HI all

on my first decent ridout on my recently acquired zx10r, there seems to be a recurring whistling sound coming from the fuel tank when the engine is off. it lasts around 3-5 seconds, doesnt get louder, is constant. it sounds like air escaping from somewhere in the fuel system?

does anyone know what this is please?

thank you

It could be your filler cap seal.

Put your ear over it to see if you can identify where it is coming from.

All ZX10's and ZX14's do it. Breather is too small hence the 'whistle'

I'm pretty sure it's normal. It is on the new Ninja250 anyway. It's part of the fuel gauge system.

Is air going out of the fuel tank due to heat from motor build up / fuel expanding... same as when you park it in the sun.

... same as when you park it in the sun.

...especially when low on gas

And Z1000's. Seems most Kwakas whistle the same tune. Mine gradually did it less as it got older. Very rarely these days.

Every Kwaka I've ever had does it. It's character.

That's why the other brands don't do it - no character...

i get the same thing coming from a cyclinder with my BMW sometimes, depends where the cyclinders and valves stop when i switch it off.

Mine sounds like a tune from 'Paul McCartney and Wings'.

If you press on the fuel cap lid, you'll hear it change tune, or stop... easy to tell where its coming from ya see?

Kawasaki's come with a kitten from factory.

Add the ZZR1100, ZX7 and GPz900R to that list. If it annoys me too much I pop the fuel cap to relieve the pressure.

The REAL cause is, you're riding to slow, and the bike is so bored it whistle's to pass the time away.

Search for the Kawasaki Meow... they all do it  (well all the best ones)

Every Kwaka I've ever had does it. It's character.I like that as a concept... "Kawasaki, proving that character doesn't have to mean an uncomfortable shit heap with dubious reliability and gheyarse oil leaks, since ages ago".

Noticed that my FZR 1000 does it too,

Just to ruin the whole kwaka thing....

It not a fault, it's not warranty it just what kawasakis do to vent the fuel tank. Have 5 in the shed they all do it, especially if left out in the sun, or if you are moving the bike, it will do it then cause you have disturbed the air in the tank It's all good. if it bothers you just open up the lid, it's no biggy.
