Well It's a wednesday morning and i'm sipping on a coffee bored out of my nutt ! Can't do SFA due to a few broken ribs i copped last round of the VMCC winter series, Near 4 weeks and still aint right grrrrr !
So I thought i'd start a little thread to document my next project !
Picked this little beauty up off a mate (with sponsorship of a mate, on ya mate, i'll pay it off as soon as possible)(after i've spent a fortune doing it up and another fortune racing it) so yeah i owe ya !
Slideshow Here (http://picasaweb.google.com/sinfullbastard/MuddyWaters#slideshow/5371439515038679154) of all pics up till the last post.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_3nZ66-Z8vBs/Sos3CgjBAUI/AAAAAAAAC4I/sjpNPFraKTc/s640/bike%20008.jpg
As some of ya who may have been to visit will know, i haven't really been using my garage other than for storage due to an old car taking up space, so the house has been my garage for bikes !
But due to the acquisition of a noisy tune thing for H to sit at thumping away on, things are getting tight in the bike park !
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_3nZ66-Z8vBs/Sosv6okEJbI/AAAAAAAAC3g/6Ls1VVGISpk/s640/bike%20005.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_3nZ66-Z8vBs/Sosv8koqDUI/AAAAAAAAC3k/Y1d9Ka5ZMDU/s640/bike.jpg
SO i gots to make room in the garage Doh !
What a mess lol, dragged the car out and started shuffling shit around, stacking tyres up, boxes repacked and restacked to make more room and get the floor clean, so as to be able to set up a bench in the middle, hang some fluros above it and get the Norton up off the floor ready for the tear down !
Got an hour or so into it and the body started to let me know it wasn't enjoying it !
Hence my being here tip tapping on the keyboard while the painkillers kick in !
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_3nZ66-Z8vBs/Sosvx6JggHI/AAAAAAAAC3Q/n8nJxNN42M0/s640/bike%20001.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_3nZ66-Z8vBs/Sosv4pXRNKI/AAAAAAAAC3c/7whDs80Wj5M/s640/bike%20004.jpg
The Bike has been completely submerged in a flood, so when i say tear down i mean complete tear down !
The engine is siezed (it was drained and oil poured down the plugs) but you know it's still siezed !
Wheels go round but you know, there still going round slowly !
It was rebuit around 17 years ago and in the previous owners words, thrashed for ten years then drowned, then left for the last 7 while he was overseas !
Few goodies on it, like a belt drive primary, alloy rims and stainless spokes, new Isolastics !
The way the previous owner was talking it may have gearbox issues, as he reconed i should go for a Quafe gearbox ! But for the price of a commando gearbox compared to a quafe, i might see how i go with a stock box and look at it if i start blowing too many .

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_3nZ66-Z8vBs/SotMTWfJ1BI/AAAAAAAAC4k/2brLmbRy4GQ/s640/bike%20009.jpg
I will try to keep this thread updated throughout the rebuild untill the bike reaches the track !!
Yes !!! For all those out there that might scream blue murder bwahahahaha
It will be run in on the track !!
Not sure how it will look when it's finished, but you will find me lurking around any classic race meets for the next few months !!!

A commando with gearbox issues? Wow?
No - seriously, they can have major issues, pull it out and check the main bearing housing, they crack....

Apparently docs reccomend huge quantities of bourbon as pain relief, until as per Mr Billy Conolly ya feet get pissed.
Ribs hurt, mine weren't broken just widened to get surgeons hand into lung,so understand the pain of broken ones.Dad had cracked ribs a few years ago, they were ok,then one day he leant on a gate and they cracked again, cracked ones don't heal as well apparently as broke ones.

Cheers guys, never made it ... noo thats a lie i did get out there a few times today ! I didn't clean up any more, but there is however a few more cans and bottles stacked around the bike !
Heard about the bearing housing issues Paul and the hanger kit that fixes it !!

Unfortunately no i don't think it will be anywhere near done by then, will be in with the bears at the posties meet on the 31st oct and then round 1 of the BRM summer series at Taupo that weekend !
Gonna be a toss up between getting food on the table, making it to all the meets i can during summer and doing this rebuild as it is ! Well food is over rated and i need to diet, so that just leaves two haha
Will be out at manfield for the next two weekends though, making a nuisance of myself !

Well it's been sitting in the shed gathering dust (apart from giving it a CRC shower) due to the body being good for sweet farrk all, other than sitting round feeling sorry for myself awww and a bit of drinking !

Still cant lift much more than a 12 oz glass, so had to grab a mates endless chain to hoist her up onto the bench and after a bit of construction i had her supported on the frame, so i can strip it completely !

Have come up with an idea for a name for the beast, since it was dug out of 3 ft of mud after the Paekok floods a few years back, perhaps even a paint job (will have to check out a few album covers) So one day soon we'll be smashing an (empty) bottle of bourbon and Christening her Muddy Waters !!
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_3nZ66-Z8vBs/Sp7xO2POzHI/AAAAAAAADCc/YTayV-aohtA/s640/Norton%20007.jpg
Can see i'm going to end up with a whole new set of (old) tools by the end of this project !!!
Wish i'd been more on to it when the old man passed away and ransacked his garage, instead of standing back thinking, look at them scavangers go, when the Step familly went in for what they could !!!
But hey, half the fun is gonna be cruising the second hand shops, old mens garage sales, trade me etc etc

Hope it don't take too long for the old oil and grease to absorb into the skin !!!

Spent 3 or 4 hours stripping bits off today and didn't find too much evidence of it's time spent in "muddy Waters" ! The brake drum was one place were it showed, But the oil tank seemed (at first glance) to be clear of any dirt or rust Just a bit of dirty oil !
The cush drive rubbers look as if they could do with replacing, like the Iso dust covers (brittle would bwe an understatement !

Only bad i've found so far are the fork rods (which i've mentioned, $200 aprox). An obvious quick fix in the primary case and a weld where the frame has cracked and been welded at some stage (fairly recent) They recon stress cracks come in twos so will be looking for the other !!

Anything Whitworth ! I have No idea what the sizes are actually, but the motor and box will be on the bench tommorrow And thats where i'm gonna start scratchin the head lol, all the barrel bolts are open end whitworth for starters (ya cant get a ring on em) !
Can lay my hands on a clutch puller, but will want one of my own (haha i just know this)
Gonna go grab myself some Quality AF allen keys morra as my old ones are little short shit ones that have layed around for a hundred years !

Um - you might want to check that out on a Norton forum. I know for the Triumph, by the 70's a lot of threads and sizes had 'upgraded'.
If your heart is set on WW, you can buy spanner sets from British Spares. Can't help with the single plate clutch tool, all my stuff's Triumph these days!

Was the other option !! Know that B/S have AF kits as well for the Nortons !
Might do a bit of visiting while i'm out and see what WW tools ppl have and will lend me for the strip down of the engine and go from there !!!
Not silly to convert i guess, cause i can walk in to the local engineers here in Otaki and get anything i might want in AF, but might be scratching to find WW !!

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_3nZ66-Z8vBs/SqEaA8uNUqI/AAAAAAAADGc/FVQCukfGvMw/s640/norton%20038.jpg
I Knew metric would cover the odd Whitworth size (or BSF whatever) and yep they were fitting nice and snug, had all the barrel bolts sussed and the head bolts !
Or so i thought !!!
Who does this shit ?

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_3nZ66-Z8vBs/SqEgXXeAoQI/AAAAAAAADG8/iGfAwFRMxW0/s640/norton%20039.jpg
Bugga ! My only 13 mm spanna !!! Grrrrrrr ! Every second bolt on my triumphs are 13 mm
Does that sound wrong ? Or do the brits sound undecided !!! W/W, BSF, awww fuck it lets go with the Japs and go metric (ok prolly wasn't the japs but hey) Who won that war ? And how ?
I mean How the hell the british mechanics got on in the field i'll never know ! Who designed this shit ?
........ No wait, your plane is grounded untill we get in a new shipment of, Specialskinnylittleopenendspannerstofittheonebolto nyouraircraftengine, that we can't fucking get at with anything else !!!
Did my head in, being beaten by an engineering HELLO ! Luckily it was club night and there was bourbon to be drank !!! Hence my updating this at.... haha crickey, no point going to sleep ........ oh wait no bourbon in the house, anyone would think i was trying to cut down prior to a summer of racing due in shortly !!!!
Meh the clutch tool arrives in the morning, as i expect will the shipment of skinnylittletoolsthatonlyyourNortonneeds !
Along with the Norton Petrol Heads that have been riding them as long as i have women !
Hahaha that blows any thought of cuttin down on drinking !

I've got my eye on an old project but am havin' all sorts of problems getting my better half to agree. Nah the Mrs and I had a big talk about how i wanted to sink my share of the last property split on having meself some toys when we first met !! She was cool about it so long as i don't leave her behind !
Worry about old age later, i mean hey, she's 13 yrs my junior and you only as old as ya feeling (up);)

Yeah Nothings changed in the garage since yesterday ! Pulled the speed 3 out for the first time since Jaide aid and give it a crc bath then took it out for a squirt to make sure i scrubbed any crc off the tyres !!
Was the big pain killer free test lol, and apart from the side stand doing a submarine impression in the mud during the wash down all went well with no torn ribs ! Even managed a few 2nd gear stand ups (more like squating ups) God i love that speed triple !
Well I finally found the one guy mad enough to pick a bigger basket case than my project.
Great stuff mate. Will watch with interest.
To be honest man i recon if i'd just taken the top end off it and cleaned it up ! (maybe drift the pistons free with the old 2x2 #8 styles) i could have got it going and ridden it pretty easily ! Seems to be none or very little evidence of it ever being under 3 ft of mud ! Kudos to the previous owner, he did do a strip down of all but the internals, even the carb looks spotless inside ! Near every bolt was just nipped up or finger tight, so it has been a breeze to work on so far (other than the lower head nuts haha)
Was that Nut under the inlet that i started grinding the spanner up for Paul, haha found the front ones after that, when it still wouldn't budge ! I then proceeded to attack the spanner with a vengance lol !
I seem to recall i did get a 13 mm socket to slip over it (i think) but ya couldn't get any sort of drive into the socket so, will check again and if so, weld a nut on an old socket to get a spanner on (only need to unwind it 1/2 doz times and then be able to get a open end on it !) It'll be norton tool Number 1 haha
How would ya go about torquing them little fookas up though i have to wonder ! Can ya get open end torque wrenches ?

Ah yes that old gem, Triumph were quite keen on them too, lost count of the times i have come to a screaming stop when working on my '51 Thunderbird because i need a spanner in half width in some wog size that can not be identified by anyone under 70 years old to reach some stupid bolt in a really queer place that some other animal has already started to round off.

And pretty bloody grubby too i might add !

But the most unusuall thing was the extra clutch plate ! Surprised the clutch ever worked (properly) the last 4 in there were clutch clutch steel clutch !

But looking at the assembly when its all in the basket it does look like there is one missing but not enough room for a steel and clutch !

We put it down to the belt drive being slightly wider and causing confusion, as it doesn't matter about the space i have my finger on as its all still pushed inward nicely by the pressure plate !
Found that the push rod had been doing some heavy work and was slightly burred so this could be the problem there also !
Anyway ! Thats it for now, i'll be giving it a few days to let that crc soak in and prolly only strip the stator clutch etc off that side pop the motor out and take the thing down to Steve Hunwick to work his magic on !!!!
While i work on things i can handle, like wheel bearings, Head sets, get the forks sorted and a bit of polishing mehhhhh nah fuck the polish i just want it to go not Glow !!!!
