Where do you aim when taking a shot at a big game animal? im a deerstalker, have aimed at the shoulder all my life, the theory is that I break its shoulder immobilising it, chances are it'll go through and destroy the lungs too.
Recently I've hit and lost a fallow deer and a pig, followed a trail of blood and bone but trail has gone dry. Talked to some other hunters and one of them aims at the neck, while others aim for the head. I hunt with a .308

I'm no hunter (yet) , but wouldn't the base of the neck (where it's thickest) be best? No huge muscle and bone mass like the shoulders, but it would either likely hit a major artery (bleed out in minutes and die) , cut it's wind pipe (suffocating it) or clipping its spine/neck?

Thats brilliant for an end on shot. and the heart sits at the bottom of the chest in the brisket where you describe. I just find that every shot is different. I've had cases where iv hit the shoulder, its gone through and absoultely dismantled the lungs and heart then broken the shoulder on the other side, which resulted in the sika deer falling vertically onto its belly, as if it sat down. Other times I hit em 2 or 3 times in what i thought would be fatal area

I always went for a neck shot, and used a .270

Meat hunted in the Kawekas for years back in the 70's .243 .223 always head or neck shot as the meat was what you needed to sell not just a heap of splintered bones...More money for head and neck so just became a habit I suppose...
Anything shot up the arse was taken out as the small caliber's do not do a lot of damage..
Big guns pull them down so if you don't want to carry out to much usable meat just shoot them anywhere...

Just behind the shoulder as the bullet will do both lungs and poss heart and go straight thru with very little loss of useable meat. But hey, if you are close enough to do a head shot!
