Just found a random photo while trawling through a whole lot of negative scans my dad did last year. Does anyone know where this is, and if it's still there?

He's about my age in the photo's so I'm guessing it's around 30 years ago.

Well being a child of the mid 80's I'm finding some of dress sense in the other photo's both quite funny, and also somewhat disturbing. I knew stubbies used to be cool, but I wasn't aware the EVERYONE wore them!

Pretty much on the button except it was taken in Gill Street, New Plymouth. The tower crane in the background was probably working on the State Insurance Building (now Genesis). Toranas were being driven by Jose' Kanga (sp) and THe French Hell Drivers and were probably near new (HX rego plate).

New Plymouth, Gill Street. H rego on a Torana would place it about 1978.

Right, It was the L.H. Johnson motors rather than the panel shop in Hawera.

ahhh, it is amazing what google can do!

I did know it was around '75 by the plate. When I war a lad the family car was a '75 Cortina with a plate no to far off.

Notice the lack of protective barriers...

The answer must then be: "The good old days" or there abouts.

In the good old days sex was safe and motorsports dangerous.
Now it's the exact opposite.

lol, you're not wrong... haven't seen it in it's latest state (was being rebuilt last time I passed by... but when I stayed there thay had floor to ceiling windows in the bar/restaurant looking straight out over the coast, the cliff dropped to the sea right in front of you...

Now I think about it R6, that original place was burnt down. Early 90's maybe?

BINGO!

Well done.......

As you climb out of the gorge heading north there's a wee slip road to the right. I shot up there (Feb 04) on a solo ride home from Methven. Couldn't resist stopping for a look, took several shots in both directions.

Have a drink on you.

Hmm i think the rd maybe still closed up there, been heaps of avalanches this season. No ridin this weekend gotta set up bike for week long tour up north to the cold kiwi. So i had better do a dummy pack and adjust my suspension for the added weight...
