What a weekend, im absolutely buggered, especially after writing all this lol
King of Levels round 2 – Saturday
After an awesome job by all the team at MCR especially Kev in the workshop to get my bike up and running for the weekend, I was told I have to take it easy in practise to help run in the new bottom end & also the new piston.
So I took it reasonably easy and did a couple of quicker laps at the end to qualify 4th, sweet front row.
Weather was crap and getting worse, so on went the wets.
Race 1
Got an average start and was still 4th into the 1st corner, went down the straight to see yet another red flag at levels (2/3 races last time got red flagged).
Got a much better start on the restart and was 3rd into the 1st turn, drafted a new smr450 down the straight for 2nd (couldn’t do that before).
Stayed in second for most of the race but got passed on the 2nd last lap and finished 3rd.
Race 2
Crap start but still pushed into 3rd into turn 1.
Passed into second by going around the outside on the decreasing radius and giving me the inside line for the hairpin.
Pulled a decent gap but could catch my mate in 1st place, but I was happy with second.
Race 3
Best start of the day, 1st into turn 1 and lead the whole race.
Had a quick look over my shoulder on the last lap round the hairpin and couldn’t see anyone for quite a way, wow I thought, what the hell happened??
I was stoked to get my 1st win at levels and pulled a mean wheelie down the straight after the race too.
Found out my mate crashed into the 1st corner trying to avoid me cos he came in too hot.
He cracked his clavicle in his right shoulder and wouldn’t be racing in Invercargill.
Southland Motard Championship Round 1 - Sunday
Was looking forward to racing for prizes and prize money for a change.
Weather was clearing and forecast was for a dry day, so off came the wets and on go the slicks.
Race 1
Great start and 2nd into the huge sweeper at Teretonga, went round the outside to take the lead.
Got passed down the straight on the next lap but managed to take him on the inside into Castrol, just for him to pass me down the straight on the next lap.
Couldn’t get him into Castrol this time but he ran in too hot and lost the front.
I looked around quickly too see a rmz right up my ass.
He passed me into the elbow and lead onto the last lap, I managed to squeeze through the inside into Castrol. He tried to pass me into the last corner but over shot, so I ducked to the inside and got a great drive to hold him off for the win.
I didn’t find out till after the race that the guy I was battling with until he crashed was Scott McMurray, the guy who won Burt Munroe in the open motard class last year.
Race 2
Great start again, 2nd into the sweeper, went inside into Castrol to take the lead and lead until the white flag when I got drafted down the straight.
I followed the guy and tried to take him at the hairpin, but wasn’t quite close enough.
I knew I had to get as close as possible through the elbow and get a good run onto the straight, so that’s what I did.
I got a great drive out of the corner and was right behind him, pulled out halfway to the line and just managed to get in front before the flag.
Wicked 2 from 2 this is awesome and wow my bike is going good.
Race 3
Scott McMurray borrowed a bike from his mate to see if how well it went for this race, its one of those new 570 Husaberg’s with the backwards engine.
Well I can tell ya it goes bloody good.
I got a good start but Scott just pulled away, even off the line.
There was nothing I could do, that thing was just way too quick.
Took a comfortable 2nd though, and im not sure if it counts if you change to a completely different bike as far as championship points go??
But either way, 2 1st’s and a 2nd I have got a good lead and am really looking forward to the next round in 3 weeks.
I did a 111.2 fastest lap which is a full 2 seconds faster than I have ever gone round Teretonga so bring on Burt Munroe!!
Big thanks to MCR for fully rebuilding my bike in a day and getting it going really well.
Metzeler tyres are the best i have ever ridden on, dry or wet!
Mums big breaky on Saturday is unbeatable and the support I have had from my family and friends for both days was awesome
