MERV - 675
After missing rd 3 of BEARS i had dropped down the points table. Scotty Sutherland (675) had a spill but still collected a large bag of points.
Rd 4 (short track) Realised that i had to pull my finger out as there is some very quick bikes starting to appear at BEARS.( nice/quick 998 monster & factory aprillia from Dunedin area) Changed my gearing going to a smaller rear.......means using 1st at the hairpin but gives better drive and less changes per lap.
Had a whole day with problem of hitting neutral going into hairpin (think i coasted of onto the grass 3 times) However not a bad day ended up with 2x3rd - 1x2nd - 1x4th - and a 1st. So will have managed to pull some points back (when the points are eventually posted!!!!!)
Sorted my gearchange prob so looking forward to next round.

ANTS - RG150
A very wet day at Levels and this was Ants 1st time on a wet track......he was a little nervous. finally proper qualifying with transponders so he gently felt his way around to qual 12th.
1st race. Great start (one of his best) took about 4 places into 1st corner. got into the grove real quick and managed to finish 6th and was still gaining on front group.
race 2. An average start. gradually battled his way thru...... was battling for 7th place when the other bike hit him coming onto hairpin and they both ended up on the grass. the other rider whent down but Ants stayed upright (although he nearly high-sided it getting back on track) luckily no places lost so a 7th place finish.
Race 3 Big sideways slip off the line and lost a couple of places. But again a solid ride saw him take 7th again.
He realises that he has too qual better and be more aggressive on the 1st lap. But a good result for his 1st wet races,

PETE - SV650 (clubmans)
Spoke to Pete on thurs and he said that he wasn,t riding if it was wet (he hates riding in the wet and had no wet tyres) AH!!!! i wasnt racing..so he could use mine.....problem solved ......... and a very nervous Pete. (also his 1st wet race meeting & only his 2nd meeting)
Watching him in qualifying he looked real smooth and not worried about the conditions and the laps times proved it he qual 2nd and would have been well up the table in F3 too. He was gob-smacked.
1st race (slight dry line) good start no heroics settled into 5th after lap one......... gradually built up speed and finished 3rd.
race 2 it was reallt wet for this one so my advice was to ride as hard as last race or even harder as tyre work better when it is fully wet....... Pete couldn,t get his head round this but obviusly took the advice...... he slowly worked his way up and with one lap to go he passed the leading ZX6 in the infield and took the win.
HAPPY would not describe it.:Punk::Punk:
QUOTE" better get me a set of those tyres next week" :Punk:
race 3 almost a repeat of race 2 but as he was going for the move on the leader he had a bit of a moment in turn 5 and couln,t regain the gap.

Summary.
Wet & miserable weekend but well worth it. Although Pete knows that he will be out-powered in the dry by the multis if he can stay at the sharp end he may finish towards the top at end of season (he is now praying for more rain) not bad for someone who hates the wet eh.
Ants is looking forward to mixing it with the lead group very soon.
And i am looking forward to the streetraces too begin.

Well done to everybody at the weekend. BIG THANKS to all the marshalls/officials who stood out in the rain. And well done to Levels/MCC for getting proper qualifying times/positions at last.

Solid effort there fellas

was definatly better having proper qualifying and not having to go hard out on the warm up lap to get a decent grid posy

see ya there next month

Yeah thats for sure, means you dont have to worry about the slower riders who want to be first on the gird getting in your way

Sorry Harvd.
Not trying to imply that you hit him:no: ( maybe should have worded it better.......contact with another rider prehaps)
Too far away for me too actually see incident and only going by Ants after race mutterings.
Our apologies

Swerve,

Sounds like your guys had a good time in KOL2.
Pete was certianly going well. I kept an eye on him when watching clubmans. Whe we packed up at the end of the day we drove vans around to Castrol corner and watched last Clubbie race of the day. Your SV man was going very well in the wet (hard to believe it was his first time on wet tyres), he was keeping mike on the ZX6 firmly in his sights. I was impressed.
I think you want to continue encouraging his racing, and I would add that he could very well be ready for joining his formula class, he would defn not be embarrased. He seems to have the pace and may enjoy the competition nof like minded pro-twin kit.

I'll need to make a point of coming over next time and actually saying hi to you guys and meeting you's.

Regards
Eric

Thanks Feral 1
You are right he would not have embarrassed himself i F3/pro twin......... at least not in the wet.
He is going to stay in clubmans for the moment as he still has a lot to learn in the dry (i went 8secs a lap quicker than him on same bike at ruapuna)
Its only his second race and debut seeson.
Ants will also ride this bike later in season with a view to riding it next year. (i can see pete getting something different)
As the multi,s and 675,s are much quicker in the dry he can still learn a lot from tailing them and praying for anoher wet round to even up the points a bit.
Will have to catch up at next meeting mate.

Bwahahahahaha get in here first before someone else does !
Out of this weekends round, i'm old and take longer to heal now !
Fat chance of you gettin in my way Merve, beauty of qual timing !!! Been on the bike twice now and fell off second time hahaha, long way to come before i'm in anyones way ! DOH !!!!

On another note, are you aware of the bears class in the posties meet at taupo on the 31st oct ? with round 1 of PMCC BRM summer series the day after (1st nov) Taupo as well ! Then of course round 6 VMCC on the 17th oct at manfeild !
Could sort storage on this side of the ditch for your gear (van trailer & bikes) here if you guys were into it, could get ya's to the ferry and pick ya up prior to each event, if you arrange someone to pick ya up in picton (second vehical perhaps) or fly maybe ?
(depends on what events ya got down your way in oct i guess)
Food for thought mate

Sorry mate............ i know about the longer/older healing process..... im one of those too.
My bloody lad has bendy bones im sure.
that is an awsome offer bud and i would love to have taken you up on it and supported the efforts up north to host BEARS events.:sunny: However...............
starting on 5th sept one or all of us have a race meeting for 6 consecitive wks ........then a break on 17th oct (when we are doing a static display at local A&P show) then Greymouth the following weekend.......... so cant really squeeze anything else in.

Good read, and good results !!

Had a whole day with problem of hitting neutral going into hairpin (think i coasted of onto the grass 3 times)

I just dropped a tooth on the front sprocket so I wouldn't have to use 1st at the hairpin cause I was finding neutral, worked pretty well. (I still got neutral on one corner  and have to re-learn how to launch without a wheelie but I think I'll stick with it for the time being :) )

I suppose its different horses for different coarses with the gearing thing...Wharfy.:argue:
At ruapuna i found that running a -1 front does mean you can take the haripin in 2nd and with that carry quite good mid corner speed too.
However you dont get the pull out of the turn as revs too low ( especially at BEARS meetings where the big v-twins eat you out of the turn):(
Also found that i was almost(sometimes did) hit the limiter at end of straight if i got real good drive out of last turn.
Im not a fan of using 1st gear on a track unless you have a really high 1st ratio in the gearbox itself (believe the 09-675 has this) Had a gsxr600 once with a factory box it was great 1st went forever):headbang:
The startline/wheelie thing is also a factor......... always pulled big wheelstands with the smaller front cog................ does it now too but it just rises up and lasts for all of 1st and gently comes down after you have hit 2nd.

Will you be at Manfield/sept round bud
