with a top speed of 327mph it works out as great fun-per-gallon. Not to mention that it's fairly maneuverable and good at shooting down Germans.

The mighty Hurricane!!! WooT WooT! What a plane. The beast that won the battle of Britain. Everyone seems to think it was the Spitfire, but noooo, twasn't :oi-grr:

The mighty Hurricane could land, refuel & rearm in 9 mins where the Spitty took almost 3 times as long.

I notice that we have a FW-190 in the country!

One of the Flug Werke built reproductions. In fact, the first 190 to fly since WW2!

I look forward to seeing that in the air.

Anyone else see last night's news item on the resurgence of the airshow, in the USA?
A big increase in crowd attendance due to "the recession".

Of course with the classic nature of that plane, it is expected to fetch $5m+ and with that sort of coin one could buy an oldish MIG or maybe even a Tom Cat...Muchas fun!

Yeh I know... 52hrs since overhaul! My dad's mate is one of the chief engineers at Pioneer Aviation that do the restorations on P-40 War/Kitty/Tomahawks at Ardmore. Hoping to arrange a visit there at some point to check the place out.

Also my freinds father has a 0hrs airframe DeHavilland Vampire - the fuselage hasn't even had final assembly done yet! They also have a very low hrs complete aircraft with full history and all log books from the factory which has been stripped down and is being prepped for re-assembly onto the 'new' fuselage. His father is a jet turbine specialist and is rebuilding the engine after a full tear down. It's got a lead weight in the front to replace the guns and ammo that would normaly weigh the nose down. Can't wait to see that thing in the air!

I believe they expect that hurricane to fetch between 4 and 5 million at auction.
A short story..........
Long time family friends, who discovered in their twenties that their father was an ex Battle of Britain pilot, (DFC and at one time flying the total serviceable air force of Malta) lived in Wanaka. When that Hurricane arrived following restoration, their Dad took his old log book and went out for a looksee. That aircraft was recovered from the Russian tundra but it turned out that it was one he had flown as an instructor in a training squadron during his war service.
There was a photo of him in the cockpit on the front page of the Southland Times.
What are the odds??

Knew an old Polish guy on the shore who flew Hurricanes, after he escaped from Poland, through France. He wouldn't give you tuppence for a Spitfire but looooved the Hurri - managed to get himself shot down 3 times and not a scratch!
Shame Tims Hurri is for sale - hope it stays in NZ.

I notice that we have a FW-190 in the country! Yes, and the gentleman concerned has also bought the Mk14 Spit that Tim Wallace almost killed himself in, so that'll be back in the air in NZ when the rebuild is finished.
A bit like that Sea Fury they have at Ardmore. Built 1940. Still brand new. Built rather later than that..try 1945 'ish
Also my freinds father has a 0hrs airframe DeHavilland VampireHey Gavin - don't know the serial no do you? - is it ex RNZAF? single seater? - would be good to get one of the Vampires back in the air.
A P40 would be nice - sort of the US equivalent of the Hurricane......http://www.trade-a-plane.com/clsfdspecs/813582 or a nice Yak 3 - only $475,000 http://www.trade-a-plane.com/clsfdspecs/830310

Heh, I'm Gareth. The Vampire is ex-swiss I believe. It's just going to be flat silver (like they nearly all were) with blank roundels - but the project is probably 5-10years away so he might change his mind by then!

The Hurricane is 1940
Advertised - Airframe Total Time:52 Hours
Have they left off SMO?

The Sea Fury at Ardmore has a spectacularly low number of hours it has flown, from new.
They were built 1947 to 1954

I saw it when I went to see a Venom that a friend had painted.
The guy that flew it that day was having a great time.
I remember a high speed fly-by, upside down, with not a lot of air between the tails and the runway.
A lot of wonderful acrobatics.
