View Full Version : Rimutaka Hill - fully double-yellow lined! %$#@n Pricks!

Just got a call from a Friend driving over the Rimutaka Hill this morning. They are in the process of painting continuous double yellows from top to bottom. he said they are doing the Feathers side at the moment but from he's seen it's an unbroken double most of the way. No doubt they will do both sides.
Absolutely over the top knee jerk reaction. How often has anyone heard of a head on accident up there? Not me. Yeah, bikes and cars do have close calls when overtaking at times but that's to be expected on such a twisty road. It's not causing carnage to warrant such a heavy hand.
Just be aware, cars can now dub us in for overtaking, no matter how safe a bike can zip passed a car.
One slow vehicle and it's a long boring trip.
What's the fine & demerits for overtaking on yellows?
A sad day for Wellington.

Well that sucks!! You occasionally come across a nice person who will pull left enough for you to squeeze past without having to cross the centre line (it costs them nothing really, it's not like they end up getting stuck behind you because you pass them and then crawl along....) but they are normally few and far between. Talk about take all the fun out of it! Almost time to trade the road bike in on a track bike I think.

Perhaps NZTA needs to come up with another colour for no passing lines that show it's OK for bikes but not for cars and larger vehicles...

Don't cross the double yellows when you overtake and you're fine.
Everyone buy a Stebel. When you hit a slow solo vehicle, tailgate and sit on the horn until they start crying and crash.

People of heavy vehicle's and cars have very little understanding of motor cycles and their size and what it takes to overtake distance wise, a lot less than any other road user. I myself have the respect after doing the ride for life as support driver with my son Zukin. I will always pull over were possible to allow your bikes to go on your merry way as there is nothing worse than to follow those diesel burning machines. No need for double yellow lines all the way over the hill. It has probably been decided by some office geek sitting behind a desk that has no idea of what the hill is like. This will cause more accidents than the very few that have been reported in the past.

The fuzz will need at least 2 or 3 *555 calls AND written complaints from the public to make anything stick in court. If you get a letter or a phone call, just don't respond to it.

I saw it last night, 50km Zone from the summit to twin bridges too while they carry this out.
It comes as no great surprise given some of the passing manouveres I've witnessed in the last few months and for a period of time this year there were bikes flinging themselves down the road with alarming frequency.
Shame thou, and I agree the other side will be next!

Close calls are "only to be expected"? I'm feeling a bit Katmanish about that statement. Ah well, I suppose it will pass.
Let me explain my comment further. Bistards outrage hit the nail on the head.
Like many of our roads and the accidents that happen on them, it's not the winding or narrow road's fault, it's not the slow vehicles fault, it's not the faster vehicles fault - what causes many accidents is putting all three ingredients together at the same place and same time. That's what causes the close calls on the hill, vehicles trying to pass slower vehicles.
I have absolutely no problem with people who want to drive under the acceptable NZ speed flow of 120 kph (just fishing for bites). Drive as slow as you want, just do it on your own time, and don't force your chosen speed onto others.
Faster traffic doesn't 'force' slower traffic to keep up (we're a fair and reasonable bunch). But slow traffic (by definition selfish inconsiderate bastards) almost always insist that all those frustrated vehicles filling their mirror must slow down to their chosen walking pace.
Back to the hill. The Rapa attracts hordes of drivers of SUVs, 4WDs, trailers and trucks. There are many places where a bike can safely slip passed these 'nice people in nice vehicles' but few real passing lanes.
This yellow lining has overnight turned most Riders into crims. What gives the slowest denominator the right to dictate the speed of all vehicles behind them.

Yep this is the way it going all over NZ. We all have to toe the line of the dumbest fucktard.
I go diving more than riding these days. Legislators and over zealous traffic police have ruined the spirit of riding on NZ roads. Add to that shithouse drivers who couldn't give a fuck about everyone else, assuming of course they actually realise that there are other road uses outside their little caged existence.
Seriously thinking of getting an offroader. Now they've gone and fucked the hill thats looking more and more like a sensible option.

Pink, perhaps, for Honda riders?
I'll subscribe to that!
The dropping of speed limits, proliferation of yellow lines and insertion of cheese cutters has been gripping my craw for some time.
The fact that in general, kiwi motorists are probably amongst the most arogant, ignorant bastards in the world may have something to do with it but it really sucks.
Maybe more biker protests are in order but the trouble with that is we'd just piss off the few cagers that do make room for us and like our token gesture against the WRB's, we would do it once then it would all be forgotten.
As for passing under this regime....how many of you have noticed the frequncy that cages make room for you on the hill compared to any other piece of road in the country? It drops from about 1 in 10 to 1 in 100!
I'm afraid we are doomed and that SH1 will soon be an attractive escape route from the Capital and a ride around the bays will soon be an exciting option........

What's so bad about this "penalise the many for the sake of the few" attitude is its not one I remember any of us voting on nor it being an election issue, so how come the roadies can just go and paint this stuff on? I suppose they'll tell me it was gazetted somewhere but even then I doubt there was ever a chance to object.
What a nanny state we live in and Finn's Prime Minister is letting this happen just like Finn's girlfriend Helen did.
The nice thing about dirt bikes is they don't paint yellow lines down gravel roads, but bugger they are sealing more and more of the roads and one day will there be a road rule that says its illegal to pass on the few gravel roads left which would be cheaper than using paint anyway.

We should drum up a petition to get a referendum to ask the question "Should allowing motorcyclists to cross yellow lines to pass vehicles as part of good vehicle driver correction be a criminal offence in New Zealand?"
How else can those drivers be taught a lesson and put in their place of knowing that they are too fricken slow?

As it works on Paremata Road. However, I've found now that because the cagers feel "safer" on that road now there's double yellows all the way along they avoid Grays Road like the plague.
Many times I've gone to work in the morning via Grays Road and seen maybe two cars along the whole road.
Any idea if the passing lanes are affected by this? I guess they will if they're putting a 50km/hr restriction on the whole road.

I get your point, however there are two reasons I personally don't pass on yellow lines. Firstly it's against the law and usually for a good reason (in the case in point not, but still) and I'm a good girl. Secondly, people are sheep. My concern is that I see enough fuck knuckle wank nuts in cars overtaking on double yellows already without any of them seeing me on my bike doing it (as I can do it faster than they can and generally because we sit higher than the average car driver, and can see the road is clear) and thinking they can too and then wiping out an oncoming vehicle. Anyway, it's naughty.:spanking:

There is no grey area here.
If the yellow is on your side of the dotted white, you may not (legally) cross to the right of it. Double yellows simply means the opposing traffic has the same constraint.
Double yellows carry no more weight than a single, in terms of overtaking.
If you can safely carry out an overtaking movement between the vehicle in front and the yellow, then unless you do something really stupid, you should be fine. Bearing in mind that the cager may see your manouevre differently...as might a snake (eh Riffer?)

Yellow lines cost way less money than building passing lanes. The problem with the roads in this country is the bloody lack of passing lanes.
More passing lanes and who would give a stuff is some old coot wanted to travel at 70ks instead of 100ks. Its the bloody frustration that we as riders/drivers feel that is causing many of these head on accidents.
I recently rode from Rotorua to Wellington and back and twice found myself inadvertantly passing on double yellows, because I was so busy watching traffic, passing opportunities etc and the place that I did pass was such a safe and obvious place to pass. I was just amazed to find some twat had painted no passing lines there.
Seems the double passing lines everywhere is a relatively new policy that is being implemented country wide.

Last time I checked they don't need clear vision to throw a three point turn in front of some on coming traffic

Could be but even thats getting harder to do with more areas being closed to bikes every year...... Auckland area is organised rides only pretty much.

$150 and 35 demerits for each count... last time I knew
Passing between car and yellow lines, legal, but some cops may still try to have you on.
Yesterday I rode from Auckland to Tauranga and back (and charged the customer well over $100 travelling fee). I passed vehicles where there were double yellows 3 or 4 times - easily enough room to zip past safely even if I had to cross the double yellows to do so. There were plenty of places with just the normal dashed white centre line where I wouldn't dream of passing. Sometimes the placement of the double yellows is retarded, sometimes it makes sense for cars to not try passing there, but bikes can safely pass. Even my four hundy :scooter: needs much less room to pass a slow car or truck than any car.
Of course I never actually crossed the double yellows, because that would be illegal :innocent:
It would be nice for it to be legal to cross the double yellows on a bike as long as you can do it safely. Of course it would also be nice if more motorists were courteous and moved to the left enough to let bikes pass without crossing the centre line - to those that do that now I give a grateful wave. Courteous drivers, what a concept! :weird:

Yellow lines cost way less money than building passing lanes. The problem with the roads in this country is the bloody lack of passing lanes.
More passing lanes and who would give a stuff is some old coot wanted to travel at 70ks instead of 100ks. Its the bloody frustration that we as riders/drivers feel that is causing many of these head on accidents.
I recently rode from Rotorua to Wellington and back and twice found myself inadvertantly passing on double yellows, because I was so busy watching traffic, passing opportunities etc and the place that I did pass was such a safe and obvious place to pass. Smokin Joe.
South Island passing lanes mean that the slow driver you have been waiting to pass, takes the outside lane, hugs the center line and speeds up to about 120kph minimum and does his damndest to hold that position until the end of the passing lane!
They then proceed at 70kph hugging the center line until the next passing lane and then it all starts all over again!
Do the revenue collectors target these drivers, "absolutely not"!
These drivers are the cause of all the of frustration, road rage and speeding in excess of big numbers to try and get around them.
I think the revenue collectors manage these bastard drivers on a catch and release program, much like trout fishers do!
Keeps the quotas up with out doing the hard hours! :nono:

Just got a call from a Friend driving over the Rimutaka Hill this morning. They are in the process of painting continuous double yellows from top to bottom. he said they are doing the Feathers side at the moment but from he's seen it's an unbroken double most of the way. No doubt they will do both sides.
Ummmm, I went over the Rimutakas today (God what a perfect day for a ride!!) and didn't notice double yellow lines the entire way....mind you I ride like a nana anyway so it wouldn't bother me.

What I found mildly ammusing is how smudged the new line is, with on almost every corner, the yellow paint has been screen printed all over the road by the tyres of vehicles that have crossed the wet centre lines.
In one case, the yellow lines were copied a good 2 metres onto the wrong side of the road by a truck.

To be honest, I'm not really surprised. I ride a fairly quick bike, love the 'Taka's and have ridden them on and off since I started riding 30 years ago. The thing I have been most pissed off with over the last few years, is the number of IDIOTS on big bikes that DO seem to ride like they are on a race track, to the detriment of other road users. I have had dickhead racer wannabes cut me off, dropping in on my front wheel exiting corners they thought they could pass me on, until they see the cage or truck coming the other way.
In all seriousness, I'm gonna hate this yellow line bullshit, but SOME OF YOU, and you will know who you are, ARE partly to blame. By treating the Hill as your own private race track, and the behaviour that goes with such arrogant road use, you have fucked it up for those who like to ride hard, but not at the expense and safety of other road users.

No.
If you don't cross the Yellows, it isn't an offence. The lines don't mean "no overtaking" they mean "do not cross".
However you need to be careful that you have the space and that you don't do it in a way that generates a *555 call or an actual written complaint.
Motorcycles don't get special rules written for them. We do get cut slack in heavy traffic due to our agility and size by Cops with a grain of common sense. Those without are perfectly within the scope of their job description to bust you with anything from "Passing on the Left" to "Careless driving".

so the short one about halfway up the featherston side...and the shortest one on the welly side? Both right handers?
Thats them..no great loss in terms of passing lanes..there are some white painted areas that could be used as pull in areas now...if anyone actually thought about being considerate of course....

Bah, whether it was 2 passing lanes or 4 passing lanes, they didn't need to remove any -_-. Now we've just got fancy white painted run offs to guarantee low sliding in the wet if you overcook slightly - did I mention the sheer drop off the edge? Unfortunately (and contrary to popular belief) I'm not a MotoGP rider and I'm not a master of drifting in the wet on a bike :P
Anyway, I'm sure as someones already mentioned... cagers won't be able to *555 till they pull over with the no cellphones rule!
PS. I'm not really fussed they've removed them, I'm purely bored at my desk at work.

..Apparently not.. I can only find an exemption for 111 calls. So good to know you're allowed to potentially kill others by phoning 111?
