.mkv is a container. DivX is a video codec, but also there's a .divx media/file container.

If you want to convert the .mkv to an .avi with DivX encoded video, http://alltoavi.sourceforge.net/ will do it.

If you want to convert it to a .divx file, I'm not sure how without researching it.

Try Mediacoder, Sarge. It's on that internet thingy.

Don't, MKV is the way forward, just update your media player or something.
Most all High Definition things are MKV.

or download the k-lite codec. It allows you to run nearly any format within Windows Media Player.

It will work but I have to say VLC is pretty average at high bitrate streams. Get Media Player Classic Home Cinema. http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/download-media-player-classic-hc.html

Its, by far, the best HD player. You can also set it up to do hardware assisted decoding if your videocard has that feature.

Handbrake would be my first choice for format conversion. It's free and fairly easy to use.
