Stuffing chicken wire in the can to dampen the noise? (to pass a warrant obviously)
Anyone have any experience with this?
Have heard conflicting reports

That muffler would fail a WOF on looks alone.

No self respecting mechanic will fall for it
I used that method on my open-can XR 350 G in the 80's, passed 1 failed 1 even back then.

Yes it will shut it up, however as Katman said if the WOF chap looks up the end you'll be stuffed.
I suggest you get crafty and actually pop a chicken up there as well. Then you could bribe him/her with a nice roast drumstick. If you are really on-to-it lay some frozen french fries on top of the cylinder head before heading to the WOF centre to add to the meal.
What you need is a tube that restricts the outlet end - search google images for 'db killer' to get an idea how to make one.

That's not what Katman said, he said he loved the look of it. Of course he would be able to custom build a better one for $245
lmfao!! at a whole chicken. Would need to be a rather small bantam :bleh:

Mmmmm, that's not a bad idea
Can only failed by 2 Db so not much to dampen :niceone:

I have tryed it.. chicken wire blows out after a while.
works ok for a WOF though.
think AlanB has got the right idea.
stuff a stuffed chicken up it.

don't know about the wire, but stuff a whole chicken and it will muffle the sound... but you may get a clucking sound

Hey Bob,
These are really good and easy to make:

No. It did not stop me getting my first ever ticket, 'Operating a noisy vehicle'. The cop reckoned he could hear me 200 metres away with his window up ... and I was approaching from behind him.
Perhaps I needed more chicken wire? I dunno. After the ticket I went and bought some baffles for it.

Never had a ticket, been around plenty of cops in town & on the open road with no probs, it's only 2 Db over, just need to dampen it slightly for the warrant then remove

So would a stuffed chicken be better than a "empty one"? I'd recommend the sage stuffing mmmmmm.
If a chicken was too big then an egg may fit.....
Just chicken mesh does bugger all if you just stuff it up the hole. If you pull the can apart, and using mesh make a tube, and then, not too tightly, wrap it with glass fibre or such like. Wrap wire around the glass fibre to hold the whole thing together and reassemble.
If your only 2db over that should be enough.

Does it quieten?Yes from what I've heard with a dirty big bore on a car,the mesh managed to muffle(pardon pun)the noise, used larger rabbitt mesh, and rolled into ball about 200mm long, stuck in muffler. On a bike WHY lol,as long as under 100db is fine?

Mmm, hoping for something as simple as "stuffing chicken wire in there, getting the warrant, then pulling it back out again"
ps: sorry Katman, have you on ignore, there's only so much dribble one can endure :msn-wink:

Yeah, on a previous 4 into 1 on a GS million it was just TOO LOUD, so I tried stuffing some mesh up the hole, it made no real difference. Then I did the pulling apart thing and there was a noticable mellowing, took the "bark" off if it
I've you've got a spare duvee, you could try some feathers, that should work.

You don't need a workshop. You just need to measure the diameter of your pipe. Filling it is one screw hole only.

A spare duvet you say? Isn't that gunna get a lil hot & catch fire? A couple of year ago i stopped in at a country pub on my way to the March Hare rally, went in grabbed a pint and went outside to find a gathering of bike people standing behind the TL peering down the right can,i had repacked it and added a layer of steel wool (thanks Loosebruce) the whole inner can was glowing bright red:pinch:Quite spectacular really.

Don't stuff that shit up there unless you want a metre long after burner flame out the back!
Pop down to your local muffler shop. You want the m to measure the internal diameter of your outlet pipe.
Lets say it's a 51 mm outlet (2 inch) and internal is about 48 mm. You require a length (150 mm will be fine) of smaller exhaust pipe that they can swell up to a outside diameter of 48 (to fit within the outlet of your existing muffler). A 38 mm pipe will work but they may be able to stretch a 35 - the smaller the pipe the less noise.
Once it's swelled up and is a neat fit in the end all you need to do is pop rivet or bolt it in place.
The reduced diameter of the outlet will knock off a few db - the length of pipe extending into the can will knock off more as the exhaust gasses have to backtrack to get out. You'll probably notice bugger all power difference and your neighbours will be happier!
Note just watch you don't drop the reducer down the centre of your muffler when fitting!

Goldie locks steelo pads sounds a heap more convenient. Pop em in then pull em out once its sorted

Goldie locks steelo pads sounds a heap more convenient. Pop em in then pull em out once its sortedIf you get them to weld a n M6 nut to the inside of the baffle he describes, and drill a 6mm hole in the lower part of the outlet spout, then you can remove that baffle any time you like  Plus you can drill extra holes in the tube, till you get balance of sound you desire. Steelo pads are bit more hit n miss.
For a quick fix, stuff crushed coke cans down the muffler. Easy to remove, although watch they don't remove themselves at high rpm

Baaa ha ha, got the WOF today!
How much did it cost you ask? How many arduous days n nights spent labouring away to dampen her wolf like howl you ask?
$5 for a twin pack of Goldy Locks from Woolworths & about 5 seconds to stuff them in
Tested it at home first, couple of blips on the throttle & they shot out, so stuffed them in a little further & hey presto! Didn't think they would last under actual load so pulled them out & shot round to the garage, stopped just around the corner, stuffed them back in & pootled along to the garage gingerly. Got the WOF no drama & when I left I fanged it up the road & they both shot out the back
Happy times :sunny:

Aha, I got smacked on the helmet by a Goldy locks earlier, that would explain it then
Well done but did they actually noise test it at your chosen WOF centre, I don't remember them doing it a t LTNZ, Oh well if they did it passed, cool, go ride. :niceone:

It went in the first time through a bike shop, I wasn't present so I can only assume it was actually tested properly as was told it was only 2db over. I took it in for the re test & he didn't do anything other than ask me if I stuffed something up the tail pipe, to which I said yes lol, I then turned her over & he straight away said "oh yeah that's much quieter" & gave me the thumbs up :niceone:
