Looking at buying a 95 KX125, what do I need to look for in general when inspecting? I am a newbie to off-roaders and 2-strokers...

Cheers.

Start with the normal stuff. Fork seals,Tyres, chain n sprockets, rear shock operation. wheel bearings, head bearings. brake disk wear brake pads.
Engine wise make sure it starts easily and sounds crisp.
Anybody SAYING engine work was done --ignore it unless supported by receipts.

First thing i do when looking at a bike is walk straight up and touch the engine if its cold GOOD

Then ask them to start it.............take note on how hard and what technique used

Then the normal stuff one member from here said to ask to see what they used to wash the air filter with if they couldnt produce anything walk away

Haven't heard anything strikingly bad about the '95 model. To give you an idea on costs I paid $2000 for my 2000 model last summer and it had a new piston and rings, a spare expansion chamber and shorty muffler came with it. I spent around $60 to replace the front fork seals and another $200 for a complete '97 rolling frame for parts. From this roller I used the rear disc rotor and the rear wheel which I found stronger than the newer rounded rim design.

have a look at the pegs. on inspection should be slightly upward or level- if not and they are slightly downward facing the chances are its been pounded harder than a brothel mattress

What's too much smoke from a 2 stroker?

I went and checked the bike out and it seemed ok but smoked a bit (sorry can't be more descriptive) on idle as well as on throttle, started first crack from cold, no receipts for fixed things but he did the work himself etc etc... Prob need an expert to check I guess...

All two strokes will smoke from cold, once warmed up and given a good thrash through the gears it should be at a minimum if at all.

All the above tips are good ones but as with all old two strokes a good check of condition will tell the story of how the owner has maintained things.
Don't be to hung up on the condition of plastics/paint etc but as per frosty's post if all those things he has mentioned have been maintained then its had a good previous owner.
You pays your money and take your chances with two strokes.
