Righto. gonna give the smoker a go. Looking at older ones so i can have a bit spare after the sale of mine to do piston and buy a few bits and pieces (tyres if need be, high seat, rear spring, spares and whatever it needs to get it hummmmin)

I like the 250s. think the 200 is too small for my 100kg lanky frame. There ain't many 300s around in my price range but i'd go for one of them too if i found one. I wanna test ride em but if there's something in Auckland I may ask if any KBer might be keen to have a look for me???

Anyone know what to look for/ what years(s) to avoid. When was the major model change around 2004? I've noticed the older ones have a white rear spring? what are the differences/problem? with the older ones?

Hopeing Danger might have a look in here 'cos i'm mainly interested to know the suspension differences and power delivery differences/power valve adjustability. Anyones input greatly valued. (even if ya just wanna moan about your missus, i'm here for ya)

I always have the asumption that if they can't be bothered cleaning their bike for an advert then they probably can't be bothered doing the basic maintenance, e.g filter etc.

Forget the black one its probably hot. The 2002 exc300 is old technology now. The 2006 model looks ok and we probably know the seller through the park. Quite happy to preliminary check them out up here. Then if I think they are OK you could grab a cheap Jet star ticket, check it yourself, pay 250 notes and get it transported back to that shit hole you live in.

Haha nah not stolen. Got it from a mate of his. Me and another mate have done all the work he lists on it (and will no doubt be doing whatever else it needs to be tidied up) so can go through whats been done and why with ya sometime if it looks likely to happen. He's looking at all kinds of options from swapping yours to buying RMZ250's or KXF250's to swapping his ute (also on trademe) for a 08 CRF450 so who knows. Edit: Plastics were swapped coz he's a Poof and wants things to LOOK gorgeous. Made us paint the tank too so it looked good. Got the oranage ones still too. (I'm guessing this is why people seem to think it's hot?)

cheers man. so 05 onwards has an orange rear spring. I wonder if it's a different spring rate/ designed for a heavier/lighter rider? I'll figure out the ergo thing when i test this 04 on sat hopefully... A major reason I like the oranges is the longer (taller) rider comfortability they seem to have

o3 models have stronger hubs and bigger forks than earlyer models

I'm looking at 250s cos theyre cheaper and more available in the age bracket i'm looking to spend in but would love a 300 if i found one at the right price. I want something as light as possible too so the elec start doesn't appeal (not that i can afford those ones anyway!) I've put bike buying on hold while my shoulder mends and i sell my house... if i get a good price it might be 300 o'clock!

It's been used for enduros and has had the suspension changed and then back to standard. Done over 120hours, looks a bit beat up by the photos.

Looking to get a KTM myself, either a 250EXC-F or 200EXC....just need to sell my road bike.

I think the 250 two stroke EXC got the eletric start only just now (2010 model). The '09 I rode with a few months back did not have an e-starter anyway. KTM do make mid season changes sometimes though, like "Six Days" releases for instance...

Just got home...... Long day.

My bike now has its new name...... Pussycat!!
It purrs through the trails and if provoke it by twisting its ear (throttle) It gets all mad and gives you scratches.

Main differences between the rmz and the Exc were:
4 strokes are much more direct on throttle. Exc close but not so arm stretching til halfway thru the revs.
Exc feels a lot lighter.
Exc can climb hills better than I can.
Electric start is perfect for someone lazy like me.
Kickstands rule!
Exc only sips the gas where the Rmz drinks it.
Having a speedo on the bike will kill me.

Overall the Exc seems much More controllable that the big 450.
Appears to be the same speed or faster. Being 5 speed means I'll be going faster.
Another plus is you can sneak up on the deer in the park then chase em!

I do love it though. 2 strokes rule!
I just need to ride it better.
Next wednesday I'll be back out there.
