hello,
just started riding and am new to everything motorcycle- got me a yamaha suv250 to play on... and now it's bike bike bike. i switched to the motorcycle to escape the 60 buck fill up in the hilux (which drives 350kms). i'm stoked. you can tootle all over town for $8.

i did the classic thing of buying the bike before i could ride it- but now me street legal on my learners.

so who else commutes to the CBD on the north western motorway??
I'm getting my education on there... 1st time i did rush hour, i hadn't realised how slow it goes- keeping the bike upright was a total mission. got it sussed now.

anyway- just some green rantings. who else is learning and where do you ride for fun? I'm hoping my little bike can get as far as the coromandel...

Welcome to the site. Don't underestimate 250s they may not look like much but they can handle a good ride just like the rest of them. (just can't go as fast) Should be able to get out to the coromandal easy. Sure some of the aucklanders on here will be able to give ya some better roads around your area. Good luck and happy riding.

Heya

The ride out to Maraetai is a good one to start with. Not too long but some good corners here and there.

Have fun - and take care on that Northwestern.

arhmmm.... least they can take corners covered in metal while overtaking LMAO. (j/k)

Welcome to the site, ah the northwestern - when ever I have to travel on it, I run a constant speed of 140 and pray no coppers are around.

But keep safe and ride like you stole it!

Get out on the open roads and have fun thats what it's all about. :mobile:
The 250 will eat it up no sweat. :2thumbsup
There used to be a guy in the Ulysess who was 80 years old and traveled all over on a GN250 and a LS400.
And not at the same time. put that in for the smart arses on here. :Punk:

Give us a bell if you down this way always keen for a riding buddy. :drinknsin

I agree with Death & Taxes (did I say that) on the ride to Mareitai being a good starter. Nice corners (a few potholes) basically wide road with a speed limit to suit the learner and a beach at the other end.

Enjoy your riding, I'm coming up 2 years and still lovin it...

Quite a few of us. I commute Te Atatu -> Northcote every weekday.

Don't worry about the traffic; you'll soon find the Tao of Filtering, and gain Enlightenment.

Welcome to the site....and riding....

Riding in peak traffic is fun.... you will soon learn the art of lane splitting.... and you will get real good at it.
Get out on the roads as often as possible..
head up to Helensville a few times...
or go up past Albany to Wellsford.....
Just fill your bike up and ride...

Have a look at the "Events and Meetings" section and come along to any of the rides...
If they say "Fast" rides.... they mean FAST...
so look out for the ones that say "Slow to medium" rides....
There are always slow riders out there... me included.... and they always will wait for the slower riders to catch up.

have fun and enjoy riding....
Take care out there on the roads. :2thumbsup

I'm one of the daily commuter types on the Nor western carpark.
I might already have buzzed past ya on my trusty ol XJ900.
As for rides --Therres been a few newbee rides just lately out along old north road up to wellsford.
The pace was relaxed for everyone and we stopped at all intersections so noone got lost.
Don't sweat the 250 bit.A freind of mine travelled all round new zealand with me on her 250 and jazbug from wellytown regularly rides up here on hers.

favorite near-by spot is rimmer's road when it's on. i have a 4x4 for other car so i can have it ALL to meself. otherwise piha/kare kare or maori bay. I prefer coromandel the rest of the time if the east coast is on- HOW WAS THAT SWELL a few weeks back- my gaad the whole coast was perfection. I scored the best waves I've had on the east coast in 4 years- and got some tasty video footage too.

I'm trying to sus it so i leave a spare board at my folks place on coromandel peninsula so I can use the bike to get there (instead of costing myself 50 bucks) and still surf... If you're asking i take it you also surf?- where you like to head??

Sounds like you got it made! Yea, I do love it but I am not really a surfer. My mate lent me his 7 foot mini-mal for last summer (2004) so I did go out there and gave it a go. We usually go to Piha, mainly cause that's my mate's fav P.S. the roads going there are pretty fun too!

The best fun I had was Jan of last year when I was with me mates and we surfed every single day for a week in Whangamata. Waves weren't big or anything but were real nice with very clean breaks. I even had go on a short board but then the nose went under and I went arse up. Ended up breaking the board and having a bruised chin!

te he he- and- te he... I was teaching surfing down in whanga this summer, but i missed your bust-up! snapping someone elses board is a truely unforgivable sin. you'll snap less boards if you get out of the shallow water- unless you spectacularly nailed your board falling from the top of the wave onto it out the back. either way that's classic! surfing takes a long time- but it's the best sport there is...

i think we're all going to collide in west auckland...weather permitting on sat- i know that excited feeling about a new bike- i couldn't be held to get my bike once i'd seen it there was no going back- no number of horror stories about bike wrecks and paraplegics from my doctor brother did a thing... i also haven't stopped talking about biking since i started riding mine. it's actually quite good to have somewhere to go to vent it (this website) cause eveyone i know is pretty much bigoted against bikes. :) see you sat if we all make it that far...

Least you're good at one of them.

My surfing ability is right up there with my riding skills.

Only took it up this year, though, so I'll keep using that excuse. Loving the long boards. Although the shorts are fun too (and being a skinny geek I find them easier to get waves on).

How do you carry your board on your bike?

I've been on a couple of surfing holidays, including one round the Northland (excellent trip - highly recommend it) but I'm just too heavy to stand up on anything shorter than 9'. Although when I say stand up I mean wobble a bit then fall off.

You remind me of a friend in England who insisted you couldn't fire an arrow from a bow because there was no chemical energy converted. We pointed out that there was chemical energy used in the muscles that pulled the bow but he said that was converted to potential energy and so didn't count.

Yep, it's almost as bad as breaking someone else's bike, trust me... errrr moving right along. I took the board off him and got it fixed straight away even though he said don't worry, so the situation was fixed.

yeah- well you see I got a bike 'cause i snapped one day last month in gridlock traffic. I bought a bike then did my handling cert & learners the next week. So I've been shocked at how fun they are to ride- and am starting to understand that bikes might...grrr...might be as almost good as surfing. racing one all tipped over on the bends does look pretty cool...mmm candy sweet g-forces. Might work up to a li'll tootle on the track if they ever do a racing for dummies day;)

Give yourself a bit of time on your bike. When you upgrade to your next beast, you'll be ready to do a track day. Not dissing your ride or anything cause it's got that cool retro look and must ride pretty sweet but you might find that you'll want something with a wee bit more grunt than it, for the race track. Once you've done that, you'll gain even more skills from track riding to use on the road or where ever. After that, if you think it's your thing, you can do more track days and become a non-racer track expert or even start racing.

Though, I'll tell you one thing. Surfing is one of the most fun sport out there, that doesn't demand a lot of financial input from you. Bikes in the other hand? Well that's a whole different matter... (It doesn't have to be but if you wana go latest and greatest, the amount of money you'll end up spending is CRAZY!)

I'm going to spend a fair bit of time with me srvvvvvv me thinks cause it takes so long to get to be allowed anything else- but even tho me bike is loverly for its 250cc size- I'd definitely like a bike that has more power just for the open road never mind the race track...I'm patient... will look at lots of other people's bikes along the way as when you are new to the whole thing you can't amke sense of all the diferent types of bike. I started with a preference for cruisers and have swung completely the other way with current favourites being the buell style meanie bikes. Yes- surfing is one of those cheap as sports- in that way its very inclusive 'cause nearly anyone can scrape 300 together for a board and away they go... I take it racing bikes is more for the sport and rush of it than winning money to keep the bank balance out of the red?

Actually I'm not short on experience. I used to ride a bike in England years ago, but the last time I was on it I flipped over someone's bonnet and screwed up my pelvis. My problem at the moment is every time I see a potential hazard (cars, gravel, turns, etc) my brain goes PHUCK YOU'RE GONNA DIE! The more time I spend in the saddle the less twitchy I get.

But yes, I need to start riding the bike every day. :ride:
