Well, thanks to Mac at Maidstone Yamaha's awesome valuation on my burned out fizzer and AMI Insurance giving me a Market Valuation policy, rather than an agreed value one (I pay premiums based on a $4000 value) I now have $5000 to spend on my next bike. :niceone:

I'm just gonna take my time, have a look around and wait until the perfect bike comes around.

Open to any and all suggestions on bikes but here's what I'm looking at:

FZR1000 EXUP (1989+)
VFR750 (1990+)
GSX-R750 (1992)
GSX750F (1990+)
CBR750F (1990+)
ZXR750 (1989+)

My list of requirements:

17 inch rear wheel
100+ HP
good tyres
easy to find parts
relatively easy to maintain.

Anyone interested in a digital ignitor from a 2NK-spec 1987/88 FZR750R pm me. This is the one that will change your 77BHP Japanese-spec FZR750R to a 107HP American-spec FZR750R (with a rejet as well).

I reckon your the one to figure that one out and have heaps of fun in the process test piloting them to help aid your decision. However if it was my decision to make, that would be easy :msn-wink:

As for your list of bikes, I say go for either the FZR or the VFR...can't say I've heard much about the CBR750 but it must be okay seeing it's a Honda!

Reckon you'd love the FZR1000, not that I'm biased owning one or anything...
Have you thought about an RF900? Not sure if they can be had for $5K, but I recall Kiwibiker saying that there must have been voodoo involved in the chasis development as it was rock steady

Good stuff. Though the 100+ hp requirement puts the Kibosh on the middle 5 candidates. Well the GSXR just squeaks through.

My RF was 5k. Had buggered discs though.

I’d vote VFR or FZR from that list.

Good news. Strangely enough I got more back for my GS as well. The assessor valued the bike at $5k instead of $4k.

Good luck with the bike hunt. Sounds like a great excuse to test ride everything you can. What about an older GSXR1100. A real man's bike apparently (too big for me anyway).

Yeah, I was going to say that.
Although you can squeak 100hp out of a 90-93 VFR, they usually measure around 80-summat at the wheel, depending on who you talk to.
Doesn't necessarily mean you should rule it out, as apart from R/Rs (easily replaced), and the sort of things that get tired on most bikes (suspenders, brakes, gearbox, etc.), they're very dependable, and a good all-rounder.

Not that I'm biased at all, at all.... :whistle:

Tis a good point- I had an 86 VFR before the FZR, with an overlap of about a month. If I hopped on the VFR and twisted the right grip I'd be thinking "Well come on- DO SOMETHING"- much less power everywhere.

For solo use the VFR are still a nice bike to ride if you can find a decent one.

Not significantly, but the 86-89 model was the lightest by far, and the most track-orientated. The 90-93 was the heaviest of the VFRs, so despite being more powerful than the prior model was less nimble.
The 94-97 VFR was slightly more powerful and had a better torque spread than the 90-93, courtesy of 2mm smaller carbs, and was possibly the best looking. The most powerful is the 98-01 VFR800 at a claimed 110PS, and a measured ~100hp.

Yeah, the RF900 is a possibility, but to be honest the only ones I've seen in my price bracket are around the 85-90,000 kms mark, and that's a lot of kms. Theres a good review of the RF900s here. I've heard of a few alternator problems with the RF's. The RF600 is discounted as its a bit of a horsepower lightweight, not to mention bloody rare so parts are tricky to find.

If I could find an RF900 with 45000 kms for $5000 I'd be seriously thinking... :whistle:

I used to have a GSXR750L - the 1990 model which was the first to have USD forks. Great bike. I had 91hp at the wheel on mine, suzuki claimed 100 of course.
Reliable and pretty easy to work on and get parts for. Excellent suspension as well.
The 91 model was very similar, with bodywork differences. They then went to water cooling with the WP, which are a rare bird indeed, and a stop gap before the SRAD models (T series) which were a better bike.
The FZR Exup would be another good choice, if y ou can find one for the money
