Well, manslaughter anyway.
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/2752949/No-jail-terms-for-exorcism-manslaughter-culprits
tl;dr - Family in Wainui who killed their niece during a "mataku", found guilty of manslaughter, get 300 hours community service. Yeah, eight weeks litter picking for manslaughter. How long would I get?

Disgusting.
If a dog had done that, the dog would be put down so it couldn't do it again.
Except a dog can't pour water, cos they don't have thumbs.

Apparently this is the first reported time that anybody has died as a consequence of waterboarding.
It must have been a really stubborn demon.

I remember a post was put up not so long ago with a video showing native Africans brutally beating and burning several people who were accused of being witches.
Many people said they were barbaric and were shocked this sort of thing still goes on.
Just gotta look in your own neighbourhood I guess...
I'm truely shocked at what they did, ignoring their sentence which was just bollocks. They picked at her eyes for god's sake.

Now I'm about the furthest thing you can get to a Sensible Sentencing/David Garrett fanboi... but that verdict sucks.
"all five were to have counselling or assessment for any treatment they might need to address on going issues resulting from the death." WTF? Hope that is just bad journalism.
"Justice Simon France today told the siblings that their understanding and knowledge of their culture was not complete." Yeah, I'd say.

Meh. It's recognition of Darwin's Law in effect. They wiped out their own family.
Horrible sentencing though. I'm astounded if that's true that the judge commented that them having a different culture would be a mitigating factor in sentencing. That's a clear breach of the Treaty of Waitangi, in which signatories became subject to the laws of this country.

Just another day in NZ eh sad reality of criminals being treated as victims, while there is prison space for the guy who does the odd recreational drug

Is what they did really much more barbaric than all the people that believe I'm going to burn in a fiery hell forever?
At least it's after I die I suppose.

So the 'dunking' test for 'witches' wouldn't be worthy of a jail sentence either ?
The mind boggles.

"He accepted they had not realised the danger of what they were doing..."
Are you fucking kidding me? The people who did this were in their 40's and 50's. I'm sure you've learnt by then that even the smallest amount of water can result in drowning.

Yet another sad day for "justice" in NZ. I wonder if this stuff gets reported overseas...embarassing, really. People will think we are running around in grass skirts with bones in our noses and maybe a bit of cannabilism, too.
I know this sounds redneck, but FFS
Off topic (kinda), but did anyone else see the photo of the rabbis flying over Israel and blowing into rams' horns to try and stop the spread of swine flu?!? Every religious belief seems pretty laughable if you are not a believer.
