Not very funny - it may be clever but posting a thread with claims it leads to someone dealing in stolen property could see your sorry arse being dragged into court.

Try using your dark powers for good instead of this kind of crap.

Haha, very clever. Just make sure you log out otherwise others viewing the page might decide to edit your details while "you" are still logged in.

Don't know if that's possible, but given that the gullible (yes, me included) fall for it I think it could be problematic if a prankster tried editing your info while "logged in" to your open page.....

Surely we wouldn't have any delinquents (or perhaps, malicious folk) like that on here would we?

PrincessBandit
22nd August 2009, 18:35
Sorry to do this to you Jizah, because I do believe it was a clever catch, however...

My concern is that when I clicked the link and followed the instruction to "log in" I trustingly did so. I was startled to see what was brought up and in my concern I logged out of Kb and back in using my husband's account. I went to your thread and clicked again, to check whether everyone else was able to see what I was seeing i.e. my trade me profile. Sure enough it came up and I freaked even more, especially given that access to editing my details was there.

Finally it dawned on me to click the "log out" button, which closed the page and hence meant that no one else could "hack" my details.

If I was able to work it out then I guess it's not that difficult, but it only would take someone with a little less thinking to perhaps leave their details page open and have some less-than-helpful person take advantage of that.

Again, I apologise for something you think is clever, and probably is, but if it leaves people open to having their personal data abused then I think you should reassess what you post here.

Regards,
Dawn

You were probably still logged into TM when you went through KB the second time - I don't think anyone else could have got into your account that way

(I'm happy for a computer-type person to correct this though)

No-one else will be logged into your TM account by clicking that link. Each person will be taken into their own account (except of course for those who don't have one).

Retrospectively it is funny, but as a not-very-computer-literate person it did freak me out. The stupid thing is, I was sucked in because I logged out of Kb and then back in again under hubby's kb user name and MY trade me profile page was still open. It didn't occur to me that it might have occurred simply because of the computer I was on - all I saw in my panic was that someone else (i.e. "Balu") was able to view my personal data. Of course my first thought was that anyone else could.

Just one of those occasions where computer ignorance meant that I was probably sucked in worse than anyone else who would've seen through it.

Found this a bit confusing for a start, I never use my TradeMe account etc and got a bit of a fright thinking some prick had been using it to post scams!

After nervously reading the rest of the posts on the thread, the penny began to drop that someone was holding up a mirror and I was logging on to my own account!

On the one hand I can see the joke but on the other hand, my computer ignorance left me a bit insecure and my subconscious kept cocking my left hook!

Would the OP think it funny if he was within reach and copped a smack in the mouth for his trouble?

Practical jokers often demonstrate that they can't take it when their practical jokes go sour on them.

Dear Friend,

I am Mr.Emory Barr, Accounts Manager, of Abbey National PLC
Bromley Rd Branch. I have an important business proposition for you.

On December 12th, 2001, a German contractor with the British Pertroleum co-orporation, United Kingdom ,Mr. Olaf Partetzke made a numbered time (Fixed) Deposit for twelve calendar months, valued at US$ 17,350,000.00 (Seventeen Million Three Hundred Hundred and fifty Thousand Dollars only) in my branch.
Upon maturity,I sent a routine notification to his forwarding address but got no reply. After a month, we sent a reminder and finally we discovered from his contract employers, the British Pertroleum co-orporation that Mr.Olaf Partetzke died from an Automobile accident further investigation,
I found out that he died without making a WILL,and all attempts to trace his next of kin was fruitless.

I therefore made further investigation and discovered that Mr. Olaf Partetzke did not declare any kin or relations in
all his official documents, including his Bank Deposit paperwork in my Bank. This sum of US$ 17,350,000.00 is still sitting in my Bank and the interest is being rolled over with the principal sum at the end of each year. No one will ever come forward to claim it. According to inheritance Laws of the United Kingdom, at the expiration of 5 (five) years, the money will revert to the ownership of the Local Government Authorities here in Wales, United Kingdom, if nobody applies to claim the fund.

Consequently, my proposal is that I will like you to stand in as the next of kin to Mr. Olaf Partetzke
so that the fruits of this old man's labor will not get into the hands of some corrupt government officials. This is simple, I will like you to provide immediately your full names and address so that the attorney will prepare the necessary documents and affidavits that will put you in place as the next of kin. We shall employ the services of an attorney for drafting and notarization of the WILL and to obtain the necessary documents and letter of probate/administration in your favor for the transfer. The money will be paid into your account for us to share in the ratio of 60% for me and 35% for you and 5% for Expenses Incurred in the course of the transaction .

There is no risk at all as all the paperwork for this transaction will be done by the attorney and with my position as the Manager with my bank will guarantees the successful execution of this transaction. If you are interested, please reply immediately to my private email
box : emory400@xasamail.com

Upon your response, I shall then provide you with more details and relevant documents that will help you understand the transaction. You should observe utmost confidentiality, and rest assured that this transaction would be most profitable for both of us because I shall require your assistance to invest my share in your country.

Awaiting your urgent reply.

Thanks and regards.

The thing I am worried about is HOW this was done. Yes, it's 'clever', like many internet jokes, but am I the only one here who worries that if he can make us link to our TM pages, he can access or link to other accounts we have permanently logged on on our computers? I realise the internet is not 'safe' from anyone, but like many others here, I clicked on the link expecting to see details of some trader who was dealing in dodgy stuff. When it linked to MY page, I immediately thought I'd been targeted in some petty little KB tit-for-tat game for something I'd said or done recently, which is why I reacted the way I did.

I DO have a sense of humour but it doesn't extend to crap like this. Nor does it extend to private messages and flame warrior nominations from people who I thought were old enough and mature enough to not behave like this.

A few years ago KB went through a nasty and petty stage and I stepped back from posting. Looks like it may be time to do so again.

I don't believe it had been explained that well - not all of us are computer geeks who understand how links can be created like this. I still think it's a stupid thing to do, as the original poster was effectively 'publishing' the defamatory information by creating the ability to form these links from your computer so if someone wanted to pursue it, they'd have a good chance of going after him.

If you can't see that, then I think YOU'RE the one who's too fucking stupid for the internet. Oh, I see you are 20, that makes you the authority on everything, yeah, right.

Beemer, it's harmless. I'm not a pooter geek, but all it is is a generic link to take you to YOUR profile, generated by cookies on YOUR pooter. It's like this thread, if I jump outta kb and run the address in my pooter, it will pop up as me being logged in to kb...if you do it on yours it will pop up as you being logged in, even though we used the same addy...
It is quite clever, but completely harmless as it will only go to the page applicable to the computer being used to do it.

Perhaps you young 'uns who are having such a huge laugh at our expense feel it's your moment of "revenge of the nerds".

Take a bit of a step back and put yourself in our position if you can. With the huge amount of internet fraud, scams, malicious computerware such as spyware, viruses, worms etc. can you really blame those of us who don't have your 'puter expertise for, at least momentarily, flipping out?

If you had been laughing at our bike skills or "old fashioned values" or whatever, we can live with that. But for something as sensitive as personal data intrusion (yes, yes I know it actually wasn't, but it was a pretty close imitation) that does leave people feeling very vulnerable.

Just putting my 10c in (it's gone up from the 2c of my first post here).

Much better for people to be spending their time playing intelligent pranks, rather than doing skids and baiting cops in their boyracer cars in Hamiltron.

And you'd be laughed out of court if you tried to push a defamation case. In order to be "defamed" you need to be able to prove that you have suffered a loss of respect or dignity in the eyes of others as a result of what the defamer has said/written. Of course, as the only person that could see your own TM homepage in indeed yourself, then nobody else has thought any the less of you.

Until you put your foot in your mouth on KB and start threatening to "take it international". :violin:

As yes, congratulations, you have figured out that I am twenty. Still, that puts me one higher than you on the IQ scale as even at a youthful 20 years of age, I'm still not thick enough to live in Horowhenua.

That said, I am still thick enough to live in Auckland. Ah well, 'tis a upgrade from the old Moscow home.

Jesus christ, it seems that when ever you are around these gullibillies, if you can right click>copy>paste, you are a computer geek enacting a "revenge of the nerds"

can you really blame those of us who don't have your 'puter expertise for, at least momentarily, flipping out?

No one cares about being tricked by it, it's just really funny that beemer has had it explained to her/him and how it works, but because beemer has already committed to "taking it international" or what ever, she/he can't seem to get over it

Take a bit of a step back and put yourself in our position if you can.
Look your sounding old now....put yourself in their shoes....they just think it's funny and harmless and don't get why everyone's so upset.
It is harmless and you'll never get through to them young whippersnappers anyhoo.....

Much better for people to be spending their time playing intelligent pranks, rather than doing skids and baiting cops in their boyracer cars in Hamiltron.

blah blah blah

As yes, congratulations, you have figured out that I am twenty. Still, that puts me one higher than you on the IQ scale as even at a youthful 20 years of age, I'm still not thick enough to live in Horowhenua.

That said, I am still thick enough to live in Auckland. Ah well, 'tis a upgrade from the old Moscow home.

At least you were clever enough to poke fun at yourself for living in Auckland before anyone else did!

Okay - maybe I overreacted, but like I said, I had no idea how it was done and I WAS the first one to find his thread and click on the link. As explained, on here it's easy to piss someone off (hell, I did it once for daring to say I didn't like babies, go figure) and get flamed, red repped, abusive PMs, etc so take a step back and look at it from our perspective. Yes, I am older than 20 (and I am rapt about that, trust me), but sometimes what you young 'uns think is funny doesn't quite tickle our funny bones.

If the original poster had jumped in and said "ha ha, fooled you, this is how it works" I think several of us would have left it at that. I got a hell of a fright when I clicked on the link and it went to my TM page as I do currently have a bike for sale and this post made me think someone had mistakenly thought I was a thief. I immediately thought "great, I know what this is in retaliation for" (and am pleased that is not the case) and wanted it stopped before anyone posted what I thought was available for everyone to see, somewhere else. That's what got me so pissed off.

And the Horowhenua doesn't seem to exist except on a map - mostly we get lumped in with Manawatu - and don't chuck off at them as there are quite a few who would willingly thump you!

Look your sounding old now....

:shit: let me check. Damn! I am old! When you get to my age you forget stuff like what was I saying again? Oh, I think it was going to be "you forget stuff like how old you are". No, I mean yes, uh, hang on. Sigh. I need coffee.

p.s you will have to wait for your bling, i've given out too much in the last 24 hours.

Hey look I found out how to get into your account for real. After reading this thread I really wanted to know if it was actually possible. I found out this way by reading the html code of the website and it appears there is a loophole.

http://tinyurl.com/urhackeds

So seriously guys maybe we do need to be more careful.

I have hacked into you know who's account just as an example, but I will take it down later.

The whole thing has been a lesson to me to lighten up, and trust the mods. What should have sorted it for me straightaway was the knowledge that if it had been for real, the moderators would've dealt with it (and to the perpetrator) swiftly.

Forgive my lack of faith. All hail Mods!

See post 27.

Well, have you noticed how boring KB has become lately, or is it just me getting old?

I used to enjoy the way young ones on here rip into one another!

They get some really witty, clever and funny stuff going.

I enjoy it, keeps me up to date and feeling alive!

I learn stuff off them all the time, let them loose I say!

The whole world is getting hog tied with too many stupid, oppressive, rules! :brick:

You're lucky you didn't get a thump as well. Are you a 12 year-old computer geek by any chance? Or just one of those people who like to stir shit and get a few bites?

Not very funny - it may be clever but posting a thread with claims it leads to someone dealing in stolen property could see your sorry arse being dragged into court.

Try using your dark powers for good instead of this kind of crap.
