My internet connection is real slow. Impossible to watch any youtube files during the download.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/538923608.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

It was two to three times this when first connected. I have had TelstraClear at my door trying to sell me their cable service. Should I make the switch?

Yup...... not a bad night tonight either, only disconnecting every so often.
I have been very tempted to go and rip the exchange out of the ground so it gets up graded and we get broadband, but the neighbors would prolly take a pretty dim view of that though

Upload is slower than download because you don't need a fast upload. All you need to do is send packet acknowledgements (sliding window)

I'm just on the cheapie 4mbit/s 5Mb per month totally clueless... I mean telstra clear plan.

What about when you're on Skype does the upload speed help the person on the other end get a better service from you and what about uploading photos?

That's not why. It's because they don't want a decent transfer rate if you're using using peer-to-peer filesharing software etc.

A test this morning shows a much higher speed.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/539429507.png (http://www.speedtest.net) I guess the reason for the difference is network load. So is this an issue with how the ISP manages the network?

p.dath

Other things that can cause a big variance on speed is faulty devices on the same phone line.

Try unplugging everything from the phone line that the ADSL circuit is on, except for the ADSL modem of course, and see if that changes your download performance.

Sometimes the copper line insulation can break down allowing in moisture. Moisture kills the signal. Was it perhaps raining when you got a poor result, and it is dryer when you got a better result (can take several days to dry out though).

id say run spybot, updated, if that fails reset your modem,
if that fails run windows in safe mode with networking,

if that fails, goto startmenu --> run type iexplore

type "1.1.1.1" if prompted for username and password type in "admin and admin"

this will bring u to your modem page, search the tabs for a line statistics or connection statistics, and check your line speed, etc etc,

if 1.1.1.1 doesnt work,

goto my network, show connections, right click lan--> properties,
on first tab scroll down to internet protocol tcp/ip or something like that

double click, or highlight and click properties, make sure its all set to auto,

if its not get the ip, and type that in internet explorer.

good luck

For those of you getting REALLY low speeds, unplug everything plugged into a phoneline in your house, phones, faxes, sky boxes, alarm systems, etc etc.. EVERYTHING, then reset your modem, then redo the speed test. If it gets faster, then you need to get filters for your other stuffs. The sky box is a common one people dont think about.

I get crap, and only in the last year has it raised to an okish level of crap. Spent about 3 years arguing with telecom, and finally got my entire 5km no exit road broadband around 2006!!!! And that was downloading at 0.2Mb/s if we were lucky, argued with them again that they were somehow breaking consumer rights and that there was no way that was the max speed, I mean... I'm out of the way, but not THAT out of the way. Then they did something and all of a sudden I'm up to 1.8Mb/s download (only about a year ago). Way better than before, but not that useful either. Still can't play online games without lag but at least I don't have to wait 10mins to watch a 1 minute youtube clip any more. It loads faster than it plays, what a miracle... for low bitrate videos that is.
