View Full Version : Camera mounts (yeah, again)

Some time ago I bought, in a moment of weakness, an Oregon Scientific ATC2K action camera for bike use...:weird:

I mounted it, initially, on the bar end weight. Where it was quite stable, easy to point and control but where it was subject to interference from the engine or whatever - suffice to say the pictures were always wavy...a vertical line always looked as though it had waves moving through it. Apparently this particular camera is known for this problem when mounted on a V-Twin...(don't ask me why). Check out any of my vids on Ewe-Choob if ya wanna see the effect...(you probably don't actually). :nono:

So I stopped using the thing. But since I still wanna try the odd vid, I decided to try the helmet mount instead. :blip:

The camera comes with a long silicon rubber strap that you can wrap round your helmet and mount the camera holder on. So I tried it this morning...well last night is when I put the strap on...

Trouble is, helmets curve don't they...and really tight rubber straps have a habit of sliding to the point of least resistance, haven't they. 'Specially when mounted on something smooth, shiny and wet.

Fortunately I had mounted the strap on the lower half of the helmet. (I couldn't have mounted it up top anyway because of the visor movement).

When I went out in the rain this morning, all appeared well initially, although I had no idea what direction the camera was pointing (down at the road as it turned out or at best, at the left hand rear view mirror...) I hadn't gone far when I noticed that something was choking me to death...some bloody thing had a death grip on my neck. It didn't take rocket science to work out that the strap had slipped off the bottom of the helmet on the side where the camera was mounted and was now being supported by my neck. Those straps sure do hang on tight, huh? So I stopped and pulled it all off before I expired all over the road. :thud:

Back at base, I checked the footage that I had - all ten minutes of it. Wonderful views of the road zipping by below with the odd roadside scene thrown in when the strap slipped off. No wavy lines this time though! So the camera is OK if not mounted directly on the bike. But how the hell do I mount it on the helmet without it doing what it did this morning? I have no idea frankly. Unless I stick the strap down somehow and I don't really want to get spooge all over the helmet and besides who knows what solvents in glue would do to the integrity of the helmet..?

So has anyone done a helmet mount with one of these cameras? If so, pleeeeeese tell me how you did it. Before I kick the camera through the wall...

Thanks team. :sunny:

Get hold of Ivan at Ram Mounts. They import strips of this amazing velcro-like tape made by 3M that is way better than velcro. It comes in about 75mm strips. It's bloody brilliant. Unlike velcro the only thing it grabs hold of is another strip of the same material. It's completely waterproof and sticks like ice cream to the back seat of a car.

I have a steel camera mount that bolts to the gas cap surround ring. I have never used it, but if you want to take a ride up this way , you are welcome to try it and see if the problems persist.

Thanks for your kind offer Boman...I think this cam needs to be totally unattached to the bike though...from what I have read anyway...

Theres those mounts that you can get which are permanently stuck to your head but I wouldn't do that to a helmet, don't know about you though

Hmmm...I can see I should have worded that a little differently...to take care of the bent minds in here....

That reminds me - when I was on vacation last year (Ye BikerGodz - actually exactly a year ago :shit: ) I saw a guy with a helmet with a large-ish aluminium bracket screwed to the side of it. It was perhaps 6 or 7cm wide, and stuck out from the helmet maybe the same amount.
At the time I couldn't work out what it was for, but oviously (?) it was a camera mount. Looked huge and dangerous though - I couldn't help wondering about all the dangers associated with it.

Plenty of good tips in here and my old set up is there as well.

With the little camera I do two extra things :

1 coat the batteries in vasaline (not the ends) this is to stop the little blighter loosing power due to vibration.

2 put a little bit of packing under the SD card so it does not loose contact due to vibration.

You should get some good results. Well enough for giggles on youtube anyway.:sunny:

The stuff I have read about the V-Twin thing applies to the 2K - not the 3K. Now it could all be an urban myth, but I do have the wavy thing going when I mount the camera on the bike directly. And I don't have it if I mount it on the helmet - which my original post tells you did not work for long...
It might just be bike vibration, but so far, every mount I have tried that is directly on the bike has been the same. And I have tried a couple - even isolating the camera with cork. Same result.
I have considered a ram mount but not sure I want to spend more money on a maybe cure...
No big deal - the vids I have made are incredibly boring anyway...I might just park the camera in the drawer...
