I never speed while doing my laces - I like to take my time with them to ensure my shoes stay on.:shifty:
And I never speed, but if I wanted to I'd do it early in the morning on the weekend when the open road is very quiet...... .

And when I do, I keep a good eye out for cops.

NEVER in town... is pretty much my only rule. In any 50km zone I never do more than 55km (35km passing school buses) because as far as I'm concerned, those zones belong to predestrians, which 90% of the time are kids. On the open road, it's open speed limit for me :Punk:

Meh. I just ticked and then unticked pretty much all the options... because it depends! It depends on so many things. I mean, is speeding doing 51 in a 50 zone, or 61 in a 50 zone or 70 in a 50?
On my commute there are some places where I would never do more than about 52kph because the circumstances would make it dangerous for me or others. There are other places where I often catch myself doing 62kph and I have to remind myself to slow down - simply because I don't want to pay the fine, even though I think it's a perfectly safe speed for that area.
So my final and difinitive answer is "all of those places, and none of those places, depending on the circumstances."

I personally am guilty of speeding (going over the limit in my cage..) :Police:, but I try not to, simply as I wanna keep my license, having lost it once, in Oz, for drink driving :shit:. And I always look out for bikers, as I will expect the same respect when I own a bike - I will personally guarantee a dent in the drivers door if they feel the need to ignore my presence, hehehe

Speeding is doing 61 in a 50 zone because pedestrians, namely kids, are used to judging a vehicles speed at around 50-55 and when they make the decision to cross the road based on the distance away from them you are they expect you to be doing said speed... go faster and you're going to be on top of them quicker than they expected and you're going to be screaming "Some fucken kids jumped out infront of me!"... and it's going to suck.

Nah. Speeding is doing 61 in a 50 zone purely because that's what the police ticketing tolerance is, and you know you'll get a ticket at 61. Bears very little resemblance to a safe speed in that area.

Are you serious? When was the last time you walked anywhere let alone crossed a 50km road... now pretend you're 5-10 years old so divide your ablility to judge speed by atleast a bajillion... are you folded in half the wrong way in the gutter by any chance? In towns (or whatever you call residential zones in cities) there is no excuse for speeding. There are myriad reasons not to speed, on the open road however I fail to see any for not speeding on a bike other than endangering one's own life. Serisouly though... If there's one place I wholeheartedly condone patrolling of it's 50km zones. Especially outside schools during intake/outake times (which in most cases are 30km zones). If you speed in town, you're a fucken kid hater.

I'm not suggesting it's ok to speed in town.
What I was trying to point out is that there are some areas in town where 51 is already too fast. To define "speeding" as 61 doesn't take the environment into account.
As an example I used to live in a very narrow street where cars would park on both sides of the road and little kids would play on the footpaths. Anyone doing 50 in that street was speeding in my opinion, because if a kid ran out in front of them there would be no way they could avoid hitting them.
On the other hand there are streets around here that have two lanes in each direction with very wide verges on each side, exclellent visibility and no residential housing at all. I would consider 65 to be a safe speed on some of those stretches and the only thing stopping me "speeding" is the potential ticket.

I was in all honesty a little scared to wave... not only because it was my first time riding the bike, but because I was afraid of the possibility of being rejected by the cows on the side of the road. Cows can't wave back, and that put me in a awkard position, the consequences of which I wasn't prepared to risk, alot like waving to HD riders. It's a toughy man, it really is.

There is no speed restrictions on a race track (apart from in the pits). The fastest rider wins. So speeding consideration does not fit in here.
A note to the ones who are very saefty consious and do not tolerate speeding anywhere for any reason: This thread is in no way promoting speeding. Nowhere am I condoning it or telling riders to speed. I am merely asking what the opinion is re riding faster than the speed limit.

Big problem here is are you talking exceeding the speed limit, or speed inappropriate to the conditions? You need to define the word "speed".
I never ride at a speed inappropriate to the conditions.
I don't exceed the speed limit in 50km/hr areas. It's a sensible limit there.
I may at times exceed the speed limit in an open road or motorway area. It's a calculated risk based on MY assessment of the speed appropriate to the conditions.
But if I get pinged for it I'll take it on the chin.

I pretty much don't speed on the motorway at all because of the relatively heavy policing. Pretty much every morning on the way to work I see at least one pulled over on the side of the southern motorway.

While what you say is correct, there has been no indication in the thread of what is considered 'speed'?
I said earlier that 110 is over the legal limit so effectively 110 is speeding.
Those that have needlessly voted so far possibly have done so thinking that speeding (in their own mind) is what?? quicker that 100?
More than likely, those that ride bikes (sept those that have to walk or be driven) ride quicker than 100 where possible, and yes gosh darn it, even on the Motorway. The poll is flawed.

If you can find one going fast enough and heading in the direction you want to go.
I find that in many places where the limit is 50kph there are often none of the hazards that the speed limit is set because of. i.e. Children - yes, if children are walking along the footpath and some are trying to cross the road than 40kph may be a sensible maximum speed. But if due to the time of day there are no children or any other pedestrians around then it may be safe to exceed 60kph on the same road. The speed limit doesn't vary (except for some school zones) and is set conservatively for the most dangerous time of day - at other times you can safely (but not legally) speed.
If I just ride at a speed I feel comfortable and safe at - I often risk a very large fine and a lot of demerit points. I have to be careful and travel at a speed that is safe AND wont get me in too much trouble with the law.
Of course at 3:10pm going past a primary school I am not going to be blasting along at high speed. Common sense should always be used so you don't unduly endanger the lives of others.

True, that. Although, if one's aim is to go out and speed, then it hardly matters which direction, does it?
Actually, I was talking about on the open road. Anyone that does stupid stuff in built-up areas is asking for, and deserves, a shitstorm of trouble.

Perhaps you might like to change your habits and answer a searching question for a change. Given that over the years of being on this site I notice you have a habit of avoiding.
So tell me this. If 'speed' kills, why is it that so few riders get dead on the track?
From the old-banger bike like mine, capable of 250Ks all-out, through to the real spinners which can get to 310/330, we don't see many deaths, compared to track-hours.
So how does the 'speed-kills' story fit with that?

Define speeding...
Definition 1: Exceeding the speedlimit. => Anywhere and anytime you don't endanger anyone else to a significant degree.
Definition 2: Exceeding the maximum speed that can be considered marginally reasonable considering time, place and all other significant risk factors. => Not cool.

OK, why ask me anything about why 'speed kills'? - have I said that somewhere 'over the years of being on this site'?? - (I've frequently said a sudden stop will kill you though).
In a nutshell, no, I don't want to change 'those habits' thank you all the same.

speed doesnt kill, crashing at speed does.
Though I wouldnt argue using a track as an example as it is a controlled enviroment where there is no oncoming traffic, pot holes, gravel, diesel etc.
At the end of day going fast doesnt matter as long as you do it to the conditions.

according to police, it's more dangerous to speed than it is to cause a crash. I've known people to cause crashes, obviously dangerous, get no ticket. cops will ignore your statement if they didn't attend the crash, they won't want to pull their laser guns in long enough to write a ticket for actually causing a crash or nearly... crashing is safe. speeding is dangerous.
and they wonder why cops get bashed, cop cars get set alight and speed cameras get vandalised.

Cops have landed two headline making drivers in a week both doing 180kph plus in cars WITH PASSENGERS. I make no sainthood claims about speeding on the bike but the 'with passengers' bit riles me.
Still seems a bit harsh to throw them in the slammer for speeding when no actual crash happened, no one hurt, no property damaged. Compare that to the teen charged with murdering that bloke in a Auckland motel who was released home on bail, only to run off this week. Now if he had 'sped' off from home then the entire Police force would have been searching for him, ticket book at the ready. Forget about the murder charge Bob, rumour is he was seen driving 61kph in a 50 zone the evil bastard.

Why are you riled? You ride a Z1000 so presumably go over 180km/h now and again. On two wheels. Right time, right place (like the uninhabited West Coast on most days), what is wrong with 180 on four wheels, other than it being against the law?
I see one of the guys nicked was from the UK. I never considered it speeding over there until I was doing 100mph, so really he was only 20km/h over. But it is stick a foreign driver on the front page month so what more can you expect............

It's the speeding with passengers who have no control over the vehicle that annoys me, be it in a car or bike. With passengers you do have an obligation to not put them in danger. Blasting down an empty road you are only endangering yourself. I would never speed on a bike if I had a pillion. Man the few times I've been on the back seat it has scared the hell out of me being so dependent on the rider to keep me alive. If he speeds I can't stop it. It's not like you can just step off the bike or step out of a car if the driver/rider is going too fast and refuses to slow down.

Why?
"Judge Tony Adeane accepted there were no other motorists on the road at the time."
"It was fortunate that it ended with the rider spending the day in court rather than in hospital, or even worse, by being another statistic." said the Police.
Seems like this road at that particular time was an ok place to speed, apart from the hidden cop doing speed enforcement obviously.

When passing a triple trailer road train. If one of them is doing 90 to 95 km/hr then you need to twist it up to 120 or more so that you're not out there on the other side of the road for an hour and a half as you creep slowly passed them.
Two hundred or so km inland here in QLD, the unofficial speed limit slides up to 125. Heard of a guy that was pulled over for doing 140 a bit out the back, the cop told him to stay within the "local" limit of 125.

Well lucky me I hit the magic 100 points today! I was just about to exit pearoa on sh2, about 100 meters from the 100k sign so I started to accelerate and bam, got pinged just in front of the 100k sign for doing 73in a 50. Question is has anybody ever had any success contesting a speeding fine? Is it even worth it or shall I just grab my ankles and accept my suspension.

People who have had a good reason have contested speeding tickets and won. Sadly you don't seem to have a good excuse.
The Police will normally overlook a slightly excessive speed just inside the restricted area if the vehicle is slowing down. As has been mentioned preiously by our resident experts there is no allowance for speeding up prematurely as you leave a restricted area,
Best grab yer ankles. Might pay to start saving for a radar detector?
