. Try and fight it and down you will go.

Just take it easy in the wet and you'll be fine.

And 'YES' 41k is a pretty good innings.

Glad to hear that both you and the bike seem to have fared pretty well. As long as you learn from the experience and don't repeat it then all will be well.

Was the dirt bank hurt?
It has a nice scar, and also a bit of petrol from my carb will stop anything from growing there for a while. (must have lost a few $$ worth while the bike was having it's rest)

The other thing that may have contributed, was I had felt the bike was a little gluggy in the corners during my ride and as such I wasn't as confident as I should have been.
This morning when I checked the air the rear tire was 10psi lower than it should have been :(

Yep, one thing I hate are tight corners when going up or hill or obscured and usualy on roads that aint well sign posted.

There is no such thing as the "inevitable". The way that you have to ride is by constantly thinking "what if?" and being prepared to adjust your riding accordingly. There is only one thing that is in charge of whether or not you come off - and that is you. Not the road surface, things on the road, or other road users, but you. Very rarely does someone come off a bike when they are not at fault whatsoever.

For gawd sakes man, change the tyres. They are not something that should be compromised on. I tried to get the most out of my shinkos and ended up writing my bike off from trying to brake too hard in the wet. My own fault, but better tyres would have at least helped matters.

You were lucky, not everyone that makes a mistake gets the opportunity to learn from it. The important thing is that you learn and the chances of it happening again are reduced. Coming into a corner too hot would be responsible for a huge percentage of single vehicle motorcycle crashes - practise 'slow in, fast out'.

It is good that both you and the bike are OK.

I'll add to that, I lost the shinkos on my bike years ago, and noticed an immediate improvement, esp in the wet. Currently running a Pirelli Sport Demon on the rear and an IRC on the front (yes,I know it should be matched, but I couldn't afford to replace them both at the same time)

Wow, that was a fine example of what could have been a really hard lesson being a comparatively easy one. Glad that damage to bike was negligible, and it appears you are unscathed. I only wish my mirrors popped out like that and could be popped back in so easily!!! (but I really can't see me changing my bandit for a hyo).

p.s. hope it was a "lesson" you learnt, and not a "lesion" you "earned" <_<

Try riding a Firestorm with Shinko plastic tyre on the front :weep: Mentaly shitting myself on tight corners on bad road service with moss growing on parts on the middle of the road.

that sucks, 2 weeks ago i droped it 3 times, once putting stand down into grass, second lifting it up to quick and over to other side, and third time once again back over to side with stand, so i just left it :D
