Yes, my personal preference is for roads that tend to wear the sides of my tyres, but this is really an intro to endurance riding for many and last year we had too many finish very late or not finish at all.
There's no reason why this route couldn't be done in 11'ish hours in 'GC mode' and the aim is for everyone to be in by 9:00 - 9:30pm.
We have 22 confirmed registrations already so it's looking good to be more than the 50 riders last year.

You may shiver on the Shiver in November. The cold temps from Stratford to Wellington last year settled my decision to go back to a bike with a fairing. Yes I am soft.

If you'd gone faster you could have done it in daylight...Cheeky, but must concede your point is right.
It was close to 7pm when I arrived in Stratford. From there it was bloody cold.
The 2008 route was a little tough and I was one of the few that did the gravel section, which put us back in time.
I got behind in time early on in the ride. Once over the Takas it started raining so I stopped to put on the wet weather gear. That put me at the back but I soon caught up to a group travelling at 85 - 90k/hr. Being polite I tucked in behind for a while. When we arrived in Ashhurst there was a large group fuelling bikes and stomachs. My calcs showed at this pace it would be a total 16 hour trip. I buddied up with Des (Blackbird) who was also frustrated by slow riders and we headed off, did the gravel bit which most missed and caught up to another group at Taihape. Once again we got stuck behind a group whose pace was too slow.
If I go on this years ride I will pass anyone who is not riding at 100 - 110kph on straights or using the bike's acceleration to regain pace out of corners. An average of 85kph is a required average to complete the course by 9pm. This would allow for 3 fuel stops and lunch. Speedo error needs to be considered (many jap bike speedos read 8% high) and target arrival/departure times at key destinations (including fuel stops) should be worked out prior to the ride so as to keep on the pace.
This ride is a legal speed cruise - not a a poddle or coffee ride.

Last time I looked, you were already registered.

We now have 30 registered although one is marginal and I'm still awaiting details for two others.

Had a great ride the early part of the day. Unfortunately, when we hit the gravel that slowed us down sufficiently that the group I was with lost quite a bit of time. Then we came across Grub's accident which again caused us to stop for a while and then continue at a slightly slower pace than we would have.
All the delay's resulted in us ending up on the back roads up Sanson way in the dark and getting slightly lost.
So as one of the group that did finish last year, but took significantly longer than we should have, I'm looking forward to doing it again this year (only alot faster)

Pack what exactly?....it's a day ride! Do you guys not always carry your footpump, 1st Aid Kit, hat, sunnies, camera, water & nut bars, rags, tape & bungys in the top-box?.....or are you expecting to break down and might need to sleep over somewhere?
More riders on and off.....More prizes received from Bryce at Buckets 'n Bits......More feedback received on my dodgy instructions....
...I can assure you all...If you find yourself on a gravel road (other than on the Para's), you've taken a wrong turn or missed a turn.
Make it a great day!

What a fantastic day, couldnt have asked for better weather or company
Left Palmerston North at 5.0 am and got home at 6.30. A couple of interseting moments, the first on Eight mile where someone decided to dump a river on the road and the second on the desert road with a police car doing a u turn in front of us :sweatdrop resulting in an apology from the oficer and the twat in his gold colour sabaru that was tailgating us getting a ticket. I have to admit it brought a smile to my face when the said twat barreled past us on one of the straights and just as he he got beside me my radar detector went nuts. There is a god
Thanks John and your sponsers for what was an awesome day, well organised and planned even got the weather perfect :woohoo:
The Paraparas were simply awesome in the dry and daylight. I was having a leak at the Ratahei service station when i heard a bike pull up in the forcourt, a moments silence then a loud :woohoo: woohoo, My thoughts exactly

My first endurance ride, and the VTR was reasonably comfortable.

Mint roads to ride, the whole day was a real buzz.

Well the "woohoo" from me was for exactly that reason. That was the best trip I have ever had across that stretch of road.
All of stars or moons or planets were alined and the result was 74 kms of nirvana. New tires, clean & clear road, basically no traffic and away I went.
The link road from Te Kawa was another woohoo moment to. Had to go and shake Johns hand when I got back in to say thanks for showing me such a awesome stretch of tarmac.
My mate Rob & I made an unexpected stop in Mangaweka on the way back and got caught up in a Hens Party. Ended up taking the bride to be for a scoot up the road & back. She had to do 3 things she had never done before as a challenge and she had never ridden on a motorbike or never been 100 mph. So.... we were able to help knock 1 or 2 off the list.
Love this ride & will do it every time I can. Great crew & fellow riders and always interesting.
