Heya folks. I am in need of a good idea. I need some gifts for my friend and his family in the US. The dude is in mid fourties, has a 17 year old son and a 20 year old daughter. The budget is several hundreds.
I want to send him something from NZ. The first time was easier - I sent some greenstone stuff. This time I need something else. I don't mind a box with some misc stuff, but I don't want it to look cheap and I don't want to send anything he can buy in US. The dude fancies woodworking and is a medieval history buff and the kids are regular college kids. Ideas would be appreciated.

I gave some Canadian friends Greenstone carvings too.
They loved them.
How about a carved wooden Patu or Taiha with paua inlay, and some bone carvings for the kids.

Petrified wood... polished and packaged. Friggen heavy though, and probably not cheap to post but...
Absolutely stunning to see the grain of the timber, inside a hunk of rock with a polished face. :done:

Probably not a bad idea. Where can I source it?

3 or 4 kilograms of bacon flavoured lard and some orange cheese in a squirt tube should do it.

Another interesting idea. Do you know of any titles that you'd recommend?

Ngatea. Have no idea what the place is called, but it is gemstone place. It is signposted off SH2 on your way to the Coromandel. Seriously, it is really cool. I have some, amazing stuff. Rock that is rock, that is wood? If you want to see what it looks like before a trip to Ngatea whistle out.

It is a bit tactless to talk of a rope in the house of a hanged man. He got suckered into voting for Obama and is really sorry for the resulting mess.

How about some traditional New Zealand delicacy like marmite? I love feeding it to Americans and watching their reaction.

There is a place up north that specilises in swamp kauri products.
Not too sure where you are but some of the northen bikers might know of the place. Big range of prices for items from book marks to garden seats. Might be worth a look on the net if you can find the name of the firm. Someone may know.

Would a barrel of oil be deemed offensive? Those yanks seem to REALLY want that stuff.
